Burner’s Burning Questions – The Mock Draft, Part Eight (Continual Updates)
BBQ continues the 2013 series of mock drafts and will provide constant updates based on team needs, free agency additions/losses, and injuries. This is the eighth mock of the new season and it will be updated again on Wednesday and Friday. The BBQ mocks will be a daily feature next week. Feel free to add your own ideas and mocks as we go along.
Team needs center mostly on the defensive secondary. Some of these issues could be settled (somewhat) in free agency, but we will address those concerns in future mocks, if needed.
Round 2:
With a draft that is deep in talent at many positions, the Redskins trade down to the early third round and pick up an early fourth rounder.
Round 3:
Philip Thomas – Safety, Fresno State
The Redskins waste no time in upgrading a horrible secondary and in particular, their safety corps. Thomas has a nose for the ball and is an interception machine.
Round 3:
Jordan Poyer – Cornerback, Oregon State
Poyer had a solid 2012 season and showed well at the Senior Bowl. He needs to improve his abilities against the run, but the coverage skills are superb.
Round 4:
Nick Kasa – Tight End, Colorado
Kasa is a massive TE with natural ability as a pass catcher. He would be a force on the offensive line, an asset in the running game, and a potent weapon in the passing game.
Round 4:
Montori Hughes – Defensive Tackle, Tennessee-Martin
Hughes comes from a small school, but could have a big impact at the next level. His stats are spectacular and he had a very impressive 2012 campaign.
Round 5:
Will Davis – Cornerback, Utah State
Davis is a cornerback who has the uncanny ability to improve in each and every game – and did so for the Aggies. Once an unheralded prospect, he could become an absolute stud in the NFL.
Round 5:
Stefphon Jefferson – Running Back, Nevada
We don’t need a running back? Ok, that’s fine, but Mike Shanahan has this uncanny habit of finding hidden gems at this position and Jefferson fits the bill. Many scouts are calling him this year’s Alfred Morris. Jefferson’s offense ran the pistol and he had a great year. His character is rated as extremely high. Enough said.
Round 6:
Ray Ray Armstrong – Safety, Miami
The big concerns about Armstrong center on his off the field issues and being away from the game for a year. First, he appears to have put the past behind him. Second, a year away from the game should not hurt what could be a huge steal for the Redskins. With incredible size, speed, and talent for a safety, Armstrong simply can’t be ignored at this juncture in the draft.
Round 7:
Oday Aboushi – Offensive Tackle, Virginia
Aboushi’s stock continues to fall and is not a highly rated offensive lineman. It is recognized that his skills are not suited to a traditional blocking scheme, but he has more than enough talent and ability to play quite well in a zone blocking scheme.
