2014 Coaching Search Rumors

... the hope is that a new coach comes in that knows how to teach him not only to deploy his prodigious talents as a real NFL QB, but how to conduct himself as someone in the spotlight who...while he is riding high...can influence people and outcomes.
Icarus...

The question posed was 'is Griffin a coach killer?' That's what I responded to. Had the question been 'has Griffin played a role in the teams lack of success?' My response would've mirrored some of the points you made. Saying Griffin needs to grow up, smarten up, etc... Is one thing. Saying he deliberately sabotaged Shanahan and actively worked towards getting him fired (as a 'coach killer' would seemingly do) is another.

I really didn't hear numerous press conferences where he took shots at the coaching staff? Other than the one instance where he talked about the opposing D 'knowing what was coming' (and I think whether that was really intended as a 'shot' is highly debatable), I don't know of other instances. Maybe I just missed that. I also think that the several occasions where he had follow-up press sessions to 'clarify' comments were indications that it was important to him that folks not get the impression he was criticizing coaching decisions. I guess you could look at that cynically and say he was just trying to cover his own rep but I saw it as just evidence he is a young guy still who isn't always artful in what he says, didn't realize to what extent every word he says is going to be parsed and dissected, and was often clumsy in choosing his words.

I don't think so. Griffin earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in amazingly compressed timeframe - and he can't master the simplicities of managing the media after a few trial and errors? maybe one or two screw ups.....but not what we have seen. what's the first thing he did after being drafted? he made a beeline for the talk shows and sponsors. he handled that quite well. he knows the gig and understands how to play the media. we can't have it both ways - we can't say we have an unusually bright young man and then claim naiveté when he messes up. inconsistent themes.

Griffin, IMO, has elements of "me first" (as I have noted elsewhere) that he needs to grow out of.

It's difficult to say the $36 million hit did NOT impact the team.

To think otherwise is ridiculous.

exactly. hazlett did the math in a presser last week and equated the hit to about 10 players....maybe more.

the question was whether Griffin gets a reputation as a coach killer. totally different thing being asked.

disagree. they have ben playing reasonably hard - they just don't have the talent on the roster to compete with the better teams.

There's room to blame all parties involved for sure. This late in the season though the missed blocks, tackles, dropped balls, etc are 100% on players effort IMHO. Or lack of

The redskins are saying they haven't fired staff.

It's not stupid to keep them, for now. The players have to report to someone and day to day operations have to continue to function for a few more days (before everyone leaves.) So they have to stay on for at least the morning today to finish check ins, turning in of playbooks, etc.

The right thing to do was to remove Shanahan from position of power, bring in a GM (or promote from within) to start a coaching staff. Pick a coach. Then let him make decisions about his coaching staff (maybe he'll keep some, maybe not, let him decide)

It could also be Snyder giving them an FU by keeping them under contact as long as possible to hurt their chances of getting a job elsewhere.

It's unfortunate that I'm not sure what the actual reasoning is. I'm inclined to think Snyder is taking the petty route rather than the smart one.

Actually by letting them go now they would have a better time getting a job as you said, which would offset what he owes them or he would get some money back as salaries from new job openings offset with previous jobs. Most of the time the new coach will decide if he wants to keep the current staff. We have a few staff members that may be good to keep.

Bobby Turner RB
Sean McVey TE
Raheem Morris DB (our cb have done pretty well, especially Hall and Amerson is developing nicely)
Chris Foerester (depending on scheme)

I keep hearing this and the retort is still the same...10 players? Who would be choosing those players? The same person who chose Larry Johnson, McNabb, Otogwe, LeRiebus, Jarvis Jenkins, and the creme de le creme...Josh Morgan and Fred Davis! The last two names on that list rival any bad signing this team ever made. Davis got 7 million over 2 years and played a total of...6 games? That is 7 million wasted on 1 player when we have such little resources.

Multiple 'security' personnel watched Mike Shanahan's car with walkie-talkies like make-believe Secret Service agents.

It was black smoke and that means a firing. White smoke is a hiring. Or something like that.

True, but meant now we wait for news of a new coach. Do you have a feeling on how quickly one will be in place? Also, what is Allen's fate?

you don't need stars for STs. and how could they do worse than what they have?

as for he others. some misses...but they couldn't compete for the quality guys precisely because they didn't have the money. they had some home runs as well. welcome the NFL and the guessing game that is personnel. you're not going to win at it if you have to depend on hitting it out of the ballpark with 4th to 7th round picks and mid-tier, limited FA signings.

I know as much as anyone else here. All of it is speculation. It will be fun to try and track Redskins One and see who will be first to post the news of a new HC.

But Al, the mismanagement of the money we did have suggests a poor ability to get better players. Just look at his overall body of work which includes going back to his days as the VP in Denver. Bowlen and he are said to be very good friends...Bowlen fired his very good friend because he would not relinquish control and he was not so good at building a team.

Shanahan GM is poor and no amount of money was going to change that.

I hope that little chill that just went up my spine upon finding out that Tampa Bay has fired Greg Schiano and Mark Dominick was just a resukt of not having had breakfast yet.
