(New Poll) The Washington Commanders Brand 2.0: Beer Drinkers and Hail Raisers

How do you feel about the Commanders Brand 2.0?

  • Vastly improved, if this is THE brand moving forward I’m satisfied.

  • I like the direction, but I still feel more to do. I will/have specified in thread.

  • I don’t like this new direction. I didn’t like the old either. They can’t make this work for me.

I'm kind of surprised MAjor Tuddy hasn't had an overhaul.

They've been pretty clear with the spear about leaning away from the NAtive American imagery and into the Roman gladiator type imagery. And yet, Major Tuddy is still dressed like a soldier, sitting in neither camp.

They should have a halftime ceremony where someone with a spear chases Tuddy around the field and then pins him to the 50-yard line, with much squealing played over the loudspeakers, followed by free bacon for the fans. I'll bet it will get a standing ovation.

I must confess I don’t get the loathing of Tuddy from some lol. Yeah, his name is kind of dumb but I see him largely for the next generation of fans.

They should give him a Greco-Roman theme though.

Tuddy is fine, his name is slang for touchdown, and the pig is an homage to the Hogs, the greatest offensive line ever assembled.

I like the idea of dressing him like a gladiator, but putting him in a jersey is fine too.

Of all the things to hate with the new brand, the mascot isn’t high on my list. My pet peeve is how they messed up the fight song.

I thought somebody mentioned they cleaned it up a bit.

I have not been to a game since the Packers playoff loss, and gave up season tickets due to things beyond my control, so I am not certain what is being played now.

I know it was an absolute shit show rendition when little Danny was still here but I would imagine Josh and team had to have addressed a bit.

Maybe just play the music and have the fans sing what they want.

The last I heard, this classic:

Was replaced with this abomination:

The new lyrics aren’t great, especially the “fight for our Commanders” line. They also subtly changed the music for the worse. I don’t want to complain too much because I’m glad they kept the song, but they should go back to the old music and rewrite the second line to something that won’t sound so cacophonous when the crowd sings “Braves on the warpath” anyway.

So that’s the last I heard, but if anybody has an update on the status of the fight song, I would appreciate it. This song is important to me, I remember learning it in kindergarten music class in 1986-1987 right before Super Bowl XXII, my earliest memory as a fan. Also my toddler loves to sing it—though she was taught to sing a hybrid version: “Hail to the Commanders, hail victory, braves on the warpath, fight for old DC.”

Agree, fight for our Commanders just plain sucks. Not to mention, it does not make a whole lot of sense. Fight for our Commanders, so are we suggesting the team on the field is not the Commanders and as Commander PK so eloquently illustrated, the fans should be fighting in the stands for their team.

"Commanders called to battle"
"Fight for old DC"

That is just off the top of my head and not AI assisted like Maximus Baconus Crispus.

They had an alternate line “bravely march forward,” that would have been better. It needs to harmonize with the old lyrics because at least half of us still sing those. Maybe something like “bravest in combat,” or “bravely to battle,” or similar.

I recall a man-on-the-street video with JP Finlay or somebody in a DC bar the week of NFC Championship game in 2024. He tried to lead the crowd in the fight song, but all but him tripped over that line or sung the old one.

All joking aside it sounds redundant. I’m quite certain we here can come up with something that still matches the original melody but isn’t awkward. Since they originally changed the lyrics I’ve always thought that line detracts.

Stand or Rise for our Commanders works better and is less awkward.

Stand for our Commanders
Fight for old D.C.!

I would include the word brave somehow, but this would also be a big improvement. RFK Lives suggestion has too many syllables but is on the right track too. It should be an easy enough fix, rewrite the awkward line and go back to the old music. Judging by what they’ve done to improve the brand already, they might take care of this too if we could get their attention on it somehow.

I would be curious to hear how they are handling this on game day this year. Do they have the band or pipe in the music? Do they play the old tune or new one? Do they play the lyrics or just the music? Do the fans sing along, and if so which version?

I just hope our great old fight song gets the attention it deserves.
