Commanders not meeting expectations

Sort of an interest of mine- do we move on from Payne when it becomes cost effective?

Who replaces Payne? It ain't Mathis. And Newton, while showing flashes, isn't the automatic (despite what may fans think) heir, at least in my view, though I love his potential and loved the draft pick of him. We are an up and coming team and our big weakness is defense. I don't get cutting one of your better D players without a plan to replace him with another better player. And that better player is going to cost- either picks or big money. Payne is our best DL, in my view and is capable as a starter in 2025. We need help at so many other positions. DT is down on the list, IMO.

The 2025 NFL Draft is deep at DT. We should be able to find a decent one on Day 3.

I hear you. The only caveat is, we should be able to find one that all the 'experts' believe is good but may or may not be. We should always be careful about undervaluing good players we already know about (because they've played at the NFL level) and college kids who haven't done anything yet.

Exhibit A: Chase Young (and I use him as my example because not only was he touted by damned near every NFL talent expert as a good one, but as a generational talent). Not so much.

I have to look at more on Payne now that I have NFL Com. I have viewed stuff that says he is highly underperforming but if he is playing anywhere close to his value, obviously, he should not be replaced. Read stuff that says he was double teamed a lot which might not be surprising. You all who have had the wonderful opportunity to view him each week views are of great interest to me.

Agreed. AP did a great job with the players he added via FA and the draft and we can only hope he continues to nail it again in 2025 and beyond. I have to wonder if Newton tried to hide his feet issues concerning the surgeries he had on both of them and how it will impact his playing time and performance. AP knows we have issues at DT too. He can find gems in the later part of the draft and here's to hoping he finds them in the future.

He looked real good against Tennessee. I will keep looking.

I hear that as a strength and conditioning exercise, Harris has chained each player to a National Guard jet and told them to start pulling. Because he's not a monster, he let them know they can rest when they move the entire fleet to Maryland.

The coaching staff should be putting the players through fully padded two-a-days this week to improve their strength and conditioning.

Time off is for closers.
Not sure if serious or not, but union rules prohibit practice during a bye. Players are automatically off from Tuesday until the following Monday.

It just seems to be a bugaboo for this organization that we can't find a solution at DT no matter who is doing the picking and how high in the draft or how much money we throw at them.

I really did come into the season expecting to see Newton make an impact as an inside rusher. I was not as confident at 295 he could hold up as an immediate three down player for us, especially against the run, but he has been all but invisible to date.

Inside the red zone I saw the club used Sheldon Ray inside on a third down conversion play and was wondering why Newton wasn't in there.

Just me, if I am the GM I am looking in the offseason for some reasonably priced solutions at DT to stop the run and give some push.

We need to spend the money on the outside to get high quality edge rusher(s) that offenses have to scheme for.

I had the feeling all along that Payne's performance two years ago, being such an outlier versus his prior production, was not going to be duplicated after the contract.

But I did expect him to be an above average player for us and he has largely failed to reach that lower bar.

Forbes couldn't get regular playing time in a backfield that before the Lattimore trade had ONE NFL corner on the roster in Sainristil, who was playing out of position.

We were lucky that the Rams claimed him off waivers and we were able to get his salary off the books.

Forbes was the worst of the Ron era first round draft choices. Indeed the 2023 draft was one of the worst in the league last year.

Chase Young had 7.5 sacks in 2020. Dotson came in and had 5-6 touchdowns before falling off the map. Davis started a number of games at LB over the 2 years, etc.

Forbes not only busted out as a first round pick, he doesn't look like an NFL football player in any regard.
