While that was a majority of what he talked about in his exit presser, it is amusing the ease with which people write off losing 16 million in cap space over two years. As if it doesn't matter or something.

Well yes, but the alternative was letting it be tied up in haynesworth and hall's contracts.

the cap penalty didn't just magically appear out of thin air. they were the end state of ridiculous contracts given to hall and haynesworth; given by cerrato and snyder.

The redskins are saying they haven't fired staff.

It's not stupid to keep them, for now. The players have to report to someone and day to day operations have to continue to function for a few more days (before everyone leaves.) So they have to stay on for at least the morning today to finish check ins, turning in of playbooks, etc.

The right thing to do was to remove Shanahan from position of power, bring in a GM (or promote from within) to start a coaching staff. Pick a coach. Then let him make decisions about his coaching staff (maybe he'll keep some, maybe not, let him decide)

It could also be Snyder giving them an FU by keeping them under contact as long as possible to hurt their chances of getting a job elsewhere.

It's unfortunate that I'm not sure what the actual reasoning is. I'm inclined to think Snyder is taking the petty route rather than the smart one.

Not so different than how history has been re-written on Marty Schottenheimer's time in DC. To hear tell these days, St. Marty had turned around the Redskins and had them on the verge of contending on a regular basis again. What has been lost to the fog of revisionism is how the team largely hated the man; and how, after 0-5 became 5-5, the final 6 games, where the games actually mattered, were a study in mistakes and lost opportunities, and how awful a GM he was appearing to be (Sage Rosenfels, anyone?). Should he have been given another year or two? Yes. Was there any REAL indication he was the candle in the dark the media and many fans have retroactively decided he was? Nope.

But, given the way he assembled a dominant force in San Diego, immediately after he left here gives us a glimpse of what was probable here. No, it wasn't "great" the first year, but we watched him leave here and build one of the best teams in the NFL out west.

disagree - in a major way.

just to be clear on this: I have been a big RGIII advocate from day 1...still am. but anyone who denies what happened from the end of last season forward is masking reality. there were two parties to the Griffin/Shanahan dynamic. You expected Shanahan to be the adult. fair enough. I expected Griffin to keep his friggin mouth shut and focus on the essentials - including learning how to lead and set the example. there are elements of his character that ring of "me first". to a far lesser degree than Arrington....RGIII nevertheless reminds me of some of the same behavior patterns: most especially the play for money and attention early on. don't kid yourself for a moment that RGIII (with influence from his Dad) hasn't looked at his career from a business as well as team/performance point-of-view. Griffin has a role in all of this....and it isn't covered with glory. the hope is that a new coach comes in that knows how to teach him not only to deploy his prodigious talents as a real NFL QB, but how to conduct himself as someone in the spotlight who...while he is riding high...can influence people and outcomes.

Shanahan had a major hand in his demise. but, once again, there were all sorts of external complicating factors that made the situation exceedingly complex. we've run through all of this in past threads. IMO, he took a bad situation and made it better. his hubris got the better of him and he is on a train outta town. see ya. but I can see reality for what it is. this debacle has more than one root cause.
