The Redskins and Cowboys according to Adam S on 106.7 the fan are going to lose 36 milion and 10 million in cap space respectively. Allegedly this is because both teams front loaded contracts during a non cap year.

Don't contracts have to go thru the NFL offices for approval?

Godell can just go to **** if we lose that much cap space.

The salary cap is projected to be $120.6 million in 2012, but the Cowboys will lose $10 million, while the Redskins will be docked $36 million in cap space, sources said.

Dallas and Washington can split the cap loss over the 2012 and '13 seasons in whatever form they prefer, with $1.6 million each going to 28 other NFL teams, the sources said.

The New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders are the only two teams that will not receive a portion of the money.

During the pre-lockout 2010 season, the collective bargaining agreement expired and the league operated without a salary cap.

According to sources, the Cowboys and Redskins took immediate cap hits during the 2010 season that normally would have been spread out over the length of the contracts, giving them an advantage that other NFL owners found unfair.

The league took an abnormally long time to release the 2012 cap number, due in part to the fact that the league was trying to decide how to handle the issues, the sources said.

According to the sources, the deductions are not termed as violations, but are part of a recent agreement the NFL and the Players Association made to raise the salary cap number while preserving benefit increases and the performance pool.

NFL takes millions in cap space away from Cowboys, 'Skins

The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins will have considerably less to work with when free agency opens on Tuesday.

The NFL has taken away millions in salary cap space from both teams after the two NFC East clubs pushed spending into the uncapped year to save money under the cap in 2011 and '12.

The money taken from Dallas and Washington will be put back into the pool, and spread in cap space among the other clubs. Teams were warned not to spend into the uncapped year as a way of circumventing the salary cap in the future.

$36 million, over the next 2 seasons for us. We can apparently spread that out over 2012 and 2013 however we choose. Because the NFL is, you know, magnanimous.

This one's going to blow up big time.

Godell just screwed our team for years to come. And now we can see how his dictator like attitude affects us. We did not break any effing rules and this Socialist power mad a-hole waits to do this on the eve of free agency?

We might as well move the bitchfest here and leave the FA agency thread for talk of any FA's we end up being able to sign....

It is so interesting that our 36 million dollar shafting is because of the 21 million to Haynesworth and 15 million to Hall, but the Cowboys are losing 10 million out of the 17 million they gave to their player.

Time to repeal if not threaten to sue.

NFL takes cap space from Cowboys, Redskins for front-loading deals in 2010
By Will Brinson | Senior NFL Blogger

2010 was an uncapped year, as a result of the previous Collective Bargaining Agreement expiring. The Redskins and Cowboys, despite warnings from the NFL not to do so, front-loaded contracts to create more salary cap room going forward.

CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman has confirmed an earlier report that the NFL has punished them for it, taking away $36 million in cap space from the Redskins and $10 million from the Cowboys because they front-loaded contracts in 2010.

Well I'm available AND can fit nicely under any cap.

That makes you feel better now, doesn't it?

Not much else to say at this point. I'm going to try a new approach:

I get all that, but again, those contracts need to be approved. Why approve them if you are going to punish for them later? Also, why in the name of all that is holy is this being done 24 hours before FA starts?

Per @AdamSchefter, #Cowboys + #Redskins cap hits are not "violations." Part of agreement by NFL and NFLPA on cap, performance pool, benefits

Cowboys, Redskins punished ... but why?

Free agency just got a whole lot less exciting for fans of the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, who may have a lot less to spend on free agents than they originally thought.

Adam Schefter reports that the NFL has docked the Cowboys $10 million in cap space and the Redskins $36 million in cap space for dumping large chunks of long-term contracts into the uncapped 2010 season. The teams are allowed to split the penalties up over the next two seasons, so technically this might not affect either team's spending until 2013. But you have to believe they'd be wise to get at least some of it out of the way this year.

We had the Cowboys at $12.667 million under the cap before they put an $8.8 million franchise tag on Anthony Spencer, so the full penalty would actually put them over the cap and even if they took $4 million of the hit this year they'd still have work to do to get under. We had the Redskins as $47.568 million under the cap before they put a $5.4 million franchise tag on Fred Davis, which means they could take their whole penalty this year and still be under.

What'd they do wrong? Well, they apparently violated no actual rule but rather a behind-the-scenes guideline designed to keep the uncapped year from truly being uncapped.

How is this a salary cap violation if it was not apparently written in the previous CBA / rules but only voiced by this pompus arrogant a-hole of a commisioner?

Danny and Jerrah if they do not appeal should go AlDavis on the NFL's butt immediately.

Wanna really get pissed? Here, evidently, is the precedent, an article about the Broncos. Excpet that it entails losing draft picks and fines, and no where does it mention salary cap space:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28969-2004Sep17.html

The penalties imposed Thursday on the Denver Broncos for violations of the league's rules regarding the disclosure of deferred compensation to players and the salary cap were the second sanctions against the team for similar infractions in less than three years.

In December 2001, the Broncos were fined $968,000 and lost a third-round pick in the 2002 draft for violations reportedly relating to $29 million in deferred payments to quarterback John Elway and running back Terrell Davis.

This is from Andrew Brandt:

The Cowboys, who always pay big signing bonuses, paid Miles Austin a $17M salary in 2010, thus not prorated. Owners were furious.

EDIT: news on Twitter seems to indicate this was more owner-initiated than league.

So apparently, the other owners are stupid, and must not realize where most of their shared revenue comes from. Danny and Jerry are gonna be fun to deal with for the Mike Browns of the world the next time the collective bargaining agreement is up. Talk about short term gain and long term losses.

Morons.

Again from Brandt:

Again, no written warnings about loading uncapped year, but verbal warnings on "abusing uncapped year." Owners pushed for punishment.

And to answer, this is clip Danny should send every one of the:

This is collusion, plain and simple. Anti-trust laws, anyone? My strategy would be to apply all $36M to next year's Cap, and then sue the pants off the NFL.

OR - could have given all 30 other teams extra cap space to make up for it. But this is unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE! I'm literally steaming from my ears I'm so mad.

Yep, this is ugly. My guess is that Dan and Jerry could afford to do some things with the cap that the other teams couldn't, in order to work the salary cap to their advantage. Those owners momentarily lost sight of the fact that without the Redskins and Cowboys' shared revenue, none of them are as rich as they think they are (in terms of their NFL teams, not outside streams of revenue), and decided to bitch about both teams breaking some imaginary rules.

Everyone acknowledges there is nothing written down, just verbal stuff. I've always been taught by HR that if it isn't written down, it can't have been that important, so it doesn't carry that much weight.

As Lanky said, I defer all or most of the hit, and get a team of lawyers to go nuts. I have a feeling Jerry and Danny can afford it.

And then, during the next collective bargaining agreement discussion, I tell Jax and Cincy and the other poor teams to go eff themselves when they talk about increasing revenue sharing.
