~***Breaking***~ - Sam Howell traded to Seattle

We all believed it though. Up until his interview with the colts, they didn't know which one they were going to take overall.

I think both teams probably look at this as a win in some regard. Anyone looking a the Commanders sees a team that doesn't need Howell, and probably doesn't have big future plans for them. In other words, no one is in a rush to overpay. So, then the question becomes, how much patience does WAS exercise with him, also (as burgold pointed out) - this is doing Howell a solid if he can compete for a starting position.

This is one of those moves you can easily see both teams feeling they got a good thing out of it. Many of us are going to react poorly to it, but if the Commanders were convinced that Howell wasn't going to do well here, or that he wouldn't be all that useful (especially post Mariota), then I can see them figuring the roster spot he takes up is excessive. EB did Howell no favors last year; the tape that was made was very poor, and sometimes it is hard to separate the plays from the player, the stats don't show everything there by a long shot. The other part of this that is key is Howell was already scouted by these guys (e.g. Peters), so they could already have feelings on Howell and where he would project. Last year's tape/stats may have only confirmed what they felt, and at that point, freeing up the spot becomes more important than anything else. In some instances there, taking TWO gambles on QBs (??) could be a move to roll the dice and get a great player. Remember that some reclamations end up working out better than anyone expects.

So, I imagine both FOs feel they made a great move here. I am pretty sure most of our fanbase feels like we were fleeced because Howell definitely carried himself well and was undeniably in a bad situation last year. Time will tell. My opinion would be to keep Howell but I hardly blame them if they felt they needed to move on; they may feel they can get better without him than with him, and that argument isn't the most absurd thing in the world. He may be much better than what we saw last year, and then again he may not be; he definitely made some bad mistakes at bad times, and while better playcalling may help him avoid those, it suggests a lower ceiling than what some of us hope for him I think. Remember he is on year 3 of his rookie contract this year, not year 2.

EB was the third time Andy Reid has screwed us.

First there was the Donovan McNabb trade when McNabb was clearly a rapidly declining player who had a big ego and big mouth to boot.

Then there was the panic move made by Bruce Allen to trade for Alex Smith, age 34, and give him $70M contract extension and free up cap space for Andy Reid to go out and sign players that helped the Chiefs win in 2019.

Last year a dead in the water Rivera regime agreed to accept a guy in EB that couldn't seem to find a job driving the car with any other franchise.

The result? Few if any players in retrospect believe they were used to their capabilities in 2023.

Dysfunction begets consistent failures.

Daniels has a lot of talent. But watching his film, he does have a slight frame and the 6'3 1/2 and 210 draft bio is obviously a bit generous.

If we do draft him, he is going to have to learn to become more of a pocket passer that runs when he has to rather than a quarterback that runs when his first read is covered or he feels the slightest pressure.

Lamar Jackson is a unicorn, I hate it when draftniks and fans look at any young African-American quarterback who can run and compare them to him.

The fact is Jackson is a rare ruby. He was able to come in and hold up for 2 years making dynamic plays on the outside while he learned to play the quarterback position in the NFL.

His durability is amazing, especially given the fact the Ravens haven't exactly surrounded him with Tyreek Hill or CeeDee Lamb to throw to, although he does now have a legit running back who can dish out the punishment in the playoffs in bad weather in Derrick Henry.

Sam has 2 years left

And daniels will be broken within 2 years he runs like rg3
It is what it is friend, new regime in charge so I'm not going to be overly negative already(Not saying you are doing so, just in general). I liked Sam, but obviously Quinn and company want to go in another direction.

We'll see how it pans out. I do think Daniels has all the tools, but yes we shall also see how durable he is.

Sucks.

Sam Howell got just as raw a deal here as the fans did under Rivera.
Will always cheer for Sam and hope that in Seattle, they actually give him the help a young Qb needs.

I dont mind the trade overall - i just think a pick swap was not enough swap one set and get a 5th or 6th. That way you actually get the same number of roster spots covered. And just because the two pick swaps on a chart = the value of a third does not make it trading sam for a third.

In Peters’ eyes that #78 pick early to mid third round must be worth a lot given the depth of the draft at several key positions.

wouldn't surprise me if that picks is included in a deal to move back into the first, or possibly up to 1.

I'd be good with moving back up into the middle of the first to get a tackle... not so much about moving up to 1st overall.

I would rather take Daniels at #2 than deal up to #1.

Dealing up to #1 means giving up those picks we were counting on to find answers at OT, TE, WR, CB, etc.

I'd rather trade back for more and get lots of OT and possibly Fields.

Huzzah for your opinion!!

Yeah, but you decided to take a shot directly and all I did was say I wanted to trade back for more OT. Don't get personal with me again.

I can handle what comes my way.

Agree on OTs.

Think Fields on a one year trial is a sucker’s game given his performance to date.

So - help me out here. I keep hear the 'Signing Mariota is a tell that they are going to draft Jayden Daniels'. I keep hearing it despite it coming out yesterday that before the team signed Mariota, they TRIED to sign Sam Darnold.

That absolutely invalidates the idea that the Mariota signing is some kind of 'tell' about their draft plans. What it does tell you is that they wanted a vet to help mentor and perhaps bridge the way for a drafted rookie. Unless someone has something else, please stop repeating it lol... They may damn well draft Daniels, but the Mariota move has absolutely nothing to do with it.

On Sam, I don't like it. A) The kid was going to be an uber-cheap backup at worst. B) Howell has an NFL arm. A pretty big-time NFL arm. We all saw it over and over last season. C) You cannot make reliable assessments based on one full season with dubious coaching. So I don't like it. I will certainly not argue that we will 'live to regret it' because the odds of any young QB developing into a star are not great. So whether he was here or in Seattle, it's probably less than likely he's ever more than a very good backup.

Bottom line, it's a new day. We have grownups and smart football people coming out of our wazoo. And they deserve our trust and benefit of the doubt until they don't. It's also not a perfect world. You are faced with dilemmas, tough decisions, and have to make tough calls some of which won't work out. It comes with the territory.

Love me some Sam Howell. What a great kid. I hope he has a great career.

if we move up to one and take that mental case Williams as QB I will become someone without a team. And I have been a fan since the first season I can remember 72. I will lose complete faith in the new owners and the new staff. Because that would be a DAN move and he almost drove me away.
