Burner's Burning Questions: The Mock Drafts, 2014 (Continual Updates)

everyone has there reasons behind who or what position we take at #34...but I have been looking at some stats and at 3-13 last year we were tied for the second most points given up Minnesota 480..Washington and Bears 478......this is another reason I say Defense should get the pick at #34..... just saying if there is not OL stud available that could come in and start... maybe we start to get this "D" repaired .....

i guess i need to stop beating Defense at the #34 pick ....beating it to death i am...I DONE...

Shoot...you're fine. We're Redskins...beating drums are part of our history. :)

All I'm saying is...if we have a good OT drop into our laps at 34...we have to take him. The worst thing this team could do is to pass an OT that's rated higher than the defensive guy just so we can say we addressed the D.

Pound away... :)

get that OT if he's there......at 34......i am not picky. . just like Ward or Dixon . . . may the force be with you
Yeah..... Hail to the Redskins...coming home tomorrow bye bye JAPAN.. been nice. . but i got CAROLINA in my Mind

I love Big Jake but he was an UDFA find almost 30 yrs ago. If everybody could go out and find, imo, a HOFer OT off the scrap heap, everyone would be doing it.

Bargain basement shopping and gleaning the stubble off of the straw fields at night are what got us a TyPo at RT now.

If you're at #34 and the OT is rated higher than your S or LB, you take the OT.

So let it be written...........

ha!

we're where we're at because the talent selection/eval was bad over the years. it didn't matter where we selected or who we signed. if you're going to generalize then let's accept what I have just introduced.

the thing I find amusing is that...despite all the postings/poll findings about BPA...the emphasis on RT at #34 is clearly driven by perceived need.

again....I'm happy either way. when I put on my analytic hat and assess where greatest risk falls...IMO it is clearly on the defensive side of the ball. I don't see an integrated set of talents. there are still way too many uncertainties. if this got down to actually quantitatively assessing greatest "operational risk"....there's no doubt in my mind that the focus would largely center on the defense. a RT doesn't defend 6'5" receivers.....4.3 speedsters, tackle in the box, track shady mcoy crossing the middle, intelligently manage space in two deep coverage, coordinate defensive adjustments, get to the QB in under 4 secs, stop the run at the point of attack....etc...etc.....just about everything this defense sucked at last season.

the offense has been stocked with lots of talent. that is not the case on defense. aside from risk...greatest gain, IMO given the present roster and past performance, comes from stocking better/best talent on defense.

and i thought i was crazy or alone ... glad someone else finding the need to pick 34 on defense...but i not knocking those who feel the need to draft OL at 34 ...feelin better about my feeling for the team.....thought i was just OLD SCHOOL

it's not old school! that's the kicker! we now (or should) have an offense that can be a scoring machine in this pass happy league - with a quality runner to boot. the difference maker, in this context, is defense! Denver sure learned that last season and made amends this off-season.

if we draft OL at #34 - we'll benefit. it puts a lot of the money on the offensive side which will create hard choices downstream and clearly communicates the strategic direction for the upcoming season. out of my department on that last one!

Defense has been significantly addressed via free agency with Hatcher, Jordan, Hayward, Sharpton, Porter, Geathers, and the re-signing of Rak and Meriwether. Offensive weapons were also addressed in free agency with the acquisitions of Jackson and Roberts.

The interior OL was somewhat addressed in free agency, but RT is still a glaring issue (perceived by almost everyone). Because of this, I would be shocked to see anything other than RT at 34. Not to say all the other needs are filled, but they have been addressed at least.

Burner’s Burning Questions – The Mock Drafts, 2014 (Continual Updates)

The BBQ mocks continue as we get a closer look at the prospects. The frequency of mocks will increase as we get closer to the draft and it will be a daily feature in the final week. Feel free to add your own ideas and mocks as we go along.

Team needs are OL, DL, MLB, CB, and FS. Some of these issues could be settled (somewhat) in free agency, but we will address those potential signings in future mocks. Each week, there will be mocks with and without trades. The format is a bit different than what we have seen in the past. In each round, other candidates for selection are featured.

Round Two: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Moses is the latest Virginia product to continue a tradition of quality tackle prospects from President Jefferson’s university. He is a talented player who should fit in at the right tackle position.

Other Possibilities:
Dion Bailey, S, USC
Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana

Round Three: Keith McGill, CB, Utah
The Redskins have met with McGill and they are impressed with his size, speed, and ball hawking skills. He had an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl and continued to showcase his talent at the combine.

Other Possibilities:
Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State

Round Four: Brent Urban, DE, Virginia
The Redskins return to Virginia and pluck an impressive 3-4 defensive end to bolster the line. Urban has enormous upside and would fit into the rotation quickly and could be a starter by mid season.

Other Possibilities:
Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee
Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
Kenny Ladler, S, Vanderbilt
Taylor Hart, DE, Oregon

Round Five: Cyril Richardson, G, Baylor
The Redskins are surprised to see Richardson falling to the fifth round and realize that he provides good value at this juncture. He is a big guard who can pull effectively and provide superb pass protection. Robert Griffin, III puts a good word in for his former teammate.

Other Possibilities:
Jeoffrey Pagan, DE/DT, Alabama
James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech
Jordan Zumwalt, ILB/OLB, UCLA

Round Six: Jordan Najvar, TE, Baylor
He rarely got targeted by the Bears as they typically don’t feature tight ends in the pass happy offense. When Najvar was targeted, he produced and put up good numbers. An excellent blocker and superior special teamer is hard to pass up in the sixth round.

Other Possibilities:
Jay Prosch, FB, Auburn
Tyler Larsen, C, Utah State
DeAndre Coleman, DE/DT, California
Charles Leno, Jr., OT, Boise State

Round Seven: Shaquil Barrett, OLB, Colorado State
Barrett is a highly underrated player who simply makes good defensive plays. Check out these stats: The Mountain West defensive player of the year had twenty tackles for a loss, three blocked kicks, twelve sacks, seventy-four tackles, and was a special teams ace.

Other Possibilities:
Jordan Najvar, TE, Baylor
Dontae Johnson, FS, N.C. State
Tim Flanders, RB, Sam Houston State
Glenn Carson, ILB, Penn State

UDFAs:
Shaquille Richardson, CB, Arizona
Keith Price, QB, Washington
Zack Kerr, DT, Delaware
Andrew Rodriguez, OG, Nebraska
Ricky Havili-Heimuli, DE/DT, Oregon
Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
Steele Divitto, ILB, Boston College
Jerome Smith, RB, Syracuse
Chris Whaley, DE, Texas
Zac Kerin, C, Toledo
Jonathan Dowling, FS, Western Kentucky
Beau Allen, DT, Wisconsin
Alfred Blue, RB, LSU
Matt Hall, OT, Belhaven

Once again, feel free to add your own mocks, ideas, and suggestions.

Hail BB!

Nice list. Like the call w/Price as a UDFA. They say he's undersized (6-1/202) - he's not that undersized, Kirk (6-3/209) & RGIII (6-2/217). UW is a pro-style offense; that helps. They can always ask RGIII what he thinks - he got a good look at him from the sidelines in the 2011 Alamo Bowl. Granted Baylor won (67-56) but Price (23/37; 438 yds; 4TDs) vs RGIII (24/33; 295 yds; 1TD) did put up nice numbers. Kieth had his up's downs out here but he'd be a decent fit, a good guy on the PS. Not saying draft him but they do need a QB on the squad.

BB, I noticed you don't have a punter or kicker in your UDFA list. What are the odds we bring in a young punter?

Looks like we have 2 new punters and 1 new kicker. Forbath is still on the team.

I spent quite a bit of time defending Shanahan or redirecting blame away from him, but one thing I could never figure out is why he was so attached to Forbath - a guy we knew didn't have a strong enough leg to even try an important kick from any distance - or Rocca - a guy that was blatantly done playing football.

Cobra Kai hit a 50-yarder. He didn't have a huge leg, but was easy money from 45 and in. I guess I'd rather have the kicker I'm ultra confident in to nail the 36-yarder at the end of a drive, and an offense consistent enough to get him that close.

none of those defense signings are significant, IMO, except Hatcher and Rak. none of the others are difference makers.

it isn't either or. it's where the priorities fall in the early round. additionally...right now...all the big money has been invested in offense. we may very well invest in a RT at #34....and put off the defense for another year. as I look at it....there are NO stars on that defense. there are some good players other etams would covet (Kerrigan, Rak, Hatcher) with everyone else falling into placeholder, developing uncertainty (Amersen), aging (Hall), non-disctinctive (*weather), depth. Haslett may be able to work in more creative blitz schemes for some gains at the margin. but that defense...IMO.....is mid-tier at best....which places an even greater burden on the offense. the talent base on the defense is the core problem.

anywho....there are so many holes that in some respects it doesn't matter. per the ole cliche: defense wins championships. we'll get to a top tier defense. it's just gonna take a while.

That stud OG from UCLA,Xavier Su'a Filo, spent time at OG and OT.

Plays with a mean streak. Heard him on NFL Radio yesterday talking about that's the only way he knows how to play.

Hope he's there at 34...

Everything I'm reading lately leans to guard of FS.

I guess there's no OT projected good enough at 34 to become a starter?

Starting Polumbus another year is going to be a disaster.

Barring injury, I'm not convinced ANYONE we take at #34 will start. I'm thinking the idea will be to take a guy who can at least be a major contributor.

Where have you read anything that leans to G or FS? The latest I've seen and heard, especially from John Keim, points to somebody to rush the passer along with OL. Not that it makes the speculation any easier. The FO seems to have done a pretty good job of due diligence without tipping our hand as to what we might do with our 2nd rounder. While many scream O-Line, I just don't see it with our 2nd round pick unless we end up trading down.

The more I see of the two tackles from Tennessee, the more I like them and I think we can get one of them in the 3rd. Personally, my pick would be Kyle Fuller if he falls to #34 although he seems to be moving up into the first round in many mocks. Guys I've seen falling are C.J. Moseley, Dee Ford and Jason Verrett. You can probably add Bradley Roby to that list as well after his OVI charge. I'd take ANY of those guys over a RT with our 2nd round pick. I also think Allen wants to hedge his bet at the prospect of re-signing Rak next year, hence another guy that can put pressure on the QB and take some off of the secondary.

yeah but he couldn't kick off out of bounds and that matters.

and i almost felt like looking up the 50 yarder you reference because it just doesn't sound like a kick he could make, but i trust you ;)

i just hate the idea that we might be 53 yards out, down by 1 or 2, with time expiring, and our only option is to hail mary it because our kicker just doesn't have the leg he should.

I can't even believe we're talking about kickers. My opinion, but Forbath is the best kicker we've had in 10 years. He's 17-20 from 40 yards and out in his first 2 years. That's not bad at all. And before we go labeling him weak at long distances, he's had a whopping 3 opportunities in his NFL career from beyond 50 yards, and missed one of those 3. That's not a 'problem'. I believe his 94% of kicks made in 2012 was in the top 20 kicker performances NFL all-time. Again, that's pretty frigging good.

How much of the reason he's only had 3 attempts is because coaches wont send him out there to even try?

We'll see. I just wish he had an extra 5 yards worth of range... obviously the coaches aren't convinced, they've already brought in one other guy to compete for the spot.
