The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

I probably watch more college than most of this board lol, I’ve seen plenty of Ohio State. Tate isn’t a WR1. Again, I’m asking when is the last time a WR in his situation has gone top 10? Let alone the first round. It doesn’t happen. And with all of the holes this team has, they don’t need to be using the 7th overall on a player who has never been asked to be a WR1 in their career. I’m not trying to get into an online fight here. Im just trying to point out that clear cut WR2s don’t go top 10. We could find a WR in the later rounds that could probably make as much of an impact as Tate. I really hope we don’t draft him and then can look at how he does on another team. Nothing about Tate is elite. Unless you’re an Ohio State fan, I can’t understand you wanting to take Tate at 7. He doesn’t show up in big games and he was matched against the CB2. Let’s see his catch ability matched up against elite CBs.

I watch plenty of college ball, go to a game or two live almost every year. But watching a game in real time and actually studying a player are different things unless you elect to mostly focus on a player or two. I did that once at an Alabama-Michigan game where I decided to watch McKinney closely and being at that game I could see what he was doing pre snap-post snap. That was revealing. But if I am just watching everything I just get glimpses of this or that player.

Heck even watching Washington, like everyone here I watch every snap, go to 3 games or so live, etc. For me to zone in i have to watch coaches tape-all 22 after if I want to expound hard on something super specific.

Heck and I am of course an amateur at it. And even coaches, the actual professionals often say they have to rewatch after the game to really have a strong sense of how this or that player played.

So yeah its cool that you watch a lot of college football, too. But I don't trust you, or myself, or anyone here to go for an evaluatiion without actually watching the player, just the player, not the whole game.

If you feel comfortable assessing players that way, that's cool, to each their own. But I trust those who actually watch closely. And they don't have to match my opinion. I wasn't sure about Bain for example but I know KDawg put in a lot of time watching him, so heck I'll at least pause before I say for sure I don't want him considering my opinion often aligns with many of his takes. But its more about I know he's not coming in with a hard opinion purely based on casual watching during the college season and narratives alone.

If I love or really don't like a player, its after diving in. Doesn't make me right or wrong, but its how I like to do it, and I know some others here do the same.

Interesting. If the rumor is true I wonder if that still happens. I am assuming this came out during medicals so he went to the combine not knowing about the injury. I had surgery to repair my meniscus, but I went about a year before getting surgery. I hurt it training for a marathon. Of course until I went to the doctors I didn't know what the injury was. Basically if I stayed off it (no running) it felt fine. So after I first got injured I took maybe two to three weeks off before starting running. And when I first starting running again and my mileage was low (like 15 miles a week) it felt fine. But as soon as I started ramping up the mileage back up to like 30 miles a week the pain came back. I imagine he knew he had some type of minor knee injury but didn't know exactly what it was.

I guess we’ll see. After searching X this is the only reference that I can find and it’s from a self-described ‘social media influencer’. So…

I don't fully disagree with your point that he is a #2 receiver in college. The only argument against that point, really, is that when the #1 is Jeremiah Smith every receiver in college would have been a #2 to him.

I think Tate is much better than you give him credit for, but I do think he is propped up from being in a premium position in a year that the high end receiver crop is fairly weak.

In 2025 he probably is one of the better options, falling somewhere between WR1-3 (I'm not counting Hunter as a WR). I think I'd have had him rated below McMillan and near Egbuka.

In 2027 he's below Smith, Marsh, Coleman. Probably slots in somewhere in the next couple slots. I think he's better than Ryan Williams. Not from a skillset/pedigree perspective. But Williams has been really odd. Williams will need a huge rebound to recover from his weird '25 where his explosiveness somehow disappeared.

Point being, that I agree with you in the hesitation that Tate is a true top 10 guy - but someone has to go top 10. This is a weak top end class.

My stance on Bailey is well known. I don't think he should be a top tier edge guy, but he's going to be.

Outside of Love, Downs, Styles, Mauigoa, Mendoza, Bain (in MY opinion), Reese, Delane, Ioane the rest of the class is iffy.

I think Tate is a round 1 talent in most drafts. Top 10 is a bit high. But someone has to go top 10. Which is why I'd be fine with him. He won't be going against 1s in the NFL right away, either. He'd be our 2 to start.

He's definitely not Jeremiah Smith, Nick Marsh, Justin Jefferson, JaMarr Chase, etc.

But he's close to McLaurin, who in my opinion went entirely too low for what he is. If there was a re-draft, Terry is a first rounder in my opinion.

Just my perspective. His tracking and traffic catch is high end and will prove useful in the NFL. Do I think he winds up being a dominant #1 in the NFL? No. But if we get him and somehow get a guy like Smith next year (if we do, it's a new coaching staff, so I don't know that this is actually a possibility) - Smith is the 1 and Tate would be the 2.

But there just aren't that many high end #1 types coming in.

Jordyn Tyson COULD be that guy but he is a walking injury.

I subscribe to the DaftonDraft substack and Cory Kinnan wrote about the rumor there. Sometimes these just end up rumors, but if I was guessing, I think this is true. Its not a serious injury, but it is probably 6 to 8 week recovery from the surgery (you can do lighter work after maybe 3 weeks)

I’m just surprised that if true that it’s not being more widely reported.

To me the simplest way to classify Tate, its been the same thing I've been saying for eons.

Lets take the 2022 draft. He's in that Olave, Drake London class IMO. 2021 Devonta Smith.

In a normal draft in that 8-14 range. He's not in that elite class. He's not a Nabers, a J. Chase.

Arguably the whole top 10 is weaker than the standard one especially at premium positions -- its not something that's exclusive to Wr.

If the idea is to help Jayden. And you are pushing J. Love for that purpose. I dig the player too and agree with the premise of helping Jayden.

Tate is a similar idea IMO. The Bears keep loading Caleb with top weapons. It's time that we do the same for Jayden.

Especially because Tate would enter the League as a 2, or even a 3… So he can get acclimated to the game before needing to go against the elite corners. Hell, there’s no reason he and Terry can’t take some slot reps.

He’s not my highest priority, if I’m being honest. But in a world where we get a FA back (Jones, Hall, Walker, etc.) and say Michael Pittman and Trey Hendrickson…

Getting Tate would be an outstanding selection for us. Even at 7.

A player’s value is where he can be potentially drafted. And I think, while admitting this class is a bit weaker, Tate is going to be drafted between 5-12.

If Smith and Marsh and Coleman were around would I feel that way? Probably not. But they aren’t. And I’m more comfortable with Tate to help Jayden in the scenario I laid out than I am Jordyn Tyson to stay healthy enough to help him or Makai Lemon to not go bobble head Bond villain.

I know I appreciate the effort KDawg and others put in to scouting these prospects.

I've spent more time on the WRs in this draft so far than any spot. And I've been thinking about what spots I've gotten right more and wrong, too over the years and why. i got some praise by some for my work dissecting TE and its cool that some remember. But I've been at my best at WR. My worst lol is Edge. So that's part of the reason why I am reluctant to come in hard on an edge when i am on the fence.

I've been better at offense than defense, especially WR and RB. With defense I've been good at safety except lol a big miss with the Seattle safety. LB mostly good. Edge -- I've had some hits but some big swings and misses. Ditto at CB.

But I was thinking where i've gone right or wrong at those spots -- as to WR, I've learned to appreciate ball tracking, body control, and soft hands more over the years. Those skills tend to track to the NFL. Lets take J. Lane, i watched a lot of his college tape, fast dude, potential to be a deep threat but you didn't see a lot of that at Virginia Tech. He was more of a screens-hitches, quick slants and go. i could extrapolate that he would be a deep threat because he made a few nice plays down the field and is fast, but you didn't see a heck of a lot of that.

I was a big Devonte Smith guy. And Tate reminds me of him in this sense. You throw the ball down field and somehow he just comes up with the ball. And it looks so effortless. you could see that with Pickens, too. I watch like you do a ton of receivers and that skill isn't a dime a dozen.

Bringing this to other players, you also don't see a ton of players who just do it all. Guys like Bernard aren't sexy watches. It isn't highlight plays. But the dude just gets open so seamlessly on the first and 2nd level and has soft hands, blocks, can run with the ball in his hands, is physical at the catch point on and on. You compare that for example to Lane, its night and day as to his floor IMO and being able in my mind to hit the ground running. And look i like Lane but you can see watching him he's raw in the context of succeeding in the NFL right away.

Give me a long armed, big handed WR who doesn't drop the ball, makes hard catches look easy, has really good body control, high points the ball well, good blocker, and can track the deep ball -- that to me adds to a high floor WR. Also workaholic-high intangibles player. Superstar? I don't know. But you don't have these obvious super stars in this draft, its not an exclusive WR drill.

If someone wants to hit Tate, I can care less about name that narrative. The reasons why he IMO isn't elite: tough to tell how well he would do with physical corners as to his releases, meh as to YAC, not much of a force on the first level, doesn't have elite traits -- not elite size or speed.

As far as Tyson goes, I like him. I don't buy a healthy version of him is the best WR in this draft, but I do think its close. But its somewhat about what flavor you like. He seperates so well on the first and 2nd level, sort of a poor man's Beckham as to double moves and wiggle in open field to get open. Why he's not elite IMO: for a dude that majors so much with underneath catches, you'd want YAC and that's not his thing, not a proven deep threat -- some questions about his past, not just injuries, but where he wasn't the same player and talked about how he wanted to play video games all day, stuff like that.

That’s true, these days.
I will never pass up an opportunity to relate something to 10,000 Maniacs and Natalie Merchant.

These are the days.

That could cause Downs to fall into the 10-15 range, but its one of those scenarios in a years time ppl will be lauding the team that drafts him.

Need to trust your med staff on this one.

And after Bain’s short arms, him and Tate are really the only two players we’ve been linked to at 7 that I want no part of. Great with everyone else. And it’s healthy to point out the strengths and weaknesses of all of these players. That’s what this forum is for.
I hope you’re wrong if we pick him, and I hope you’re right if someone else does :)
