The HC Dan Quinn Discussion Thread

It is rather interesting both Kingsbury and Johnson took demotions, essentially. However, they are on McVay's staff, so they'll be shitting rainbows this time next year. I've noticed we have a small coaching staff--McVay on the other hand has a huge one. Id think with two first time coordinators, we'd have a few more experienced voices in the room.

I was thinking about how brilliant a chess move this is from KK's standpoint. The issue he is facing is that the defense first coaches probably view his pace and the way he calls plays as a detriment to their defenses (think about all the stuff DQ complained about via his media buddies). On the other hand, the OCs getting their first HC gigs are going to want to call plays and KK would look like he has taken a major step back being the non playcalling OC for a scrub like Mike LaFleur. Being Sean's AHC for a year or two is kind of ideal for him to position himself for his next HC gig. He's not going to be criticized for playcalling and he's going to be able to tell owners and GMs that he learned from Sean and is better equipped to install elements of his offense.

For Johnson, if he can prove himself to Sean, he'll get to be the Rams OC or may get to be another team's OC in 2027 once Scheelhasse gets his HC gig somewhere. The Rams will get themselves 2 3rd round comp picks for Scheelhasse once he leaves and may get 2 for Johnson if he is the Rams OC in 2027 and gets a HC gig somewhere in 2028

I think the bottom line is, other than Joe Whitt Jr., Quinn had put together what was generally viewed as one of the most talented coaching staff’s in the NFL even boasting former coordinators and head coaches at a number of position group spots.

Why would you choose the coaching staff as your target for massive change, especially when most calmer voices are arguing it was largely a rash of injuries that derailed the 2025 season?

I don’t know that I believe Dan Quinn really knows what he is doing.

On the Johnson departure, I did not hear them say that position would be replaced - have they said that? I thought the quote I saw said they would handle it ‘internally’ which I took to mean they would spread those duties amongst other existing staff. Maybe I heard that wrong?

Counter theory: Quinn was told, “change the coordinators or you go with them.”

I don’t know that was the case - but the way this went down I can’t rule that out.

You did. Peters said that was an option, but they will look to replace Johnson internally or externally.

Highly unlikely from all verified, reliable sources. The staff is clearly Quinn's, that's been stated repeatedly.

It sure has.

I believe very little of what I hear and only half of what I see.

Point is: I’m not sure. Either way; this process is very flawed.

No offense, but I think that’s a tad naive. If there were those kinds of conversations, they would almost certainly be private with Quinn unlikely to be telling others ‘Hey guys, AP said it’s my ass or all new coordinators’.

And some things don’t have to be implicitly stated. The message can be communicated subtly and still be direct and understood.

When it's verified by reliable reporters, I tend to not try and create drama unnecessarily. There is no evidence of Peters interference with the coaching staff whatsoever.

There were also 21 offensive coordinator positions available this year (that may have been coordinator positions on both sides of the ball, I may have misheard it). After hearing Campbell say that Blough was one of the guys he wanted to bring in, and the Commanders were smart to make that move, I am okay with the "flawed process." He offered a lot of unrequired praise in that statement too. Overall, it was an insane year for openings.

You're right, it probably is naive. With all of the noise from Jayden's mom, I bet he wants to be traded too. There's no evidence of that at all, but I think it, so therefore it has to be possible.

That’s not worth a response.
Keim, Jahbvala and others have repeatedly said the staff is Quinn's. Peters has input, sure, but it's his decision. I would put Peters interfering and telling Quinn fire coordinators or he's gone is about as realistic as Jayden demanding a trade.

That’s because you want to believe that. I love Keim but he has no idea what has been said behind closed doors. I just wouldn’t be so quick to rule out that Peters may be more involved than we think.

And again, he may not have TOLD Quinn what to do, but we all as adults know that bosses tend to make sure you know what they want even when telling you ‘but it’s your decision. And most folks who want to hold onto their jobs do what their bosses want them to do.

I’m just saying it’s a possibility. Why would I want that to be the case?

Sure it's a possibility, technically, so is Daniels requesting a trade.

Probability however is much, much lower.

Alrighty. We see the world of the business of football very, very, very differently.

I’m glad you’re happy with what we’ve done and what we’ve said, though. Genuinely. I wish I could feel better about this offseason so far.

Super naive take that AP is not involved with pulling together the coaching staff. If DQ hires a bad staff and the team goes 5-12, good chance AP gets fired too.

We already have two examples of AP’s influence. KK was AP’s buddy from their Pats days 20 years ago (DQ was never in the same building as him). Wes Welker is AP’s buddy who was with him with the Pats, Broncos, Niners and now here

Riggo44 It is super obvious they use Keim to get out the narrative they need sometimes in exchange for giving him special info

When Jordan Schultz reported that Peters was behind the firings of Whitt and Kingsbury, Keim and Jhabvala both refuted that report, specifically stating that it wasn't true. So in order for Schultz report to be accurate both Keim and Jhabvala would have to have been lied to, which doesn't seem like Peters, but maybe. However, Keim in particular is known for verifying reports in triplicate before reporting information like this. Since Schultz's report, there have been no follow ups, no corroborations, no other whispers about Peters interfering, have there? Please let me know otherwise.

Part if it is what drives me crazy about sports talk radio--Willingham, Fat and Not Funny, Chris Russell get on the radio and spout out stuff to be worried about when there is no real evidence to base it on. There's plenty to be worried about with out projecting things that have been repeatedly and directly contradicted by the best, most reliable reporters out there. Like I said, sure it's possible, but the probability is extremely low.

As for the process--I'm curious what you think they should have done instead?

I never said he wasn't involved. In fact I acknowledged the complete opposite. I said it was highly unlikely he gave Quinn an ultimatum regarding the coordinators or get fired.

No offense, Rig, but I’ve gone over that about 300 times now.
