2014 Coaching Search Rumors

i really don't know much about coaches. it's quite entertaining reading all the opinions on people.

Hire someone who's had SUCCESS - at anything, at any level. Let's start there :)

Who cares what the coach costs? That's Snyder's concern. What has either Morris or Haslett done to inspire even a modicum of confidence? It's not going to happen, and it shouldn't. Either of them will be the luckiest bastards in America if they even have a job when the dust settles.

Well, to your first question, it's like saying who cares that we over-pay players like we have in the past. What's the difference in over-paying a player compared to a coach. Your second question, who's out there that is a hot commodity that people have been talking about as the next great HC. There isn't anyone, none. The barrel is empty.

Imo, other then John Gruden who doesn't want the job, were going to end up settling for someone worse then we fired.

Coaching dollars don't apply in the salary cap Go Deep - if Snyder wants to hire Obama to be our head coach for a gazillion dollars a year, it does not impact the salary cap in any way. That's a huge difference. As to your second comment, in terms of a 'hot commodity' - I never said we had to go after a 'hot commodity'. Sometimes 'hot commodities' turn out to be great coaches, and sometimes they turn out to be Steve Spurrier. But one of these young coordinators or college coaching studs is the next Joe Gibbs. I guarantee you that. It's just a matter of finding which one is 'that guy'. Am I confident we'll be the team that finds him? Not especially. But I don't doubt a diamond-in-the-rough future coaching star is sitting somewhere out there waiting for us to give him his opportunity.

And define 'someone worse than we fired'? I'm pretty sure I could coach the Redskins to a 3-13 record. I don't think we should be terribly afraid that we just fired Vince Lombardi. He wasn't, and we didn't.

People talk in the NFL and Dan talking to Bill didn't have to be about a HC position.

Bill Cowher..Will never happen and there is no interest in making it happen. Pretty sure everyone has killed this rumor at this point.

Which makes me wonder if the Redskins were picking Bill's brain about Whisenhunt and some of Bill's former staff.

Boone, I know coaches salaries don't count towards the cap.:beadyeyes2: What I'm talking about is paying a small fortune for a coach who has no incentive to succeed because he's signed a contract that could retire 10 people comfortably regardless if he wins or not.

Define someone worse than we fired? are you serious? Because Shanahan went 3-13 one year that discredits everything else he done in his career including winning a divisional championship here. Something that hasn't happened around here in 13 years.

Like I said to begin with, I think it was a bad decision to fire him unless you had a plan of something better. We didn't, it was just a knee jerk decision, and now we have no coach and no plan moving forward. I firmly believed we were 2 years from being where we all wanted to be and now that's more than likely all up in smoke.

They should do a performance based coaching salary structure. Maybe a mill or 2 a year with a 20,000,000 bonus for making the Super Bowl and 50,000,000 for winning it. ;)

I'm not trying to be insulting - honest. I'm like everyone else here - what the hell do I know? But your post asked what the difference between paying a player a king's ransom and a coach - there's a huge difference. Yeah, it's possible that if we hire someone just looking for a big payday, that it doesn't pan out. But that doesn't mean that going discount and hiring someone internally, when no one internally has even shown themselves to be particularly gifted in their current role, makes any sense.

Up until the last 60 days, I'd have been arguing what you seem to be arguing. I have given Shanahan and company a lot of credit for last year. But I also hold the coaching staff accountable for the events of this year. I was not nearly as concerned with the 3-13 record (which I chalk up mostly to Griffin's injury and a first place schedule) but Shanahan totally lost the team this year, and his behavior under pressure was nothing short of despicable. The fact that the team had a horrible year and he appeared to have zero answers (or even the will to try and pull off some wins down the stretch) was just secondary.

Where your confidence in the previous staff's direction comes from, I don't know. If Shanahan had been the grown-up amidst all the drama this year, instead of actively contributing to it, I might agree with you that we ride it out and even extend him. But that's not what we saw. What we saw was a childish, egotistical coach who was more about himself than the team. And when it came to keeping his job, there was barely a peep out of the guy indicating he wanted to stay and finish what he started. He wanted out of DC and that's what he got. That's what I saw anyway.

A short time ago, Shanahan was spotted at Dulles and on his way to Denver.

My reasoning for Haslett or Morris comes from wanting to stay the direction we were inand being familiar with the situation. Nothing more than that other then I don't think there's any real good candidates out there. I didn't like Shanahan personally, but the players obviously did and I thought he had us on the right track.

I think Shanahan did have answers for this season. Like you mentioned, RG3 being hurt, tough schedule and the cap created major holes which imo is Allen's fault, not Shanahan's.

As far as the stories that were supposedly leaked, Bruce said those were false, or that's what I got out of it at least.

Anyway, that's all I have and I realize Haslett or Morris could and rightfully so be considered ridiculous.

Morris would be a real bad move. Not that I'd really love Haz as HC, but If I had to choose between the two, the lesser of the evils is Haz. Morris didn't fare very well in Tampa as HC, and there are way too many reports of the country club atmosphere and discipline problems with players during his run. Haz strikes me as a more hard nosed coach. Last thing we need now are the inmates running the asylum.

Go Deep, I don't think many Redskins fans know very much about Morris. I do. I live in Orlando, and he was widely considered to be a total joke. When he was fired and his replacement came in, the leaders on the team similar to our own London Fletcher, all spoke up about the immediate improvement.

Now due to distance, I don't expect many Redskins fans to know about his past, but this is the kind of crap you'd read in the paper every weekend, and see the local sports anchor talk about. I'm not shocked that it isn't in Larry Michael's talking points:

I haven't heard any official word that the Redskins are interested in Gruden - but I would love to see them interview him. I think he could do wonders for Griffin and I'm guessing he's hungry to show his brother isn't the only head coaching talent in the family.

Cincy is in the playoffs, I dont think were even allowed to mention his name while he's involved with a team who's season hasn't concluded.. it would be considered collusion.

But does Jay make all the stupid faces Chucky does?

I could dig that hire and think if we get a color commentators family member we're less likely to get job'd on penalties.

He's something else. He's known for being the first at work in the morning, and the last to leave. He wins everywhere he goes. He has what seems like an endless amount of energy. He's extremely intelligent. I've seen him up close, and in probably over 200 interviews.

He's not a douchebag. He has no syndromes. His practices are brutal, and players get in line quickly. He knows a lot about the QB position, and he specializes in walking into train wreck situations, and building winners. Cincy has been a loser for decades. Now they're division champs, and the third seed in the entire AFC.

This is it. He possesses what everyone here says that they are looking for. He's a Harbaugh. He reminds me of a modern day Joe Gibbs. He knows how to deal with bad owners. This guy leads men.
