Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2020

I hear you on that. With our history, ANY signing of players with recurrent injury issues is 'questionable' in our minds. I guess the other side of the argument could include:

1) He's still very young - 26 and is a former 2nd round pick who has played very well at times.
2) Only one of his injuries was serious (in terms of possibly impacting his long-term capabilities) - a torn ACL 2 seasons ago. He has had ankle and hip injuries and a concussion or two. But both IR decisions came late in the year.
3) Dunbar missed even more games than Darby.
4) We got him very cheap and it's only a 1 year deal. If his abilities have been diminished by injuries, we'll find that out, and we aren't stuck with him.
5) It's low risk, high reward. If he just had some bad luck with injuries and is healthy, and can remain so - might turn out to be a real steal.

I acknowledge those points may be on the rosy side :)

Yeah, I've heard those arguments for years as we break records for most players on IR in a single season.

And those arguments will give me room to pause, and give the Skins the benefit of the doubt...it just feels awfully familiar. He's not the only one of the 16 players we've signed with history of injury.

Key here?

We're not signing foolish contracts.

I agree. The reality is, if we really looked at it, nearly every NFL player on their 2nd or 3rd contract has an 'injury history'. How do you differentiate between 'injury history' and 'injury prone'? I have no freaking idea.

But you are exactly right (don't get used to it :)) - the difference here is that those type players are getting 'show me' contracts at reasonable $$. Allen would've inked a 4 year deal with Darby.

The one thing that makes me less against it is we have a completely new training staff. I would expect we’re still going to have injuries here and there but the new medical team ‘should’ keep more players off IR. Basically they’ll get the players back into service more quickly than the last staff.

Listen, I am not completely opposed to signing Darby, but when we have injury after injury this season, and he's one of them...don't wonder why this team has so many on IR.

This guy has ended the past 2 seasons on IR.

Sean Davis another guy we signed that's just coming off missing virtually an entire season.

Seems to me this is the result of Brandon not wanting to remain in DC. He’s just taking an adult approach with it unlike Trent & Dunbar. If so maybe we can get a 1st & 4th for him?

Possible Free Agent Targets
We are bringing back this feature for 2020 and BBQ has enlisted the help of several Redskins pundits as well as input from yours truly. We have three people who have contributed thus far – Ian Cummings of Riggo’s Rag, Nathan Britton of Riggo’s Rag, and Mark Tyler of Hogs Haven. Obviously, the Redskins simply can’t sign all of these players. This list is simply some players who could fill a need and possibly be available in March.

Damarious Randall, FS, Browns
Cordy Glenn, OT, Bengals
Jason Peters, OT, Eagles

Off-Season Updates
The Redskins cap room currently stands somewhere between $28M and $36M for 2020. Releases and re-structures (if they occur) could continue to increase the cap room considerably.

The Trent Williams saga is coming at us with all kinds of news and it is difficult to know what is true and untrue. Stay tuned.

We still know absolutely nothing about Alex Smith, but he wants to continue his playing career. Will he be ready for the 2020 season? Is his career over? Will he retire? Will he give the Redskins any cap relief? No one knows, but we’ll stay on top of it.

The injury to Reuben Foster is serious, but he is working out and running sprints. Optimism is high for a full return by training camp.

Bryce Love, Jordan Brailford, and Caleb Wilson are hoping to see action on the football field for the first time in their Redskins careers. Love could be in line for a lot of quality playing time. Brailford and Wilson have uphill climbs to make the final roster of fifty-three.

On the first page of this offseason thread and the second entry, we have the latest updates on coaching hires and football front office positions being filled. That entry will be updated as needed.

Look for a long term deal to be completed with Brandon Scherff before the 2020 regular season begins.

Personal Thoughts
Here are some players that must have a superb offseason if they hope to be on the roster this fall according to BBQ: CB Greg Stroman, FS/ST Troy Apke, OT Morgan Moses, TE Jeremy Sprinkle, CB Fabian Moreau, OT Geron Christian, WR Trey Quinn, and ILB Josh Harvey-Clemons.

With Ron Rivera as the coach, look for a more disciplined team and a locker room that has more accountability. It sounds like the “luxury resort” atmosphere is a thing of the past.

In Conclusion
The free agency updates will continue as new information is available.

BB the lack of OTA’s and off season is going to hurt a lot of chances, especially UDFA’s.

Worries me about chance of no preseason games.

We can't get ahead of ourselves here. Let's see what the next thirty days will bring. Kyle Smith is very good at what he does and I think we can trust the process. It has worked thus far in free agency.

Yesterday's free agency update has been edited to correct a few inaccuracies.

I like Burrows. The one caveat is that he only had that one year of superlative performance and you wonder if that is an outlier to some degree.

He has first/second round physical talent but top pick or top 3?

Many would not have said so 12 months ago.

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2020

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope your week is going well. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become part of the family. You are our honored guests, so sit back and enjoy.

Today we take our latest look at the college prospects list. The East-West Shrine game, Senior Bowl, and NFL Combine are in the history books. The college pro days, private workouts, and team visits did happen, but only in small numbers. Teams will now talk with prospects via virtual connections. It is assumed that the Redskins will visit with many players and the process of preparing a draft board is going to be intensive.

BBQ will cover it all (at least as much as we are able to do so) and post all relevant information here. If you come across any information, please post it in this offseason thread.

The draft will be here before you know it. The list below is a culmination of one team’s efforts to obtain the best players. We will present it to you periodically each week or as information becomes available.

In Conclusion
There is your latest prospects update for the 2020 offseason. BBQ will post updates as information becomes available.

The truth is that Dunbar and Scherff have both missed a lot of games the past couple of years.

Darby is the same age as Dunbar and has had injuries but has also reached heights in the NFL that Dunbar has not.

The Redskins potentially win here as we are not locked into paying Darby for the next 3-4 years before we get to see if he can stay healthy and be consistently productive.

Dunbar on the other hand was not going to quietly play out his contract and let his play speak for itself on the field. Unfortunately for him there isn’t enough history there of high level production to warrant a long term deal at this point.

I have read where he now may be willing to play on his contract in Seattle and let the chips fall.

So if that is true then it was more about getting out of town like Trent without having to come out and say that.
