Thanks for the link G. Those are some awesome stats and comparisons. We won't win a Super Bowl this year, but we could be moving a lot closer to that goal within the next two or three seasons. Like I said earlier in the thread, Coach Shanahan is drafting for the long term and that simply indicates his commitment to the Redskins. This is nothing but a positive.

Too, I have no problems with so called nepotism, especially when you have competent workers/leadership. I'm excited for Kyle Shanahan's future and could see a scenario where Dad moves to the FO and the transistion to a head coach (guess who? Well, duh!) is seamless. We could be looking at a lot of great leadership and stability for the next fifteen to twenty years - or more! And, GM Allen could be here for the entire ride.

In the years ahead, we may look to the 2011 offseason as the real turning point for the Redskins and it all started with not taking the "sexy" pick. We will talk for many years about a move that brought us five extra picks and the beginning of a solid foundation that lasts for many, many years.
 
FWIW I'll also point out that we've also given ourselves some decent cap space. Taking that into account along with be the draft means this team could look very different by the the time opening day rolls around.

I like the enthusiasm. I hope that you are correct! I have a feeling the upward swing is in motion, but man I am trying to remain guarded with my optimism. I said that last year and when we beat the Cowgirls in the opener, all that guarded optimism went straight out the window! I saw playoffs.

Years of this roller coaster ride, off-season highs followed by lows once the season arrives, have truly soured me!

I can't remember the last time we had so many picks in the first 5 rounds. I know we haven't had this many since Casserly left. We can't really say this team can't make mid-round picks if we never have them.

The bottom line is I'm sick of watching this team assume that picks after the first two or three rounds are worthless. That's the attitude that got us where we are now. And frankly, if our front office is flat-out incapable of finding any value past round two we're gonna suck. Period. Draft strategy won't matter. So I don't expect a team, any team, to go into a draft with the mentality that there's no point in looking past round two. That's an admission of defeat. Defeat we've seen over and over here in DC.

Thanks for fleshing out your thought process - I get what you're saying here now. I absolutely agree with your comments. We just disagree on which is the better approach when you only have half your picks to begin with. I'm not arguing mid and late round picks are worthless. I'm arguing that when you can't afford to blow a limited number of picks, you're smarter to accept that you can't fill a lot of needs in one draft and make sure that the picks you do have result in starters. Should we be able to find a few guys that can be contributors with our remaining picks? Yes. Will we? I'm skeptical. And I know Vinny's not here now - but the Redskins have had bad karma for a long time and I'd feel a lot more secure if we'd just grabbed the best o-lineman available at #49 instead of deciding to play craps with a bunch of mid-draft picks. Just my opinion.

I agree with you and Yusuf overall - that what we are seeing is far preferable to previous strategies the Redskins have employed :) And I'm relatively happy with the 3 players we've gotten although, like Yusuf, am not sure Jenkins was worthy of the pick we used on him.

That's a good point BB. Thing that makes it challenging though is that in the remaining rounds, there's a natural tension between wanting to take the BPA (to find that hidden gem) and drafting to fill obvious needs. Be interesting to see which direction we go from here on out.

One comment I will make. The pink elephant in this draft room is what all this means about Shanahan's view of our QB issues. I don't know what the team plans to do about Mcnabb. My gut is, unless we get a value offer for him, he'll be our backup. But I'm really beginning to wonder if Kyle doesn't believe Grossman can and will be our guy.

I'm not sure how else you explain our passing on Gabbert or one of the other decent prospects we could have grabbed in this draft. We won't have a top 5 draft pick anytime soon. So if the Shanahan's don't believe our QB is on the squad - where is he going to come from?

We may have just been clued in that the Rex Grossman era has officially started.

Christian Ballard, DE
Jerrell Powe, DT I won't go on about my man crush on him again. I like big fatties, so sue me...and no, that doesn't extend to the chicks.
Clint Boling, OG
Stephen Schilling, OG Might not be a great option for us since his last name might make Larry Michael nervous about his job security
Caleb Schlauderaff, OG Decent OG prospect with the advantage of having a great football name
Taiwan Jones, RB Looks like a good returner and change of pace back. Besides, it would be nice to have an Asian on the team.
Bilal Powell, RB Not perfect for us but he runs hard and he's a FL homie :)

I won't go on but the point is there's still some good players to be had, possibly even a starter. Certainly there's plenty to choose from that could help situationally and on special teams where I'd rather not have to hold my breath worrying that B. Banks won't get broken into a million pieces every week.

I'd actually like to see us trade up into the fourth to target some players we like rather than keeping quite so many late round picks.

Me too Yusuf. I'd like our strategy so far a lot better if we were talking 4th round picks instead of a bunch of fifth rounders.
 
Eagles just traded the McNabb 4th rd. pick to Tampa - Eagles get a 4th rounder next year.
