2014 Coaching Search Rumors

Shanahan had control over personnel decisions. It was in his contract. That's why he was also Team Executive VP as well as Head Coach.

It seems based on the anecdotes from his last years in Denver and his time here in Washington that Shanahan used the staff and his own judgment to make personnel decisions, largely ignoring the advice and evaluations of scouts and front office people that were paid for the team to work on personnel 24/7.

I don't know why there is such a witch hunt for others to blame.

And the talk about fast transitions and a lack of patience?

I think 4 years and a 24-40 record shows some patience.

The Cleveland coach was gone in one season, a season in which the team traded its top pick from the previous year, Trent Richardson, mid-season. Talk about being set up to fail.

How about Lovie Smith being fired after 10-6? Trestman comes in and goes 8-8 and the team has come out and said his job is safe.

What standards are they using to judge performance?

I think the Redskins were patient with Shanahan, we all were.

Through all of his self-righteous blather about running a franchise and team the right way, to his possum-like expression at press conferences after losses in which he never seemed to be able to find any tangible answers for a team in free fall.

Remember his press conference where he chided reporters about knowing quarterbacks, and putting his reputation on the line for John Beck?

There are a lot of coaching jobs where a statement like that followed by the abysmal quarterbacking in 2011 would have lead to his dismissal BEFORE 2012 and the chance to trade picks for Griffin, etc.

I agree that Shanahan has to own the brunt of the blame for 3 out of 4 failed seasons. But where I bristle is the idea that Allen and Snyder have no responsibility. I think they do. I don't see how anyone could pretend they weren't part of the organization and at some level the decision-making. Shanahan having final say doesn't mean he made every decision in isolation.

I think Snyders hands were somewhat tied. Any intervention would have gotten him lambasted. He was in a damned if he did damned if he didn't situation due to his past behaviors. Even if he and Allen intervened, Mike would have caused problems. Might even have violated Mike's contract. Another reason a coach should not wield so much power.

Tr1, have hope. There's a guy named Jay Gruden who's about to change all of that.

Bruce and Dan's hands aren't clean by any means, and are responsible for the cap disaster almost completely. With Shanny's past history of "cap abuse," I can't help think he planted the seed in their heads. They gambled, and lost. I'm sure we could come up with other instances where their input may have been involved, but my point about Bruce is, besides the cap disaster, he's done a good job of managing the money to keep the team together. Hindsight is 20/20, so weather we got what we paid for when we signed players means little now. Shanny made those choices. Was Bruce involved in player evaluation ? Nobody knows for sure, but I'd venture a guess Mike never walked into Bruce's office and asked his opinion on a player's on field performance that he wanted. Could Bruce say.. hey, I don't think this guy is gonna pan out ? With the FO structure we had, I honestly don't know. In any other FO, no doubt. I also have no doubt it could have started an internal war if Bruce started pushing Mike on personal issues. Maybe it did... Maybe we'll know some day.

The thing with the cap penalty is you can't say if they hadn't done it we would have been dandy. Snyder and Cerrato had committed 31 mill to Haynesworth and Hall we were on the hook for. So the risk, which I think was a pretty good one ended up costing us 36 mill. It's not like it was 36 mill or nothing. A calculated gamble that if not for DeMaurice Smith would have paid off.

You know what gives me hope right now? The fact that no one seems to have a clue what we're gonna do. Outside of the Gibbs hire under Snyder, there always seem to be reports and rumors about who we're gonna hire days before the hire is made. This is a nice switch.

You don't think it's pretty obvious that the remaining teams are all waiting on Jay Gruden? I'd put the odds at 99.999% that he is our next HC.

And .001% that we hire another patsy so Dan can coach, ala a Zorn, like the ST coach from Dallas.

This is not going to end well again. I'm old. I'd like to see the Skins get to the SB before I die. I know it won't happen as long as The Danny is the owner.

I guess I'm finally dealing with that reality.
Well then, the only thing left for you to do, is find another team to exhibit selective support of.

If you're right, which you must be (just ask you), then you would be insane, both legally and literally, to put yourself through such repugnant abuse. If Dan Snyder is the sadist, Orin Scrivello - D.D.S., then your incessant stalking, combined with voluntarily jumping back into the dentist chair every chance you get, makes you the masochist, Arthur Denton. Of course, it's only funny in the movie.

But then again, you also appear to enjoy inflicting pain on those who do not share your Dan Snyder obsession. It hurts to see you play the role of Evelyn Draper, every...****in...second...of every...****in...day. It accomplishes nothing. It serves no meaningful purpose. Unless you're plotting to kill him. You can snivel, and whine, and moan, and bitch, and complain all you want. He's not selling the team.

Using your approach, one could just as easily argue that we've sucked ever since you've been a member here, because your poor attitude taints all Redskins fans. And until you close your account, and go away, forever, nothing will change. Therefore, if you really love the team, you'll go away, so the rest of us can get a break from your meddling with "The Force" of Redskins fandom. Making you "The Danny", of BGObsession.

Think about it, Dan.

While not a eloquent as you, I recently had this same argument with someone. Unless he dies, Dan Snyder is the owner of this team for likely 20-25 more years...at least. He's not even 50 yet. Accept this fact and hope for him to mature as an owner, which the last 4 years seem to indicate, or just root for another team.

tr1, we've had our disagreements in the PA and I will leave those differences over there. However, this latest rampage over Snyder is falling on deaf ears. While some of us will never accept fully Dan Snyder is anything other than the devil, at the very least some of us understand he is going nowhere. Will that sour us against the team forever? I don't know about you, but I am not willing...yet. We'll see what the next 5 years brings us. I'm a glutton for punishment, so...

Jay Gruden is quickly becoming my first choice also, and Bisaccia has to be better than Burns, but I'm not sure we could hire him laterally.

Hey, McD. How do you feel about Jay Gruden?

I'm not sure we're clear on your stance here. :banghead:

Aren't you always clamoring for more positivity in these threads? Do you think a post like this hurts, or helps?

So let me get this straight. Your all's position is, unless posting an opinion here 'changes something', there's no point in expressing it.

Well, thanks. That pretty much means that there's no point in having this messageboard, since NOTHING anyone says here - EVER - will impact what moves the team makes, or what happens on the field.

I'll keep pointing this out. Many here fled a site they once loved because it became clear, unless you towed the party line, had the right 'acceptable' opinions (be it regarding the Redskins, politics, or how you felt about staff), you were let know pretty quickly whether you were welcome or not. We don't have a pack mentality here, and we're not going to. As long as they do it reasonably civilly minus personal enmity, people can say what they want, and you can say what you want. When posts tread into territory where you are telling fellow members what kinds of posts fit here, and what kind don't, you're wrong. When your posts indicate who is welcome here and who's not, you're wrong.

And again, the shouting down of people who don't have an 'acceptable' viewpoint isn't what the place we built and are trying to build here is about.

What's your basis for that statement tr1? What in Gruden's history suggests he couldn't come in here and be successful?

If they hire Gruden, how many years do I have to wait for better than 8-8? I'm going to hold you to it ;-)

If this team is being run like a legit organization then the GM sets the vision and tone for the organization. The coaches brought in should be brought in to match the players the GM is bringing in.

No more 'system' coaches that have to spend 2 years bringing in 'their guys' before they can be evaluated.

The new coach needs to go 8-8 with this team next year and be on the + side of .500 the following year at a minimum. I'd honestly expect better the first year.

That's the benefit of being structured this way. We should be able to tell early on if the coach is a fit or not. I would hope Allen can make that decisions prior to hiring the guy, but this is his first test so we'll see.

This isn't the 2009 Redskins where everyone knew the whole team had to be blown out; players, culture, etc. There's a winning football team at Redskins park, and with the right additions (and subtractions) it could be a very good team.

We won a division title with evil Dan Snyder as owner. I wish we had a different owner - we share that view. But your current position, that we are doomed to never have on the field success with Snyder as owner, wouldn't seem to be supported by the facts. I get the general sentiment, because I sometimes feel the same way. But coaches can win here. Gibbs did it. And at least for one year here, Shanahan did it. And so can a new coach we bring in.

NOTE TO MIKE: Did you notice the positivity in this post?! I'm working on it :)

I didn't say I wouldn't be delighted if he succeeds.

I'm just pessimistic because of the front office's history dealing with coaches. The only guy I saw DS stay pretty much hands off was with Gibbs.

Once again we're in a zone where we can let two or three more years of bad football be excused because of a coaching change. It'll be the excuse du jour if he starts off badly. I'd like to see another KC story or even Philly story, but my reservations about the FO make me hesitant.

It kind of sounds like you feel there are zero coaches that could work out for success. Talk about glass more than half empty! That's gotta be tough to stay a fan if the chances for success are impossible.

I gave you a heads up but you've opted for the kicking and screaming route :)

Recovery is a different process for everybody :) It's a sunny day here in NC, hard to sustain ugly pessimism on a day like today.
