It was nice to see one of those plays coming from another team. I felt bad for Dalton for a second, but I was also laughing aloud.

Saw a reference to that earlier today on nfl.com, I think it's what they refer to there. You know, Jon and Bruce are probably friends from Raiders days. I hope this was a fair evaluation process. Or, alternatively, I'll take unfair evaluation process but works out anyway. I told some friends when Shanahan was due to be fired, "don't be surprised if Jay Gruden is the guy they target." It was just a thought because I had the feeling that they were enamored with Jon Gruden, and that Jon Gruden wasn't going to come back to coaching. It just feels very "2000s Redskins" to then get Jay Gruden. As I've said before - I will be very interested in the contract details of whomever they end up hiring.

Cincy's offense, and defense for that matter, both blew yesterday. But seriously, 1 game out of 17 is really not anything to judge on. This is however:
Andy Dalton ranked 7th this season in passing yards. 7th! That's insane.
He finished above QBs like Romo, Andrew Luck, Cam and Wilson. And he was almost the worst in the entire league in interceptions! Think about that for a second.
4,300 yards! RG3 had 3,200 yards in his first season.
Do you know how good the play calling has to be, how well-coached the WRs have to be, and how much work has to be done to get Andy Dalton to 4,300 yards?
That's impressive. Now imagine if he gets a real QB.

Look, I can't evaluate every game of the year because I did not watch all of every game. But with Redzone, I was able to see a lot of Cincy and Dalton. Dalton is better than his performance yesterday and he is better than you give him credit for. Cincy's offense was not ever something that stood out, at all. Their defense is the reason they were in the playoffs with the offense being just good enough.

I've watched every Cincy game for the last two years. For FF purposes.
I've seen at least 20 of his AFL games live, and probably another 25 on TV. His long line of success can be summed up in one sentence.
He has a history of going to the cheapest teams (Orlando) with the worst owners (Cincy and Orlando) and gets the best out of everyone in his offense.

This is why it's pointless to even discuss any of this right now. Seriously Brian, you're going to hate on the guy based on one game? You're really going to do that?
The Bengals offense in 2013 was 6th ranked in points, 10th ranked in yardage. That's better than the Seahawks, 49ers, Saints, Packers, Lions...need I go on - that's in 'pretty damn good' territory.
I like Gruden. I like the look on the players faces when he was talking to them in that clip. Because they are listening, they know he's right, and it's written all over their faces. He was actually getting ON Dalton in that clip - he made the comment that Dalton never mishandles a snap and had done it 3 times in the pre-season. I get the feeling there ARE no star players for him. I like his aggressive personality, and I like his fire. You're not going to see him on the sidelines with pursed lips, you're going to see him lighting players up. If someone wants to give some legitimate reasons why he'd be a poor choice, I'm all ears. But don't point to one game and tell me it means something.

I was trying to fall asleep last night and was suddenly wandering why Vic Fangio hadn't been linked to any head coaching openings. I had been looking at Jim Tomsula and Ed Donatell as potential DC candidates and then it occurred to me that their boss make might a good head coach candidate. I saw on some forum where SF fans were indifferent or even happy about a potential Roman departure so long as Fangio stayed. Fangio is 55 which might be seen as a negative, but otherwise he has played a part in building a stout, physical defense in SF from the DL out.
