Commanders to OFFICIALLY retire #28

I just thought it was weird that the NFL didn't have it on the front page but ESPN, FOX SPORTS and others had it as the number 1 story

so should there be no numbers retired if they played for the Redskins?

no, I am just reading in that the NFL tends to stay away from the name 'Redskins' as if it is a disease.

whenever you see Gibbs brought up it is always 'Washington coach Joe Gibbs', etc.

I don't think the NFL has quite figured out how to bridge the two eras.

My view is they should use 'Redskins' for all history up till the name change and 'Commanders' thereafter.

The 1982 Super Bowl XVII winning team was not 'Commanders'. Nor was it the 'Washington Football Team'.

It’s a small thing, but it seems like this was done with forethought, and with good reason. Not a Synder-era “How do we keep the fans watching one more week” move.

That was a great moment.

You mean Snyder wasn't interested in team history because the club gave Leonard Stephens #49 while Bobby Mitchell was in the building? or gave out Joe Theismann's #7 because Dwayne Haskins needed the number to market his new active wear clothing line 'QB-7'?

Tell me it ain't so.

Hopefully the porta potties are cleaned and ready to go!

I'm probably the only fan who feels this way - but I don't really care much about Darrell Green. I recognize the on-the-field contributions and the game-changer he could be and he had a great career. I just don't think he's a very nice human and that makes him a hard guy for me to root for, even as a lifelong Redskins fan.

He's one of the greatest players I've ever seen at his size and longevity

I absolutely agree with the sentiment of him as a person.

Top 3 Redskins moments of my life
Same.
It's right up there with sitting in the end zone for the NFC Championship game at RFK when we smoked the Lions along with "70 Chip" and that 3rd quarter in SB XXII....

Yeah, definitely the highlight of the Redskins years since the 91 Super Bowl. I don’t think anything else compares since that Super Bowl. My hands hurt so much clapping for Monk. My head hurt during both speeches from the tears. I was in tears during the Cal Ripken HOF speech the year before as well. too. I think it was all the memories since all 3 of these guys played during my childhood through my early adult years. Realizing the passage of time, knowing it will never be the same, all that jazz. But definitely an amazing night and I’m so glad I was able to be there. It sounds like most everyone on this board was there, which it was definitely burgundy and gold all throughout the crowd.

Unless a guy does something illegal or unethical off the field I prefer to focus on his career achievements.

I don't live next door to any of these athletes or belong to the same clubs they do so I have no way of knowing whether Darrell Green is a 'good guy' and in what sense or context that term is used, etc.

If Green doesn't like to sign autographs but donates $$$$ to charitable causes around DC and helps at-risk kids, does that make him a bad guy for fans or the community?

Too much to think about in my career and at home to worry about how area athletes measure up as the guy next door.

You don’t care. Some do :)

There are actually members here who experienced it - I believe ntotoro and SkinsOrlando just to name a couple had bad experiences just to name a couple. I don’t think there’s any excuse for being rude to fans, on whom your entire career and livelihood are dependent.

Doesn’t mean he wasn’t an incredible player. But I do think what kind of person a player is matters to a lot of fans. Hell, I’ve seen Sonny treat fans badly and he laughed about it. It is what it is.

This weekend will be about celebrating the athlete as it should be.
