I don't like us 'holding onto' Jim Haslett either, because it sends a message to the new HC that we think he should be retained.

Its the only name I've heard, other than Bill O'Brien (who already got a job) and Art Briles (who has said he is staying put). I wish they'd take a look at Sumlin.
There is a rumor out there they might be interested in Notre Dame's Brian Kelly but I haven't seen anything solid on that.
Things we know. Allen worked for Shanahan. They were not equal partners. Shanahan had final say on personnel decisions for the team, the coaches, and the front office. This was made clear at his first press conference. He OWNED the football side of the organization.
With that in mind what would have liked Allen to do to stop him? Why should I assign Allen the blame for anything the last 4 years?

Mike McCoy was essentially a Jim Zorn last year...and he has his team past the Wild Card round after winning on the road against a team he lost to in the regular season. Pretty impressive, and just goes to show how hard it is to predict these things. Would McCoy have done as well in Washington with Snyder? I doubt it, but who knows?

Haslett is under contract for something like 1.9 million... so if they let him go, I think they again still owe him 1.9 mill. What if the new coach does want to keep Has, or doesn't care?
Also, here is another thing to consider: it's been reported than Shanahan basically forced the 3-4 on Has. If that's the case, maybe Has would have fared better employing a 4-3. It's hard to say. Personally, I'd rather cut bait with Has. On the radio, Cooley said that given his existing contract and that if you just fire him, he'd get picked up in a heartbeat by another team, it would be foolish to fire him right now. Let the new coach make that decision with Has still under contract; no problem for the Redskins to do so (they don't lose anything).

Neo, what I find funny here is that people are defaulting to an either/or-"none" versus "all" position on responsibility. I mentioned in an earlier post that organizational charts quite often don't match the actual distribution of authority and responsibility and the lack of verifiable information about the actual arrangement betwen Snyder, Shanahan and Allen makes it impossible to know with accuracy on whose desk the "The Buck Stops Here" sign sits depending on what aspect of things we're talking about. I would rephrase the question "To what extent can we place the burden of responsibility on so-and-so's plate?"-the answer to which, again, cannot be determined with accuracy due to lack of information.
It is a normal human tendency to create models-in this case a job title or block in an organizational chart with connecting lines meant to convey CoC information entailing responsibility for and use that model as a basis for drawing conclusions. In both my experience and observation the blurriness of the box edges and connecting lines-especially in the Redskins FO case here-makes that, in my judgement, a mistake.

Haslett ran a 4-3 defense at almost every other stop in his long, horrible career as a DC. The guy just flat out can't coach, he never has been a winner anywhere running any scheme.

It took Peyton almost 10 years to win a superbowl; its not something that happens overnight. There's a lot of pressure being an NFL QB; and Dalton is nowhere near Peyton's level. Just making the playoffs 3 years in a row is damn impressive.

I don't really think he's a turd. A ginger? Definitely. He's just not the physically gifted QB like a lot of other NFL starters. He pretty much single-handedly destroyed the Bengals chances to compete in that game. Fumbling with zero contact in a playoff game? That's just sad. I'm pretty sure that's not how Gruden drew it up.

Yeah - I'm aware of his past. I think since he's under contract and there is some contention that I've heard that he'd be picked up quickly, there isn't any real loss in keeping him for now. You just lose that contract money regardless, why not see if the new coach wants to retain him. Yes, I am also not a believer in Haslett, 4-3 or 3-4. Unfortunately, the reports are that Shanahan forced Haslett into employing a 3-4. It seems possible (even likely) that Haslett is telling the powers-that-be that if he was able to use a 4-3 he'd have been better off. That is just my guess; if he stays on, I'd assume the Skins will be switching back to 4-3 (again, pure conjecture).
Regardless of all that guesswork, his contract is still in place, and it's 1.9 million (or thereabouts). So, I think they probably just want to keep him around and see if that really is throw away money or not. I do hope that it is throw away money. I too don't like Haslett.

That is just asinine. Don't SAY things like that. All you are doing is helping bad things happen:
- Orakpo stays with Skins for an exorbitant contract.
- Orakpo thinks his value is really high, leaves Skins because they are unwilling to pay. Orakpo uses this kind of quote as justification.
I just don't see the great value in saying things like that to the media, other than I guess getting the players on your side so they'll ante up for you if asked by management "what do you think about this coach? Should we keep him?" which would of course be purely selfish. I don't see the value to the team of saying that, certainly.
