Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2020

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'm wondering if this makes him the de facto GM?

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I can't imagine how conflicted @Burgundy Burner must be feeling right now about the CFBSC tonight.
He's a Mississippi guy, so he probably doesn't have much of a likin for LSU, and before that he was in Virginia Beach, so he probably don't take too fondly to Clemson, either.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'm from Virginia - born and raised. Educated there, including college. I'm ACC loyal and hope Clemson wins.

A certain Redskin had a reaction to that statement.

I know Young is there at 2 and you cant pass on him, but man Simmons is a beast. That dude is going to be a force at the next level.

Possible Free Agent Targets
We are bringing back this feature for 2020 and BBQ has enlisted the help of several Redskins pundits as well as input from yours truly. We have three people who have contributed thus far – Ian Cummings of Riggo's Rag, Nathan Britton of Riggo's Rag, and Mark Tyler of Hogs Haven. Obviously, the Redskins simply can't sign all of these players. This list is simply some players who could fill a need and possibly be available in March.

Off-Season Updates
The Redskins cap room currently stands somewhere between $46M and $47.5M for 2020. Releases and re-structures (if they occur) could increase the cap room considerably.

New coaches/new football front office personnel post has been updated on the first page of this offseason thread.

We still know absolutely nothing on Alex Smith, but he wants to continue his playing career. Will he be ready for the 2020 season? Is his career over? Will he retire? Will he give the Redskins any cap relief? No one knows, but we'll stay on top of it.

The Trent Williams stalemate will have a conclusion this offseason. Stay tuned.

Bryce Love, Jordan Brailford, Caleb Wilson, and Reuben Foster are hoping to see action on the football field for the first time in their Redskins careers. Look for Foster to have a significant impact. Love could be in line for a lot of quality playing time. Brailford and Wilson have uphill climbs to make the final roster of fifty-three.

On the first page of this offseason thread and the second entry, we have the latest updates on coaching hires and football front office positions being filled. That entry will be updated as needed.

Personal Thoughts
Here are some players that must have a superb offseason if they hope to be on the roster this fall according to BBQ: CB Greg Stroman, FS/ST Troy Apke, OT Morgan Moses, TE Jeremy Sprinkle, CB Fabian Moreau, OT Geron Christian, WR Trey Quinn, and ILB Josh Harvey-Clemons.

With Ron Rivera as the coach, look for a more disciplined team and a locker room that has more accountability. Rivera's first full day on the job wasn't overly eventful, but he did get rid of the ping pong table in the locker room at Redskins Park. It sounds like the “luxury resort” atmosphere is a thing of the past.

In Conclusion
The free agency updates will continue as new information is available. However, we are going to take a break from the free agency updates for about three weeks unless there is some earth shaking news that we must cover. The mocks will continue.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

We need a legit TE badly.

TEs feature prominently in good offenses these days.

Philly won the SB at least in part due to Ertz's clutch catches.

Gronk led NE to SB wins.

The Chiefs have Kelce, the 49ers have Kittle and the Packers have Graham.

Good TE play here would lead to a much higher conversion rate on third downs.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

A lot of the players that have been interviewed at the East-West game so far have mostly been UDFA types. Tight ends are rarely on practice squads and they are generally not UDFA types anyway. Look for TE news to pick up in the near future.

Are we more inclined to go after a young FA? There will be a couple of good ones available in FA, between Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, and Eric Ebron.

BUT a couple other names that might be interesting...Tyler Eifert finally was able to get back into a full season after battling injuries the previous couple of years. He played in all 16 games and was average w/ 43 catches and 4TD's, but that was with a terrible team. could a full season away from injury help bring back his dominance?

Jacob Hollister is another interesting name, but I doubt Seattle will let him get out the door.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Yea, it's safe to say we probably had the 32nd ranked TE's last year...a position that's crucial in today's league.
A stud there would bring us a giant leap in the right direction for our offense.
Worth making a sacrifice for.
Pretty easy for teams to defend against someone who has no threat at TE.

After watching Jordan Reed injury after injury after injury, I would hope we wouldn't bring in a TE coming off an injury. Draft the biggest baddest toughest TE we can and at least start with someone who might be durable. That's my vote.

On a side note one of my concerns is that Rivera and company aren't aggressive enough cutting the chaff off this roster. I want Chris Thompson, Reed, Norman, Richardson - and a number of others gone.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I have a feeling a lot of the Allen/Gruden fetish players will be goneskies. Bryce Love is theoretically the “new” CT, only it's yet another inured player drafted and no one knows what he can do at this level or even if he's physically able.

I don't necessarily disagree, but we need more than 1 TE, there aren't many to choose from in the draft, and we have limited premium draft picks. We absolutely cannot go into next season with getting at least 2 new TE's.
