~***Breaking***~ - Sam Howell traded to Seattle

Well, I think when you have a quarterback room where the players and scheme are a fit you are more efficient and suffer less in adjustments when changes in lineup occur from injury, etc.

That’s just my take although I recall an article in the Baltimore Sun where they were discussing backup quarterbacks and teams’ strategies on how to stock their rosters.

The Ravens try to maintain that continuity in scheme and fit and find it works for them.

So I am guessing as to motivations.

But during this time of year you can’t always take things on face value. Agents pump up clients as being wanted by more teams, etc.

Unless Peters came out and said the team was trying to sign Darnold can we be sure that was the case?

Darnold wants to get a chance to compete and start. Otherwise, he could have stayed in SF and tried to get a ring in 2024 as a backup. Why would he chose to come here to hold for extra points and field goals at 27?

With Brian Johnson’s connection to MM I am not surprised he signed here.

I am wondering if Kingsbury asked Johnson about FA veterans and MM was identified as a guy that fit their parameters for 2024, with the selection of a young passer in the draft.

If Kliff wants a starter and backup who have different skill sets or styles of play then that’s me learning his way of coaching.

I'm obviously not serious about telling anyone not to post - but I did read the Darnold stuff from multiple sources and believe it. Anyway, gonna be a little excruciating (if that's a thing) for the next several weeks as folks try to read tea leaves and the rumor mill really gets going.

As much as we all appreciate Sam, it was a little unreasonable to expect a new regime to come in and literally fumigate the entire building, but spare Sam.

I might be way off here, but I viewed this initially as the following...

a) Howell for a 3rd (which in isolation I don't think any of us would have objected to Sam for a top 80 pick).

b) Seattle then turning around and saying a 3rd is a bit too rich, so to balance it out trade us your 4th and 6th for their 5th.

Seems decent to me given the circumstances and given that Peters is on a mission to do a complete teardown of what was a 4-13 team...and this is coming from someone who would have went into 2024 with Sam again and traded out of 2.

I think something worth mentioning... this may not be nearly as much about the team not believing Howell had potential... it may be a lot more about the mechanics of having two very young QBs and how the offensive coaching would manage trying to bring more than one guy along effectively. They clearly looked at Howell and said, while he may have significant talent, he's not going to get the attention required here to ever reach his potential as a 3rd or even backup QB, and also likely believing they are on the threshold of drafting a QB with better measureables and fewer flaws. It's extremely difficult to manage/coach up one young QB , much less trying to do it with two of them.

One other thing with Howell. Quinn faced him twice last year and owned him both times. It’s very possible he saw weakness in his game and knew how to exploit it. So he may have had some input into this. Time will tell if the team is correct. But if they saw a broken and shaken QB and they knew they would cut him, then getting anything for him is a bonus. I had hoped Sam would work out, but his last stretch of football had me doubt that he will.

I agree. Sam’s departure is a sign we are drafting at 2 and not moving down.

Plus Mariota knows his role and is a better fit as a mentor and leader for the young qb.

but its not sam for a 3rd. I would have been cheering if that was what it was, But it was Sam and swaping 2 picks. Hell if it had been Sam and swapping 1 pick and a 5th or 6th I would have been happy. But we moved up with two picks and gave up a very cheap QB with an arm and with knowledge that he can play in the NFL at some level, hell I would say he may become a better qb than Mariota ever has been. or at least equal to him

We had the same this year and most years, We had a young starter , a vet back up and a young-min starts 3rd qb

There was no way that we were ever getting a 3rd for Howell - zero chance. He was a 5th round pick who showed a lot of arm talent, good mobility, but also some glaring issues. I think it was a stretch to believe we could even get a 4th for him. I mean the bottom line is, once you've decided to move him, the market dictates what he's worth. Just the way it works.

Did Atlanta get more for Ridder, a player with fewer starts and less of an arm just hours earlier?

Moore is a 24 year old former #2 pick with deep speed.

So - help me out here. I keep hear the 'Signing Mariota is a tell that they are going to draft Jayden Daniels'. I keep hearing it despite it coming out yesterday that before the team signed Mariota, they TRIED to sign Sam Darnold.

That absolutely invalidates the idea that the Mariota signing is some kind of 'tell' about their draft plans. What it does tell you is that they wanted a vet to help mentor and perhaps bridge the way for a drafted rookie. Unless someone has something else, please stop repeating it lol... They may damn well draft Daniels, but the Mariota move has absolutely nothing to do with it.

On Sam, I don't like it. A) The kid was going to be an uber-cheap backup at worst. B) Howell has an NFL arm. A pretty big-time NFL arm. We all saw it over and over last season. C) You cannot make reliable assessments based on one full season with dubious coaching. So I don't like it. I will certainly not argue that we will 'live to regret it' because the odds of any young QB developing into a star are not great. So whether he was here or in Seattle, it's probably less than likely he's ever more than a very good backup.

Bottom line, it's a new day. We have grownups and smart football people coming out of our wazoo. And they deserve our trust and benefit of the doubt until they don't. It's also not a perfect world. You are faced with dilemmas, tough decisions, and have to make tough calls some of which won't work out. It comes with the territory.

Love me some Sam Howell. What a great kid. I hope he has a great career.
But, but, but…what if they changed their mind on which QB to draft after talking to Darnold? Huh? 🤓

Exactly.

I’m guessing there was very little market for Sam. Seattle was where he played one of his best games, and definitely his last good game. This is all they would give up. I would bet there was nothing else even close to this being offered.

I agree there was never a 3rd in play, but claiming these swapped pickes are just like getting a third is a huge reach.

if you go by the old Jimmy Johnson draft pick value chart it's equivalent to a late 3rd round pick.

I dont know that i fully endorse that, but I don't think '3rd round pick' is their valuation point either. They're looking at it like a guy who's not in their future plans, and they just flipped an asset to improve their overall draft status by a combined 51 places in the draft.

Thank you for sharing...

On that note, I was just going to say that you don't make a potential move back up into the first round with day 3 picks. You do it with day 1 and 2 picks and we currently have 6 in the top 100. We are as well positioned as anybody in the league if we want to climb back up into round 1 to complement our new QB with a brand new LT to grow with for the next ten years.

I don't care about "value"so getting a 5th, 6th and 7th are about equal to a late 3rd. And in the NFL the talent of a 3rd is normally much higher than a 5th 6th and 7th combined
