2014 Coaching Search Rumors

I dont see how it could happen, unless he's part of the draw for the next headcoach.

The cynical side of me always thought that Hasslet was kept around so that if they couldn't find a coach to take the job, they had him to give it to. l don't think that or want that, but that cynical part in me wonders that.

I just can't believe they could end up keeping Haslett - that would really be a mind-boggler to me???

We all hate Haslett. With that said, keep in mind that he wasn't allowed to pick his own assistants. Bob Slowik was forced on him, and possibly Raheem too.

He also had no experience with a 3-4 before.

So he was asked to run an unfamiliar scheme, with people that weren't his choices.

They are really screwing over Haslett if he doesn't get the nod though - he may miss out on other potential gigs as a result (unless they've told him he can interview elsewhere in the meantime).

He can leave if he wants. He'll be leaving 1.9 million (? maybe a bit off on this, my recollection from the radio) on the table, but that would be his choice. Otherwise, the Skins just voluntarily forfeit the $. Maybe they see a possibility that a coach would want to retain him.

I think there is "an" argument for what they are doing (See above). However, I also do not like Haslett. I think his comments on Orakpo were not constructive. I don't like his coaching history. I don't like some of what I see in his attitude - but that's through what window I have. So yeah, I don't like him... but I do see an organizational/club argument for their actions. The players seem to like him for some reason, apparently, according to reports. Maybe because of things like his comments about Orakpo, which only help Orakpo's negotiations at the expense of the club (in my eyes).

I had forgotten about the Jay Gruden - Jim Haslett connection. Have to wonder if that wasn't the reason Snyder/Allen didn't send him packing with the other coaches?

I just saw the article, and was thinking the same thing. I'd give Haz a season if we switch back to the 43.:uhoh: With a few new additions, we could be in the top 10 next season running a 43.

Here's a great article from the Post, that details Jay Gruden's ties to each of the coaches left on our roster.

Coincidence? I don't think so. Reason, or clue #323 that Gruden has always been our top pick.

Also, the Post may not love the Redskins, but even they can't discount his success:

Redskins coaching search: Jay Gruden by the numbers

yeah as much as i dont want to see it, i guess having a safety net like that in place is a sign that this organization is not going to let themselves get handcuffed again like they did with Zorn. Granted that's taking the silver lining out of it.

Mort reporting that the Redskins will not interview Franklin.

Is that it? Or is anyone else scheduled to come in?

I thought we had requested to interview Zimmer,Whisenhunt,Roman and Fangio too?

Franklin rumored to be the next PSU coach. Couple media guys say not to dismiss Jim Caldwell as a strong possibility. God - please don't let that be true...

Franklin would not be a good choice here. Maryland OC and coach at Vandy I don't think puts him in position to take on this kind of responsibility.

That is like a AAA manager from San Diego being hired to manage the Yankees. Too much pressure and too many strong personalities.

Haslett has had minimal talent to work with at several key positions on defense consistently over 4 years and yet fans think he is the bum?

Come on, the blame goes on Shanahan whose picks for that side of the ball both in the draft and free agency were uneven and who as it turns out is the one that called the zero blitz in the Cowboys game that allowed Dez Bryant to beat Washington twice in 2011.

Shanny wasn't too quick to take responsibility for overruling his coordinator and watching his decisions go down in flames.

This defense needs an overhaul.

Hopefully the next coach if he is an offensive guru, will hire a DC and let him work with Allen to bring in talent to fit the chosen scheme.

Shanahan had too much power and was picking defensive ends and cornerbacks.

His skill had always been in developing quarterbacks and offensive systems.

Another example of a guy wearing too many hats.

Come on Bulldog - no NFL coordinator gets or should get that kind of a pass over a 4 year period. Lots of coordinators on both sides of the ball have limitations, challenges, and barriers. The guy lead the defense down a downward spiral. He was an NFL defensive coordinator for 4 years - not a helpless victim. So Haslett had no input into who we drafted or picked up in free agency huh? How would anyone know that? And there may have been some plays here and there where Shanahan overrode a Haslett decision (I'm not sure I even have a problem with that in a key situation even if true) - but there's no evidence that was epidemic or even commonplace. You've stated a number of times that folks need to stop making excuses for Shanahan - seems like that should apply to others whose performance has been sub-par, like Jim Haslett's. It's a performance-based business and Haslett has earned no benefit of the doubt for me.

but not so if they are super alpha male? I fail to see how that changes the due diligence requirements for hiring any coach. one would think being thorough in all instances would be a priority. different strokes I guess.

Clearly mixed reactions to the "quiet" aspect. In the context of the article, Fangio came across as a man of few words who is a gifted and meticulous gameplanner and who has his players prepared and motivated and whose defense thus consistently performs at a high level even while the offense is uneven at times. He apparently backs his players and provides positive reinforcement which earns their trust and earns him their respect. That coupled with the "smart" reference reminded me of Gibbs. The guy seems to have substance which I will take over sizzle any day. I guess I'm just not a fan of Bill Parcells "louder" style of coaching.

what difference would it make? If Gruden wanted him - and Allen made clear the next coach decides his staff - he'd go after him anyway.

not a big Haz backer myself.....but in this context...I don't see a big difference.

Sounds like the deal to get JG1 is being worked on by the Redskins and agent late into the evening.

JG1 - are you talking about Jay Gruden, Jon Gruden, or someone else?

Jay. Tim Brant via Ch. 7 in DC is reporting this news. Could be a false alarm or the real thing.

Step away from Twitter for 2 hours and it blows up :) Supposed friend of Jay's son posted he's been offered and accepted the job. Since removed. People spazzing. Gotta love Twitter.

That is why I went with the local report and not twitter. I watched it too, but wanted something a little more concrete. White smoke is possible sometime tomorrow.
