Interesting Om, I think a lot of Terps' Nation was thinking that with Ralph. I would wager they are not as happy to see him go now.
 
Short term, there will probably be pain when Beamer finally retires. It will largely depend on who they bring in (or if they annoint Bud Foster as has been the thinking for years), and what talent is in the pipeline. I'd like to think the program is established enough now where they can at least attract a young hotshot who has maxed out at a "smaller" school and is ready to hit the big time...but who knows.

All I'm really saying at this point is that as long as Frank remains in charge, what you've seen from VT for the past few years is what you're going to get. Good enough to stay in the Top 20, to win their non-conference games most of the time, to look good enough on and off during any given year to get into the BCS conversation, and occasionally grab an ACC-tied Orange Bowl berth.

Once there, they might even win one once in while, like they did over Cincinnati in 2009. Or, more Hokie-ish, get plowed over there like they did last year against Luck and Stanford.

But they'll never win a title under Frank. They're just not big or current enough schematically. Those are tenets his philosophy doesn't encompass.

Virginia Tech....just good enough to break your Hokie heart.

After 5 weeks, here are few things we've learned:

Clemson just might be for real. Speed kills!

If LSU beats Alabama, they will win the whole shebang. They are THAT good, and Honey Badger is ridiculous. He will be the number one overall pick in the April 2013 draft.

Florida State was ridiculously overrated. Wake Forest? My goodness. They should just do away with preseason rankings altogether.

UF was not as good as advertised - they were simply outclassed by LSU - they did not have Brantley, but I'm not sure it would have made a huge difference. The LSU defense is just too good.

Wisky looks good also, as do Stanford and OK State. There is an excellent chance of 4 to 5 teams finishing the year undefeated. Wisconsin, LSU/Alabama, Oklahoma/OKSt, Stanford & Clemson could all finish undefeated (not even mentioning Boise State), giving rise to the most controversial bowl season ever. Let's all hope for this outcome, because it would mean more pressure than ever for a playoff.
 
This week is the first time since Dec. 6, 1982 that a school from the state of Florida wasn't in the Associated Press poll, a stretch of 472 weeks.

FSU may be the most disappointing team I can remember. From preseason #5 to gone in a few short weeks. Maybe they can get it together and challenge Duke this week. I have to believe that many of their 4 and 5 star verbal commits are second-guessing those decisions right now. It looks like Mario Edwards Jr., who's father played for the Seminoles in the glory years, is now leaning toward Oklahoma.
 
Wisconsin has only played one real game this season, so I would wait to judge them. I also think Michigan is frauding.

Well, the Big 10-leven is weak all around, so Wisky could be undefeated without ever playing a "difficult" game. :)
 
LSU showing why they're so dangerous. Routing Auburn without the best player in the country, or standout RB Spencer Ware (perfect one-cut guy, I predict he's drafted by the Shanahans in 2 years). Geaux, Tigers!

I was watching the LSU game for a while, they're ridiculous. That defense is absurd.
 
Damn LSU looks good, but Les Miles will find a way to blow it.

I'm not trying to take away from him, he won the National Championship back in 07 so he is capable and there is a helluva lot of talent on that team, a lot. They look like a team that can run the table, but it is Les Miles! :laugh:

Very absurd, and that was without the honeybadger Tyrann Mathieu. If he was a junior or senior, I bet he'd be a Heisman finalist. As it is, they're gonna be hard pressed to ignore him when it comes time to vote.

I don't understand the love for LSU's defense more than Alabama. Alabama is holding teams to fewer yards and fewer points. The only stat LSU ranks higher that may be more significant is the turnover ratio.
 
Some news from my neck of the woods

Dominique Davis, QB for East Carolina U. broke a record set by Tee Martin of Tennessee and tied by, interestingly enough, Aaron Rodgers while he was at California for most consecutive completions in a single game. The previous record had been 23. Davis was 26 for 26 in the first half of the game against Navy which ECU won 38-35. He had previously completed his last 10 passes in a game against Memphis so the record now stands at 36 consecutive completions total which is also a record His totals for the Navy game was 40-45 for 372 yards and 2 TDs.-a completion percentage of 88.9%. No INTs by the way either.

Davis' stats for the season prior to the Navy game-over the first six games-were 174 completions for 254 attempts, 1641 yards, a 68.5% completion percentage, 12 TDs and 10 INTs and a QBR of 130.5 which is calculated differently in the NCAA than in the NFL.

I certainly hope the game lives up to the hype. I predict a 6-3 type of game with those defenses, until the LSU defense takes one to the house. LSU wins 13-6.

Pretty damned close, Lanky, good call. Hell of a defensive battle. I have to say, I thought overall, Bama's defense looked better to me, but LSU made some big plays. Can't believe Bama missed 4 FGs either, actually feel badly for that kid. That's a long walk back home.
 
Exactly the kind of game I expected. But I couldn't figure out why Bama didn't run more. Can't throw a game-changing INT while pounding the rock.

And yeah, poor kid had the shanks last night. The OT kick was inaccurate w/ not enough leg!
