Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017(Continual Updates)
Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land.
Today we bring you the latest mock as we get closer to the draft of 2017 and it features two different trades – this is our only multiple trade mock for 2017. The roster will be full of new prospects before you know it.
As we get closer to the draft the frequency of mocks will increase. We are just over two weeks away. This week we are featuring three mocks and next week will bring four. During the week of the draft, we will have a mock each day. Along the way we will feature mocks that have trades. Too, we will not be featuring mocks that have a trade involving Kirk Cousins – only if and when that actually happens.
Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.
An extra note that we will continually post throughout the mocking process: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do. It’s not an easy task, but we’ll try to do our best.
Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2017.
Team Needs:
Free Safety
Defensive Line
Inside Linebacker
Left Guard
Running Back
Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down in round one to the very latter stages and pick up a second and fourth rounder.
Round One: Malik McDowell, DE, Michigan St.
The commitment to the defensive line this offseason is real and totally obvious. With a new defensive line coach, the Redskins are placing a new emphasis on the front seven. The All-Big Ten stud is a powerful force who is a major disruption for opposing quarterbacks and running backs alike. Although he could play inside for a few snaps each game, his greatest potential is likely at end. There are a couple of concerns about his work ethic, but those fears are somewhat overblown and he could shine with Jim Tomsula as his position coach. McDowell recently added fifteen pounds of muscle and his measurements are now 6-6, 295.
Other Possible Targets:
Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama
Malik McDowell, DE, Michigan St.
Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio St.
Haason Reddick, ILB/OLB, Temple
Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
Round Two: Budda Baker, FS, Washington
The first name just screams “Football Player”, but this Husky is a very talented free safety and possesses superior speed. The All-PAC-12 performer can cover large swaths of the football field and is tenacious in coverage. Plays with unending confidence. A bit of a liability in the running game, but his quickness makes up for that skillset. Can focus in on receivers and stay with them step for step. Baker needs to improve his tackling and should do so with good coaching. A natural free safety.
Other Possible Targets:
Justin Evans, FS/SS, Texas A&M
Kevin King, CB, Washington
Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma
Obi Melifonwu, SS, Connecticut
Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashland
Adoree Jackson, CB, Southern California
Chris Wormley, DE/DT, Michigan
Round Two: D'Onta Foreman, RB, Texas
The Redskins have been looking for a consistent running game in recent years. Alfred Morris departed after slowing down during his last year in a Redskins uniform. Matt Jones wasn’t the answer. Rob Kelley is a good running back, but only in a relief role. Chris Thompson is a passing down back. D'Onta Foreman from the BIG 12’s Longhorns could be the answer. This extra luxury pick in the second round allows the Redskins to reach a bit. He’s a big, powerful, bruising, and intimidating back who has a great reputation for picking up major chunks of yardage every time he touches the ball. Incredibly quick. A true goal line threat. Consistently breaks tackles. Very effective on screen passes. A team first player.
Round Three: Sidney Jones, CB, Washington
Let’s get rid of the bad news first. Sidney Jones had a serious leg injury at the Huskies pro day and he will likely miss the 2017 season. The good news? The Redskins can possibly grab the best corner (arguably, before injury) in this draft right here. So what can the Redskins expect from the All PAC 12 standout in 2018? Tough competitor. Rarely allows separation from receivers. Consistently shut downs his side of the field. Superior speed. Elite agility. Should be a shutdown corner for a decade or more. Moderate to low risk, but very high return.
Other Possible Targets:
Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson
Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
Anthony Walker, ILB, Northwestern
Cooper Kupp, WR, Eastern Washington
Nate Peterman, QB, Pittsburgh
Montravius Adams, DT/DE, Auburn
Round Four: Trade
The Redskins trade their early pick in this round and move to the very latter stages of round four. The team picks up fifth and sixth rounders along with a 2018 fifth round selection.
Round Four: Isaac Asiata, G, Utah
This very strong and powerfully built guard could be a target for the Redskins. Asiata has played tackle and center, but mostly out of necessity due to injuries along the Utes offensive line. The PAC 12 lineman has the prototypical size to play inside and left guard is his natural position. Excellent in the rushing offense, but will need some work in the pass protection schemes. This four year starter could crack the starting lineup by mid-season, maybe sooner.
Other Possible Targets:
Dalvin Tomlinson, DT/DE, Alabama
Vincent Taylor, DE, Oklahoma St.
Elijah Qualls, DT, Washington
Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
Brendan Langley, CB, Lamar
Trey Hendrickson, OLB/DE, Florida Atlantic
Round Four: Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M
With the trade that produced this fourth rounder, the Redskins use the flexibility to choose a wide receiver from the Aggies of the SEC. Steady, dependable, reliable. Not flashy, but can be a Pierre Garcon type of player who is able to provide steady production. Good route runner. Typically wins contested passes. Deceptively fast. Able to create separation much of the time. Not necessarily a red zone or home run threat, but can get you plenty of catches and yards in the open field.
Round Four: Ryan Glasgow, DE/DT, Michigan
The Redskins decide to snatch another defensive lineman in this round as the they waste little time in trying to improve the defensive line. The Big Ten defensive lineman adds to an overhaul. Glasgow, the younger brother of Detroit offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, is a relentless defender who can play tackle and end interchangeably. With a humble attitude, the Wolverine takes a simple blue collar approach to the game and does his job. Dominant in the run game and is an effective pass rusher.
Round Five: Jarron Jones, DE/DT, Notre Dame
Jones is a productive force at defensive tackle and end. He has superb athleticism for a man his size and figures to play more at the end, but could slide inside at times. Jones has the potential to dominate offensive linemen when he is in a groove and can live in the backfield. The ACC (Affiliated) standout uses his length to block passes and possesses a respectable pass rush. He can disappear at times during a game, but Jim Tomsula will likely provide good coaching and motivation.
Other Possible Targets:
Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
Charles Walker, DE/DT, Oklahoma
John Johnson, FS, Boston College
Taylor Moton, G/OT, Western Michigan
Eddie Vanderdoes, DT/DE, UCLA
Round Five: Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego St.
At 6-5 and 330 pounds, Nico Siragusa obviously has the size to play on the line and he also has the talent. The long term starter for the Aztecs is not related to that other Siragusa, but he could forge a solid career in the NFL. The MWC product is powerfully strong and helps to open big holes for running backs. Struggles a bit with pass protection and will likely need a year to learn and perfect those techniques – as such, he is very teachable and a good teammate.
Round Six: Josh Tupou, DT, Colorado
There are some humongous, towering, massive mountains in Colorado – Telluride, Pikes Peak, Mount Elbert, Crestone Peak, Josh Tupou. He’s big! He eats only one meal a day – it last about eight hours. Ok, enough of the lame one liners. Let’s get to the obvious – Very strong. Plays with a passion. Good at the point of attack. Handles double teams with ease. A major cog in the middle. Excels in the rushing defense. Provides a decent pass rush. Can play in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 defense. At 6-3 and 355, the PAC 12 standout can actually run a 5.3 forty. A true Buffalo indeed.
Other Possible Targets:
Delano Hill, SS/FS, Michigan
Jordan Morgan, G, Kutztown
Josh Augusta, DT, Missouri
Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan
C.J. Beathard, QB, Iowa
Richie Brown, OLB/ILB, Mississippi St.
Round Six: Jay Guillermo, G/C, Clemson
Jay Guillermo is versatile and can play either guard or center. That’s a good reason for the Redskins to take a flyer on him. Also, there is a need to have a backup at center. He would be drafted for depth purposes, but could actually be a starter within a year or two. The ACC lineman has the massive size that is favored in the NFL for inside positions on the offensive line. Good pass protector, but would need to work on the running game.
Round Six: Jordan Evans, ILB, Oklahoma
Jordan Hill was considered a fringe prospect before the 2016 season. In some ways he is still an obscure prospect, but the BIG 12 linebacker for the Sooners could be the best sleeper prospect of the 2017 draft. Good tackler. Superior athleticism. Hard-nosed player. Very physical. Excellent in pass defense. Very quick. Always knows where the football is located and gets there quickly. Shoots gaps with lightning speed. Good run defender. Probably needs to add about five to eight pounds of muscle. Excellent special teams prospect.
Round Seven: David Jones, FS, Richmond
David Jones is a really special athlete. He was selected the preseason defensive player in the CAA, but an early season injury derailed part of his senior season. He returned a few weeks later and was still able to capture second team All-American honors. Last summer, Jones was projected as a second or third rounder and considered to be one of the top five free safeties available in the 2017 draft. If the Redskins are looking for a major steal, Jones would fit that profile. Decent speed. A special teams standout. Goes 6-3, 215. Plays the middle of the field like a boss. Wins “jump” balls consistently. Excellent attitude. Diligent student of the game. Graduated early (December).
Other Possible Targets:
Pharaoh Brown, TE, Oregon
Ben Boulware, ILB, Clemson
Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina
James Quick, WR, Louisville
Ben Braden, G, Michigan
Hardy Nickerson, ILB, Illinois
Round Seven: Tyrique Jarrett, DT, Pittsburgh
The Redskins continue their commitment to stocking defensive linemen in 2017. Jarrett will need time to develop, but the All-ACC standout from Pitt would be a good addition late in the draft. Clogs up the middle very well. Would be solid in the running game, but does not bring much of a pass rush. Needs to develop a little more of a mean streak. . Good attitude and dedicated teammate. Could develop into a fine rotational player in the next year or two.
