Commanders to OFFICIALLY retire #28

There might be a lot of NFL players that if we knew we wouldn’t be huge fans of … look at Aaron Rodgers… and maybe some we are critical of that we’d really like.

Anyway, I don’t want to derail the conversation which is about the player

Some day I will share the experience of my after-game encounter with Ed Brinkman, the great glove/no bat shortstop of the then Washington Senators outside of the players entrance at DC Stadium when I was 7-8 years old.

Anything D. Green might have done would have paled in comparison. That said, I will celebrate his accomplishments since he never stole a freight train.

You never know. Back in that year we had the really bad back to back snowstorms in DC, a neighbor of mine got stuck in her SUV on North Glebe Road in VA.

She was about a mile plus away from a service station and store heading into Ballston. A number of people passed her by and she was getting ready to leave the vehicle and walk.

A dark SUV pulled off in front of her and put its flashers on.

The guy helped her dig the SUV out and flagged down another guy to help push it back on the road.

That guy, whom she didn't recognize at the time as she's not a sports fan, was Alex Ovechkin.

I think Darrell had a very 'strict' line in his mind where he would be outgoing and approachable vs standoffish and disinterested.

I have had interactions with him on both sides of the spectrum.

1. My Uncle used to put together a tailgate that people would 'buy' their way into. Costs would go toward expenses of food / raffle prizes, and anything beyond those type of costs would be donated to the Darrell Green Youth Life foundation. I vividly remember being allowed to the player parking lot after a game where we presented Darrell with the oversized check you would see in lottery adds with our donation. Darrell was very welcoming and warm. Talked to us, had fun.
2. My mom used to work for Inova. They brought Darrell to a 'signing' event at Fair Oaks mall. My mom was able to get me an 'in' where i sat with him at the table for a few minutes while he was signing autographs for people who had come to meet him. I was younger (<10 year old) and he couldn't have been cooler (or at least i felt that way). Talked to me for a few minutes and seemed very welcoming.

Fast forward years later, i'm working the counter at an auto parts store in the area. In walks Darrell Green along with his mechanic. I simply say something along the lines of "Hello Mr Green, i'm a big fan." He wasn't douchey or anything, but he could not be any less interested. He kind of half assed acknowledged it and went about his business with absolutely zero engagement.

I think he is similar to a WWE wrestler. When the time is right, he has a persona. He has an ability to represent a brand as a professional athlete. When he's off the clock though, he doesn't put on a face. He's got a finite line between when he's being a professional football player, and when he wants to be a person.

Just my own interactions. I have zero exposure to how he treats media, or media types, or anything else.

Scrubbing the Redskins logo off the helmet on some of the DG merchandise is just crazy to me. Don't understand why they keep denying their own history.

I wonder about a licensing freeze and if they can’t produce merchandise with any logo that is not the ‘official’ logo of the team.

Murals and videos are one thing, but sellable items… I don’t know. Just playing devils advocate here

I suspect that's it Derek. Look - the team has already shown that where it can use the logo in terms of historical accuracy, it will. In this case, I suspect the NFL isn't allowing it. It sucks, but the NFL seems to be drawing a line at merchandise.

Finally got to watch the video

Green was my introduction to the Redskins. I essentially grew up in the ‘90s. He was a great player in the 80’s and ‘91, and one of the few players in the 90’s that was from those teams, and still good for the redskins. Even when the team was bad (and it was after ‘91…) he was always good.

First time I ever recall a bad thing being said about him was when he was complaining in the press about shottenheimer’s training camps.

So just say that. Openly and publicly. Then the issue is done and dusted.
