Oh, he most definitely was. Especially him and Darrell Waltrip from 1985-1988.

They lobbied the sport to do something about Bill Elliott at the Super Speedways.

The running joke back then was : Did you hear about Earnhardt and Waltrip being arrested for breaking and entering?

They broke into a Ford dealership to see what the front end of a red Thunderbird looked like.

I still remember the witch hunt they got started in 85. NASCAR changed the rules 4 times in one week before the Charlotte race, trying to bust Elliott.

Earnhardt at the time said "Show me a Ford that runs like #9 and I'll buy it"

The man could dish it out but definitely couldn't take it.

I literally despised the way he raced, which was "My car may not be faster than yours but if I can somehow get near you, I'll take you out."

Waltrip and Earnhardt both campaigned to slow the cars down.

Now look at Daytona and Dega. The racing there is flat out ruined.

Umm how old are you?

I remember Sr and Waltrip complaining until NASCAR allowed them to put the "bubble" back glass on the monte carlos because they thought that would help them vs the thunderbirds...even though you couldn't buy a car like that.

Sr. complained alot.

I remember one season, Sr had like 6-7 wins and Davey Allison had been in a long dry spell. Allison finally wins a race(which was rare for a ford that year) and in the post race interview, Earnhardt was complaining "well, he ought to win. NASCARs gave them everything."
It blew up pretty good cause even Davey was shooting back "I've congratulated him all year whenever he's won and I win one race and he starts slamming my team.."

That was when racing was fun.

It's so sad to see how the sport has went downhill.

Mike, I don't follow NASCAR like you do so I rarely chime in unless I have a question or am offering some info I had read somewhere.

I know you are an Earnhardt fan and in his latter years, I rooted for him occasionally to at least win Daytona.

But I was a fan through the 80's and I remember Earnhardt being the bad guy in NASCAR.

he had the mystique of being the man in black but he was not a bad guy. not even close.

and the term "rubbin is racin" came along way before he got in the 3 car.

His off track persona was different than his on track persona.
I think you're confusing the two.

In the 80's,more fans showed up to either watch him lose or hope HE was the one who got knocked out early.

You know what I mean. I'd never compare the two and say they're equals, not by any stretch. But it's easier to stomach your own guy dumping someone than it is to stomach getting dumped.

Honestly though, Kyle's probably the closest thing to Sr. right now as a pure wheelman; as much as I despise him.

Congrats to Trevor Bayne for turning left way better than anyone else!

Late in the race I told my son it would be great to see Bayne win. To see the 21 car in Victory lane was sweet.

This was victory for the little guys. The Wood Brothers are a family run operation, which I know they get support from Roush, but a one car team from Stuarts Draft, VA wins the biggest race of the year with a 20 yr old kid.

It was also great to see Petty in Victory Lane with Leonard Wood. These two men did a lot to put the sport on the map. Petty and Pearson (in 21 car) had some great duels on the track.

This victory is something NASCAR needed. A true feel good story.

The two car hookups looked more like dancing with the stars at 200mph. Problem is guy in back couldn't see, which was a large factor in all the wrecks. Guy in front checks up or moves, then if guy in back doesn't...we have a wreck.

Jr, like many others, got a raw deal for being in wrong place at wrong time.

Not sure which method I hate worse? You got a 30 car freight train just waiting for a blown tire to cause the big one or 20 cars of twosomes wrecking each other.

There hasn't been any racing at Daytona or Talladega in 20+ years.

How would you like to race in the 500 yesterday knowing all you could do was push somebody else all day long and stare at your temp gauge?

They've basically turned four races a year into what amounts to the be 11 pm Lotto drawing. Be lucky enough to be the pushee instead of the pusher.

BB...I remember that same scene at Richmond years ago. Richard Petty was allowed to take the first chunk, which was in turn 4. I was there that day sitting in between turn 3 and 4. Man am I really dating myself.

Well, Denny is having a miserable year, Joey has yet to live up to his potential, so I am stuck rooting for Kyle! Man! I sure wish they weren't in Toyotas!

Anyway, 3rd place ain't bad in the grand scheme of things, 4th place in the standings.

Harvick's finish was amazing. I was gald to see Kyle B. passed by both. Only thing that would have made it better would have been a Ford going to Victory Lane.

Joey reminds me of Kahne. Kahne was so over hyped when he came in, they said he would be the next Jeff Gordon.... Joey is the same way, everyone thought he would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, ohh wait that was what thye used to call him! I guess he isn't sliced bread anymore!
