He would and would deserve to be, but I'm sure he's also heard the buzz that he is likely to be a cap casualty unless he renegotiates. I don't know if it's true, but clearly our tackles are only amazing on paper. The center of our run defense has been terrible for pretty much Payne and Allen's entire tenure. We used to blame that on terrible linebacking, but with Wagner and Luvu here... the spotlight falls back on the D line.
 
Yeah they need to replace Payne and Allen IMO. I guess it'll cost money to dump Payne but what if they traded him? He's just not making a difference positively but he costs a ton of money.
 
In that scenario Jon Allen’s feelings would settle at around #8 on my list of concerns:

1. What’s for dinner?
2. What time does White Lotus debut?
3. Paper or plastic?
4. Hey Web MD- I have a slight cough. Is it cancer?
5. What’s the chance of rain tomorrow?
6. Does my dog really like me or is it the snacks?
7. What is the meaning of love?
8. Jon Allen’s feelings on being traded.

I don’t think JAs value is very high. Something like a 4th at most to a playoff type team, maybe more like a 5th. If that’s all it took I’d do that deal in a heartbeat. I won’t pretend to know the browns cap situation other than them tying a lot of money up in Watson, but I’d guess they won’t want players in return unless it’s like a young up and coming player on a rookie deal.

Payne has an almost untradable and uncutable contract.

He’s going to be here one more year. I think we just need to accept that because he’s not so bad that you need to pay him to go away.
 
I remember when we had four first round picks on the D-Line. I’d trade all four of them in their prime (plus Tress Way) for Phily’s front four.

In an AP world, yes. In other GM (or lack of GM) worlds, anything could happen (and has happened).

But yes, in an AP world, I think this is true. The only thing I will say is, I have thought many contracts across many different sports were like that. Then another GM, for some inexplicable reason, jumped. I think some of that may be when they do some analysis (draft, or other), they make some conclusions that don't get updated with reliable/sharp data afterwards.
 
I don't know if i'm ready to close the book on Allen or Payne. They've been the focal point of every offensive game plan since we drafted them. They've never had any real 'force' on the outside to let them be able to actually do anything. I'll freely admit i'm not hyper focused on them on every play, so they may just be coming up short...

I will also point out that Allen came back from a torn pec, so i would imagine bull rushing was ruled out, so he was semi-limited in his ability to be explosive in the middle. He wasn't exactly lights out at the beginning of the season, but to be fair NOBODY was. It wasn't til well after Allen went out that the defense 'started' clicking in some areas. Chinn, Luvu, Wagner, Sainiristil, all were playing markedly better in week 15 than they were in week 5. It was like the whole defense was off a few 'ticks' early and some guys started to wrap their heads around it.
 
With regards to athletes after 30, Khalil Mack just had the best year of his career(2023) at age 32. It’s not a universal truism that all athletes fall off right at 30 or before. But, it is common.

I’d say it’s significantly worse with speed athletes. Cornerback, for instance.

The injury to Allen is a big deal. I know he came back, but he actually tore his pectoral muscle and required surgery. Laron Landry had a similar injury and unfortunately, even after surgical repair, they tend to reoccur much like achille's injuries do. Most pectoral injuries happen in game because it is one of the primary muscles involved in tackling and blocking. In regards to how big a part of Washington's future plans he is, the pec injury is a huge factor.

Trade both of them for whatever we can get. AP had no qualms about outright cutting like 2-3 prior 1st round picks so trading these dudes shouldn't be a problem. The ONLY issue is the potential cap hit. I hope that the geniuses within the FO can eliminate that hurdle.
 
If you think Jack Sawyer is going to be on the board at 29, forget Garrett and draft him. If you think he's gone by then, trade for Myles. My $0.02

I don’t think either is tradable for anything.

Allen has no guaranteed money left on his deal and a 20+ million dollar cap hit. Everybody knows he’s likely going to be released.

Payne carries a huge cap hit if he’s released or traded. And he’s not a bad player, and he’s very durable. So paying $20m on the cap to make him go away is kidof silly.

They’re going to most likely have to release Allen and just keep Payne. If they really like Allen then maybe they extend/rework his deal to lower the cap hit and push money to the future. But I’m not sure they want to pay him a lot of new money.

I just think folks need to just accept trading either is most likely not going to happen. And Payne is most likely going to be here. Allen probably won’t.

I heard somebody “report” maybe they could throw Allen in as part of a Miles Garret trade. I find that highly unlikely and Allen would be pissed.

Payne's contract only carries a $5.6M dead cap charge if traded post-6/1. He's eminently tradeable

But he's still going to cost the team trading for him over 20M a year for average at best play.

Too bad nobody hired Ron Rivera to run their front office.
 
I remember when they all used to rank the 91 Redskins like 15th to 20th best SB team every year and we said no way, they should be one of the top 3.

Here's the team that DVOA says is the greatest of all time. Washington led the NFL in points scored and was second in points allowed. It lost by a field goal to the Cowboys after an 11-0 start, then sat its starters in the second half of the final week and lost to the Eagles by two points. That was it for losses.

For the 1991 season, Washington was second in offensive DVOA behind San Francisco, third on defense behind Philadelphia and New Orleans and first on special teams. But what's more impressive is where Washington ranks in DVOA out of 1,309 teams going all the way back to 1981. It's the only team to rank in the top 50 for all three phases. (Specifically, Washington is 50th in offense, 36th in defense and 19th in special teams.)

Washington won games during the regular season by scores like 45-0 (Detroit), 34-0 (Phoenix) and 23-0 (Philadelphia). It beat the Falcons 56-17 and the Rams 27-6. Then came the playoffs. A rematch with the No. 8 Falcons ended with a score of 24-7. The Lions made it to the NFC championship despite ranking only 13th in DVOA, only to be pummeled by Washington, 41-10.
