Random Commanders Thoughts

I wonder if limited FA spending is due to Harris et. al., being cash constrained.

This offseason will give us an important data point on that

More to the point, whether the ownership group is putting a constraint on cash spending (the “cash cap” that AP directly talked about before FA last offseason to lower expectations) rather than whether they are technically cash constrained. Obviously they could spend whatever they wanted, in a literal sense.

Great answer from Kirk

Not sure whether Cousins just opted to take the high road there or if those were real honest answers but certainly a lot more complimentary of Griffin than I’d have anticipated and also without any sense of bitterness about where he got drafted and how long it took for him to get his chance.

Maybe that’s the impact of having earned a gazillion dollars, lol…

Great answer from Kirk

I'll always root for Kirk and will never understand why he got so much hate from the fans here. What was his crime exactly? He wasn't a great QB who leveraged his position to maximize his earnings. And he didn't want to play for an organization owned by a man like Dan Snyder. Oh the horror!

Meanwhile Griff literally refused to run plays, acted like a diva and cost the team a ton of draft picks to turn out a bust in part because of his attitude and refusal to learn the position.

Cousins was disliked because he rejected us. And people don’t think they should be rejected ever, so the reaction is anger.

Griffin isn’t liked by a good portion of the fanbase for the reasons you noted.

Not complicated, just human psychology

I never disliked Cousins but he did look straight into the camera and lie to fans repeatedly in terms of how much he wanted to stay in Washington. I don’t begrudge him wanting to make as much $$ as possible or even wanting to be a part of a more stable and successful franchise. I just didn’t like him lying to fans about his situation.

I’ve also always felt (despite his denials in the video clip above) that he felt slighted and disrespected that he had to sit behind Griffin and that, instead of appreciating that the team drafted him even after drafting RG3 , he resented it.

All that being said, I liked having him as our QB and always wished him luck.

And again I ask why Kirk got more hate when Griff behaved so much worse? This is clearly the case.

Kirk didn't reject US, he rejected playing for one of the worst organizations in sports and nobody should be blaming him for that. His crimes were he wanted to maximize his income, play for a better organization and he threw a pick against the Giants. Oh the horror! Meanwhile Griff set the franchise back years because of the wasted picks and years trying to make him what he should have been and never received the hate Kirk did.

As I recall, Cousins did want to stay, Allen botched the negotiations.

As for Griffin, he gets WAY more hate. Cousins may have no idea how to properly grill a steak, but Griffin is a complete narcissistic assclown.

Snydely and his minions lowballed him big time with their initial offer, and at some point he gave up on working toward a compromise, and started planning his exit. It was obvious he was never going to get a fair offer. Jock sniffing Snyder was way too enamored with the fragrance of RG3 to ever warm up to Kirk and by the time Robert was out of the picture it was too late. I never blamed him one bit for wanting to exit the shit show.

I think it’s entirely at their discretion how much they choose to spend. I’ve posted this elsewhere, but unlike Snyder, who had one revenue stream, Harris had multiple, including I’m sure some residual interests in private equity which is where he made his money.

Mitch Rales also is loaded.

between the two of them only, they have a net worth of over $15 billion. Any amount of cash they want to get, they can get in a variety of ways.

So it’s not like they don’t have access to the money. Snyder was entirely dependent on NFL revenues sharing. And the dumb fuck spent the money on his private jet and yacht rather than on the team. Which was his right but ultimately cost him in the end.

Now, how much they choose to spend? Who knows. And why they will choose to spend what they choose to spend. Again who knows.

However they have many ways to get to cash. You didn’t say this, but the idea that they are cash strapped is not true. The idea that they might want to be fiscally conservative for whatever reason might be true. We’ll see. They also might go crazy. Who knows.

Which of these interpretations of the outcomes of the hiring cycle is more likely:
- hiring cycle key events that are relevant:
1) Kliff and WAS mutually part ways
2) Kliff doesn't get OC job, 21 available.

Interpretations:
a) Kliff did not want an OC job
b) Kliff did want a job but couldn't get one
c) WAS let Kliff walk and now has an OC that more people want than one that fewer people want. We have had the inverse for many years (proven when Scott was finally let go, EB was let go)
d) Most of the NFL GMs are wrong, and the posters here who think Kliff should have an OC job are right

I would say (b) and (c) are likely true, and I would say they are pretty easy to see. Occam's Razor to some extent, but also implied heavily by a lot of quotes we can read, by simple observables, not a lot of detailed guesswork here. I would say the other options, like (a) and (d) would involve some contortions. I hope all or a large, large majority of us can agree on that now.

I'm not saying anything on the "why" here. I know that can still be up for debate, understandably. The thing we should be able to agree on here is we shed ourselves of an undesired OC. I know there were some positive stats a lot of people like to point to, but these organizations (GMs, HCs) tend to look a lot deeper and have perhaps seen that overall Kliff's scheme isn't a net positive (again, for whatever reason, it doesn't totally matter in my mind).

Yeah, agreed. I may have said it in a confusing way, but that’s what I meant by “they may be constraining the cash we spend, but not because they have cash constraints”.

Did you expect him to look into the camera and tell us he hates playing for this shit show? He would have been seen as troublemaker and hurt his value. Do you really believe players backing a coach who was fired or on the hot seat reflects their true feelings? Jim Kelly said he was thrilled to be drafted by Buffalo, years later he admitted that was a total lie and he was very upset about it.

Players lie to us all the time, for some reason Kirk is the only one who is criticized for it.

Why are you so fired up about this, lol?

Just like Scherff - he could've easily just said 'I'm going to do what's best for me and my family, we'll see what happens'. There is no reason to lie - and 'not lying' didn't require him to bare his soul to the fanbase either. I don't hate Cousins (and I think your whole assertion that half the fanbase does is a red herring). I just didn't like the way he played it on the way out. And folks can trash Bruce Allen for 'lowballing' Cousins but the truth is that it was other teams who wildly overpaid for Kirk's services who have been left holding the bag with not much to show for it. I would've preferred we had found a way to re-sign him, but in retrospect it's not exactly a disaster of epic proportions that we didn't.
