Payne's contract only carries a $5.6M dead cap charge if traded post-6/1. He's eminently tradeable

And then an $11.2 cap hit in 2026.

That’s $16m of cost over 2 years. For a player who’s somewhere around good. Then you have to replace him.

Unless you can get a day 2 pick for him, there’s no value in it.

that's the point... we can't shed the guarantees since we've already paid them out. If we trade him, then the way they are paid likely changes, but it still hits our number.

I guess I am totally missing something then. I thought that when we trade a player, that team he is traded to takes on all of the salary of that player No?

For example, all the monies from the rest of Payne's contract. See below. We do have out in 2026.

In this instance, the $28 Million signing bonus (check recieved at signing), can be spread out equally across the 4 years of the contract, plus a void year, so that the cap hit is only $5.6 Million per year. Since the team they are getting traded TO did not pay out that money, then they are not responsible for the cap hit. If you look at the whole contract below you see that signing bonus. Due to the 'voidable' year, after year 4 the $5.6M 'billed' to the 5th year of the deal will revert back and hit the cap, creating a dead cap number of $11.2M.

Thanks for the HH article, ST. My bad. Looks like Payne will on team through 2026. He'll probably have a monster year in 2026 just in time for his next contract which won't be with Washington.

I don’t think that’s really good value. If you’re going to have to eat that amount of cap space, might as well have him around. He isn’t bad. In fact, he’s good.

He’s definitely going to be overpaid. But it’s better value to keep him and play him and get something for the money rather than nothing of value and then having to pay to replace him.

And I’m not a huge fan of his, I just think you can’t be emotional about getting rid of a guy for no reason. Practically speaking, paying him for production for one more year is better value than paying him to go away.
