Last game of the year for us.
Truthfully, it's the first game of the season for us😅

I’ll post this here as to not detract from the goal countdown thread. Carolina fans are salty. They have such an inferiority complex. As much as I want to see him get a hat trick and 4 goals, the fans here don’t deserve to see history. They don’t know hockey and don’t appreciate history.

Interesting, I see you live in NC so it's particularly interesting to hear your take.

A lot of hockey "fans" are kind of programmed by some of the stupid talking heads who have said inane things like Ovechkin is a "one-trick pony" and trying to emphasize whatever ENGs he gets, on top of being a bit jealous or just not bright enough to see what is obviously playing out in front of their eyes.

This is true sports history, no matter how you slice it, and any even-minded true hockey fan would appreciate what Ovie has managed especially at his age. It's really a marvel. I didn't catch tonight's game but from what I read about it... yikes. Sounds like it was pretty bad. They are starting to enter into that Penguins zone for dislike at this point. The Flyers are to the Penguins what the Hurricanes are to the Capitals, a bit; overly physical, jerky, and seem to manage to get our number too many times.

Really hoping the team is also just coasting and finding their footing with new lineups (Leonard!) right now, too - so for now, I am still not too concerned.

Also, this was a brutal back-to-back for the Caps.

Tonight’s game, the hurricanes dominated from the start. They had all the chances early and it led to a 3-0 lead. It was 4-0 when Ovechkin scored late in the second period. I guess you could say the Caps could build off of that and come back, but the Canes were firmly in control of the game. So it was odd being there and hearing the fans boo. They even booed over the goal announcement, which to the announcers credit mentioned his 892nd career goal. But the fans were booing, so most couldn’t hear it. You would think this is the best case scenario for them. They dominate the game and get to see some history that has very little meaning on the game. But they still weren’t happy to see it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve noticed this with their fans. When Brind’amour took over, the team developed this chip on their shoulder. They have this us against the world mentality. You even had Don Cherry doing his shtick calling them a bunch of jerks. As a team, playing with that chip is great and if it gives you more of an edge against your opponent, you take it and run with it. But the fans seem to have adopted that attitude and then have directed it at the opposing fans as much as the players. And yes, I’ve seen Redskins fans acting this same way at Fed Ex field, so I’m not going to pretend this is unique or doesn’t happen with teams I root for. But it’s a different dynamic than any I’ve seen.

A few examples. My dad and brother came down and we went to a playoff game back in 2019. People behind us would randomly yell during the game “I hate Caps fans”. There were plenty around and I don’t think it was directed at one person. But it was odd to hear them direct it at visiting fans instead of the players on the ice. And this happened probably 10 different random times throughout the game. Then at the outdoor game a couple of years ago, two guys in front of us wanted to fight some Caps fans a few rows behind us. That stuff happens and I always have a whatever attitude. But our row was in between them and my 11 yr old niece was in the middle of these. Then the two canes fans are yelling about how big their dick is and yelling it at the woman that were with the guys they were acting like they wanted to fight. My sister tells them to knock it off as there is a kid sitting right there. One of the guys says, she has legs, she can walk right out of here. The cops eventually came and Tony eh guys out, but they came back later anyway. Thankfully tonight was more tame, but there were a lot of dumb comments not worth repeating about the Caps players and fans. You can yell at the players all you want even if it is dumb, but their vitriol was directed as much at the fans as well.

One of these incidents, you can write it off as dumb fans filled with alcohol. They are everywhere at every stadium. But now it’s a pattern I see every time I’m there. I guess they want to be more like NY or Philly and make things hostile for everyone.

Wow, way worse than I thought. A friend of mine who travels a lot was recently telling me the country is all adopting the classic Philly really stupid (to me) style of being a fan.

This truly sounds that way. Pretty disappointing to hear. I hoped he was wrong. I have heard multiple times Dallas has goos visitor treatment.

I agree with you, up 4-0, historic goal - but watching the replay I hear a lot of loud cheers first. To me, sour Car fans then boo because they are annoyed so many fans cheered a “Caps moment” at their stadium. Yes stupid considering the situation overall though.

I heard a replay as well and it sounded louder on the replay than in the arena. Maybe me yelling and clapping made it sound different to my ears. It was the Caps fans cheering and yes there were that many of us there. I thought the boos were initially a reaction to the penalty that led to the goal, but it kept going and going like it was ann effort to drown out the cheers. But they even booed the goal announcement. So for many of them, they made it clear they didn’t like the moment. My wife is not a big sports fan but she likes going to hockey games. Her comment to my family was that the fans definitely didn’t appreciate Ovechkin. She knew we were there to see history and she has seen the reaction on TV from fans in other buildings when he scores. Her experience definitely did not match what she was expecting.

Honestly, this feels like a small example of a bigger problem. We have seen rudeness and bad sportsmanship on the rise for years. Look at how awfully people behave at airports. in movie theaters, and elsewhere. I will defend booing. It is a part of the game. It's a part of the game. It belongs. I have booed my own team when I expected better and booed the opposing team as a way to cheer on our team, but there are also lines. You don't cheer when an opposing player gets hurt. You acknowledge a great play especially when it involves one of those records no one thought would be ever broken. Anyway, people need to read that book about Kindergarten and start acting as maturely as a five year old.

I agree with most of that. We have seen rudeness and aggressiveness on the rise in other areas of life for sure. But I think sporting events now are much safer and not as rowdy as they were 30 and 40 years ago. Brawls in the stands were the norm. Sure we see them all now because of social media, but it less often and was more brutal at sporting events for the fans. I agree booing and cheering against the other team is perfectly acceptable. It’s your right as a fan and even last night I just sat and watched. But it’s still crazy to see fans not appreciate history when they are seeing it. The Hurricanes players did. Their post game comments were appreciative of the goal because they knew that it was historic but also didn’t stop them from winning. But the fans, most did not appreciate it at all.

I have not seen the postgame. I have read and seen some reviews of the game though, some people saying it was a bit dirty by the Hurricanes. I don't know - they have a very aggressive, very physical style of hockey that the Caps used to play more in the past but have loosened (especially under Carbery). I think it may help them but it really depends so much on officiating. It always seemed the Caps v Pens, the refs would not allow overly physical play. Other teams, maybe. I feel like the Caps don't get those beneficial whistles, in particular against the Canes, which is why they have become such a hard draw now.

I am really curious about these postgame Canes comments now! Most players certainly appreciate it; I mean, they KNOW how hard it is to score. Fans watching, especially simplistically, it's all too often binary. US vs THEM, or ME vs HIM/HER. There is no other window they view anything anymore (at least some).

I watched a few of the plays from last nights game. You all are correct. You could not hear the booing on TV. I was sitting pretty low and surrounded by a lot of season ticket holders. So our ears could hear it. But the collective cheering definitely carried on TV. So I’m glad the hockey world at large didn’t have to hear it.

Man imagine being Chicago, where a dude you're playing is 3 goals away from something and the NHL Commissioner believes in your team so little he shows up just in case that dude shoves a hat trick down your throat.

Are the Caps too focused on getting Ovi the record? Is that the reason for their slump?

Crazy!

Great 8 is tied for number 1.

Where is everyone after we witnessed history?

In a way I wish this thing went on a bit longer so we could enjoy the drama, get the entire sports world focused even more as we were focused on Mark McGwire. Seems his heater ended this quickly. But so happy to get at least the tieing goal at home with Joe B and Locker there to call it. They deserved that.

It was the longest that we've watched a Caps post-game since the Stanley Cup. We knew he could do it, but it's still surreal...

Not that I wish for him not to score against the NYI…but I hope that the next goal comes at home against Carolina.
