This all makes me want to think that they were really high on Dotson then and saw him as being equivalent to a Williams/Olave.

The draft stream I was watching last night clearly said we acquired the Saints 2nd & 3rd rounders in exchange for moving back 5 spots. I was kinda excited after hearing that but bummed after seeing its actuality a 3rd & 4th.

I knew in my gut they would screw up and not take Hamilton so meh. I’m expecting a DT & G with those new picks, right after a S in the 2nd now.
 
Wildly different point system/allocation on that one for sure ...
 
I still cannot wrap my brain around the Saints making a big trade with the Eagles before the draft and then again last night with Washington to take Chris Olave.

What am I missing?

They might've gotten spooked to move up further after London and Wilson were off the board knowing that most likely more top WR's were coming off the board before pick 16.

I didn’t understand the trade pre draft. You have no idea who will be there at the time. Their trade in draft makes some sense. But combining it with the pre draft trade, it makes no sense.

They gave up the 16th, 18th, two 3rds, a 4th, a 7th, a 2023 1st, and a 2024 2nd for Olave, Penning, and a 6th rounder to be named later. That’s quite an expensive move to those two guys.

I believed at the time they were taking Pickett but then again they resigned Winston and he played well before injury last year. They must think they can still contend with what they've got and other than the Bucs the NFC South is a hot pile of garbage so I sorta maybe get it, no not really.
 
I wonder if the Saints were under the impression that WE were gonna go Olave and thats why they called.

Rivera and Co clearly had Dotson and Olave rated similarly, so if they see minimal difference between the two AND you add 2 more picks, it's a win win (thinking about their rationale)

I said it last night and i'll say it again.... they better be right. If you want to keep acting like you're smarter than everyone else, you better be smarter than everyone else.... or we all know what's gonna happen.

why take the #4 or #5 rated WR when you can select the best safety in the draft?

to me this was setting up like 2017 when we simply watched Jonathan Allen fall and we made the no brainer pick.

except this time we took a guy that even if he is very productive in the NFL is likely to be a #2 wideout.

If McLaurin leaves we still have to go out and find a #1.

Take Hamilton and then grab a WR with speed in Round 2.

That was the smart play given how the board was working out.

Instead we set up Baltimore to have a great draft.
 
I've looked at several highlight reels now on Dotson and I'm not seeing a 1st round talent to be honest, this seems like a reach just to get a WR because the others are off the board. He creates separation but it's against weaker teams, I can't see him creating that space in those highlights against NFL speed. To ST's point, they better damn well be right but I don't have the faith that they are.

Rivera was openly talking about how much he loved Olave in a few instances. I believe he personally was at his pro day as well.

If they intentionally set up a smokescreen, picked a guy who they view as being equal/potentially better than Olave, while adding a few extra picks in the process, then good on them.

We will find out in due time who was right and who was wrong in regards to the wideouts in this draft.

In the meantime, we all need to remember that we have a #1 receiver on this roster already. Sign the guy long-term and a potentially nice complimentary piece in Dotson feels a lot better.

Now, let's go knock it out of the park on Day 2 tonight.

Ratings are predictions not facts. No one knows who the real breakout WRs in this draft will be.

I have more of an issue with fixating on one position as they seem to have been absolutely determined to go WR come hell or high water. That mindset can lead to overreaching.

I don’t think it’s fair to heavily criticize this pick until we see who they get with those 2 extra picks.

Hamilton - position rank #1, overall rank #9, draft grade 92

Jahan - position rank #6, overall rank #25, draft grade 89

we can disagree on specific ratings but I don’t think anyone had Jahan in the top 3 wideouts and at #16 we should be getting a premium player

Just to be fair he had 11 catches for 127 against Ohio State




9 catches for 61 yards vs Michigan (and watching hte playback his QB was TERRIBLE early on in that game)



and had an ENORMOUS game against Maryland where he had 11 catches for 242yd and 3 tD




Maryland isn't a defensive powerhouse, but he was running away from people on the regular.
 
We didn’t just get Jahan though - right? They obviously know that sticking at 11 gives them the chance to draft a (theoretically) better player. They calculated they could add a very good WR AND get more Day 2 picks in a pretty deep draft.

Until we know what that results in it is impossible to say this was a mistake imho.

Unfortunately we will never know for sure since everyone in the building has to sign an NDA.

The kid had 3 different OCs and shitty QBs and still put up numbers that compare pretty well with the top of his class. Lowest drop rate of any WR in the draft. And he was a solid punt returner.
 
I was very upset with the pick last night (ask the poor guys in the draft party room with me) and said the exact same thing Bulldog is arguing. But this morning I took a step back and looking at it unemotionally we could end up doing really well with this trade back dependent on what happens in the mid-rounds.
