The Legend
Shanahan had control over personnel decisions. It was in his contract. That's why he was also Team Executive VP as well as Head Coach.
It seems based on the anecdotes from his last years in Denver and his time here in Washington that Shanahan used the staff and his own judgment to make personnel decisions, largely ignoring the advice and evaluations of scouts and front office people that were paid for the team to work on personnel 24/7.
I don't know why there is such a witch hunt for others to blame.
And the talk about fast transitions and a lack of patience?
I think 4 years and a 24-40 record shows some patience.
The Cleveland coach was gone in one season, a season in which the team traded its top pick from the previous year, Trent Richardson, mid-season. Talk about being set up to fail.
How about Lovie Smith being fired after 10-6? Trestman comes in and goes 8-8 and the team has come out and said his job is safe.
What standards are they using to judge performance?
I think the Redskins were patient with Shanahan, we all were.
Through all of his self-righteous blather about running a franchise and team the right way, to his possum-like expression at press conferences after losses in which he never seemed to be able to find any tangible answers for a team in free fall.
Remember his press conference where he chided reporters about knowing quarterbacks, and putting his reputation on the line for John Beck?
There are a lot of coaching jobs where a statement like that followed by the abysmal quarterbacking in 2011 would have lead to his dismissal BEFORE 2012 and the chance to trade picks for Griffin, etc.
