2014 Coaching Search Rumors

Whizzy won't come here. Detroit has never won anything, if he goes up there and gets the Lions to 12-4 they will erect a monument in his honor.

I agree - but I think if we are to take Bruce at his word (which may not always be great, because I think he is definitely a politician in ways - which will hopefully be largely be good for the Redskins) - they are also specifically looking for someone who has a vision for how to get the Redskins where they want to be. A vision that has a notion of a timeline.

One thing that I thought was very telling in Bruce's press conference was that he specifically said that time was valuable. I think now that they have cleared some of the broken salary stuff off, and they are writing better contracts... if they evaluate talent effectively and continue to write better contracts, if they draft more players (which generally leads to more favorable cost/benefit), they can turn things around fairly quickly. I think they know they can turn around quickly (although I don't think the comparisons with the Chiefs are completely fair, I think our defense is in worse shape than theirs was, and our offense may be slightly better).

As I've said before, this is definitely going to be one of the more interesting offseasons. With no Cerrato, I don't feel that failure is a guarantee. With Snyder, I don't feel long-term, sustained success is highly probable. But, I do feel that hope for marked improvement is still on the table.

nice post.

vis the Chiefs...you're right. the six all-Pros Reid inherited were staffed over the course of several drafts.

Gibbs did not bad mouth Williams, but what he did not do was endorse him to Snyder despite being his DC and Asst Head Coach for 4 years.

That is strange to me.

When Dungy left Indy his Asst Head Coach got his endorsement and was hired.

If a coach leaves on good terms it is a bit odd that his previous staff pick gets jettisoned.

Williams was the anti- Gibbs. He was/is an eff-bombing machine, was instructing his players to hurt opposing players, and had a pretty arrogant persona. That's about as diametrically opposite a God-fearing, mild-mannered Joe Gibbs as possible. I suspect some of Williams tendencies and general style didn't suit Gibbs preferences when it came down to it.

hmmmm.....Whisenhunt....Gruden....Bevel....Zimmer......Fangio.....

sounds like we will find a capable coach regardless.

I also think Williams likely made it clear that if he ever got the job he wasn't going to let Dan Snyder tell him how to coach. I don't have any inside info to support that, but I got to see a lot of Williams when covering for ES including Brian Murphy and having a 30 minute 1 on 1 with him, and he just isn't a diplomatic 'mince words' kind of a guy.

I remember Gibbs leaving because his grandson was VERY sick. It doesn't seem like him to speak negatively about anyone. And with all the things that were just piling up on him I thought he just felt the need to make a clean break.

That's why he SAID he was leaving but I've never fully bought that. I felt then and still do that Gibbs took a good look around at that time, with an aging group of players and an owner who he could co-exist with but likely didn't have a lot of regard for, figured he'd done as much as he could do in the 2nd go-round, and decided he could spend his time better elsewhere.

Like Jay Gruden, sort of?

Just wondering.

that and the whole Sean Taylor series of events drained him.

Yeah, there are probably similarities, but the difference is Allen makes the decisions now, not Snyder, right? I agree with Bulldog, it was idiotic to let Gregg Williams go in favor of 'slip and slide'. The only possible positive from that move was that at least the Redskins escaped bounty-gate liability.

It appears that Gruden is the frontrunner:

Update, 8:50 a.m.: One person familiar with the matter said there is sentiment that Gruden has emerged as the front-runner for the Redskins’ coaching job.
“I think he’s their first choice,” the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the team’s or Gruden’s behalf.
But even if that is the case, it does not ensure that Gruden and the Redskins will strike a deal. Gruden has other opportunities and could proceed to his scheduled interview Thursday with the Vikings. Another person with knowledge of the matter did not rule out Gruden being hired by the Redskins but cautioned that both sides might be inclined to complete the interviewing process.

Jay Gruden?s formal interview with Redskins follows dinner Tuesday night with Bruce Allen [updated]

I had forgotten about the Jay Gruden - Jim Haslett connection. Have to wonder if that wasn't the reason Snyder/Allen didn't send him packing with the other coaches?

Erg.

I'm okay with the idea of Jay Gruden, as fully vetted by Bruce Allen & Co.

But the notion of keeping Jim Haslett on as DC puts a pit in my gut.

I hope they get a shot at interviewing Whisenhunt. Something about him I just like. For my lightly informed opinion he and Gruden are my favorites.

I think most feel that way. I may be reading tea leaves that aren't there. I've just never understood how he sticks around under any circumstances unless you buy the kind of silly idea that Shanahan was overriding his calls frequently...

One thing, though, Gruden worked under Haz with the Tuskers-this time it would be the other way around.

Bit of a difference there, I would think. This also ties in with my thought that they may be simply allowing the new HC to have the "normal" amount of discretionary power on selecting his own support staff-Kyle was leaving of his own accord anyway.

Yeah, I know - I had in mind Gruden might have a bind with him or feel a sense of gratitude. Not to mention Haslett is lucky to have a potential job as a coordinator in most peoples opinions so he would likely be grateful for a chance to work for a former subordinate. Or it could be the 2nd possibility. They are really screwing over Haslett if he doesn't get the nod though - he may miss out on other potential gigs as a result (unless they've told him he can interview elsewhere in the meantime).

I just can't believe they could end up keeping Haslett - that would really be a mind-boggler to me???

I dont see how it could happen, unless he's part of the draw for the next headcoach.

I think the staff that wasn't tied to Shanahan at the hip was retained so they could do end of the year items. Probably also to be as professional about it as possible. I'm willing to bet they're being allowed to entertain job offers elsewhere if they're being asked...

If Haslett is kept then to me that says Mike Shanahan was running the defense and telling Haslett what to do. If that's the case then I'm ok with him getting a shot at running the defense himself.

He has connections with all of the coaches they've yet to fire.
