I would agree if it wasn't for Griffin. I don't think Shanahan thought he'd win the division in year three.

If Griffin is healthy and we shore up the defense I would think this team is a realistic competitor and the only team in the division that would pose a real threat is the Giants - they're a 'better' team currently, but as we've seen that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I can't believe I just said that. It's a point I've dreamed about being at as a fan. This team is finally doing things the right way - doesn't mean they'll definitely win a super bowl but it certainly gives them the best chance.

Hmmm....+1's on both Phillip Thomas and Duke Williams. I wonder if there's a chance of a total overhaul at the safety position and we end up drafting both a SS and FS.

Merriweather played great, for 2 quarters. We can't seriously be counting on him? Best case he plays while a young kid we draft is groomed. Probable case he winds up Jamal Brown part deux

Burner’s Burning Questions – The Mock Draft, Part Six (Continual Updates)

Like last year, BBQ will do a series of mock drafts and will provide continual updates based on team needs, free agency additions/losses, and injuries. This is the sixth mock of the new season and it will be updated twice this week and three times next week. The frequency of mocks will increase as we get closer to the draft and it will be a daily feature in the final week. Feel free to add your own ideas and mocks as we go along.

Team needs are S, CB, RT, and DL. Some of these issues could be settled (somewhat) in free agency, but we will address those potential signings in future mocks.

Round 2:
D.J. Swearinger – Safety, South Carolina
The first order of business for the Redskins on day two of the draft will focus on the secondary. They start with Swearinger, a player who has a bit of a nasty streak about him.

Round 3:
The Redskins trade down several spots and pick up a late fifth rounder in the process.

Round 3:
T.J. McDonald – Safety, Southern California
The Redskins waste no time in upgrading a horrible secondary and in particular, their safety corps. McDonald has great size and athleticism.

Round 4:
Terry Hawthorne – Cornerback, Illinois
He has good size and quickness for a CB and is very physical. Hawthorne’s performance in the Shrine game boosted his stock.

Round 5:
Stefphon Jefferson – Running Back, Nevada
We don’t need a running back? Ok, that’s fine, but Mike Shanahan has this uncanny habit of finding hidden gems at this position and Jefferson fits the bill. Many scouts are calling him this year’s Alfred Morris. Jefferson’s offense ran the pistol and he had a great year. His character is rated as extremely high. Enough said.

Round 5:
Will Davis – Cornerback, Utah State
Davis is a cornerback who has the uncanny ability to improve in each and every game – and did so for the Aggies. Once an unheralded prospect, he could become an absolute stud in the NFL.

Round 5:
Montori Hughes – Defensive Tackle, Tennessee-Martin
Hughes comes from a small school, but could have a big impact at the next level. His stats are spectacular and he had a very impressive 2012 campaign.

Round 6:
Oday Aboushi – Offensive Tackle, Virginia
Aboushi is not a highly rated offensive lineman, but he has the ability and speed to play quite well in a zone blocking scheme..

Round 7:
Omoregie Uzzi – Guard, Georgia Tech
Uzzi is a prospect that would be a very poor fit in traditional blocking schemes, but a perfect fit for the zone blocking teams. He is very mobile and continues to play with a high motor until the whistle is blown.

how do you feel about the theory of trading picks in this years draft to get higher/better quality picks in next years draft?
 
Only if they can move up a few picks and not give up too much in the process. I haven't abandoned the idea of getting Cyprien - he could fall further down than expected and we may make the move. For now, his stock has risen and is probably out of our range.

WOW! Jeremiah has four corners and four safeties going in the first round. I certainly hope not, otherwise we could be reaching for a corner or safety or drafting a WR at 51. That looks like a trade-down scenario unless our FO considers Swearinger, Rambo or Phillip Thomas worthy of that pick and they're still on the board.

Blidi Wreh-Wilson would likely be available. This is a very deep draft for the secondary, so it wouldn't surprise me to see that many go in the first round.

Lawrence had an impact season in 2012 and consistently displayed superior skills at the outside linebacker position. He could be an absolute steal at this juncture of the draft.

BB, while I would be ecstatic if this came to pass, it seems like wishful thinking that we could trade DOWN in the third and STILL get Thomas. Personally, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell he slips past the middle of the 3rd round but if nobody needs a safety at that point then I suppose it's possible. I just don't see it.

And, for what it's worth, I could see the Skins using a late round pick on Ray Ray Armstrong instead of hoping to grab him as a UDFA. Sure, it's a gamble but if people are clamoring for the Honey Badger in the 4th then why not Armstrong in the 5th, 6th or 7th?
 
That's the thing about mocks - none of them are perfect and everyone disagrees. :)

When I post a mock, it is generally based on team needs, what the FO is currently thinking (we try to guess on that one), and where a player is currently trending. Cyprien was well within our reach - if the draft had occurred in early March. We'll see where Thomas is trending in a couple of weeks and each mock will try to reflect the current trends.

And feel free to post your mocks my friends.

I'd be shocked if Brown fell to us considering he's probably the #1 ILB prospect but no way would I have a problem with it. That would be a real value pick.

It seems a handful of guys always seem to fall a lot farther than expected but we just don't seem to get THAT lucky although I'd say we're overdue to get a steal, especially in the 3rd, where we probably reached for McRib last year. To me, filling needs while getting real value would almost be too good to be true.

BTW, BB....LOVE the pick of Jefferson in the 5th round. Heck, if we somehow picked up all three of those 5th round guys, I'd be thrilled.
 
Been trying to brush up on the draft a little bit(still a novice..lol) but the more highlights I watch and the more I read....I hope the Skins find a way to get Jonathan Bostic(Lb/Fla) on this team.

Seems like the perfect guy for London to groom who would take his place.

What do you guys think?
