If JD was 100% healthy I would play him...he needs it. Problem is I don't think he has been healthy the majority of the year. The situation we are in makes it so much more difficult to evaluate him and the rest of the team. Going to be so much doubt heading into the offseason.
If I am the owner I am evaluating the GM, coaches, entire defense and selected offensive players before I am worried about evaluating Daniels future.
We took him #2 overall and he can play in the NFL. The question is are we building this the right way to make for a consistent winner or trying to hit lightning in a bottle and when that doesn't work all of a sudden we are out there naked with the stage light on the organization?
To me this is a 1980 moment.
In 1980 after a 6-10 finish Cooke invited Beathard and coach Jack Pardee into a series of meetings to determine how to proceed with the running of the team.
The play on the field was uninspiring, there was an aging roster of players and the previous year the team had traded a number of its draft picks away for veterans whose play was underwhelming.
In the end Cooke determined that he wanted to go with a team built on the draft and needed to find an offensive coach who was creative and could work with Joe Theismann to make him better and develop #1 pick Art Monk.
It became clear Pardee wanted to simply win now. His view was rookies made mistakes and it was better to go with players that had already proven they could play in the NFL.
Beathard endorsed Cooke's vision and amplified it with how the front office and coaches in Miami had built up a two time Super Bowl winning squad.
Pardee was fired.
I think we are at that type of crossroads.
What we don't know here in the lead up was how assertive Quinn was in trading for Lattimore and bringing in older players to fill out the roster, or whether this was a decision Peters favored and Quinn simply went along with that POV.
What we have done here is NOT what Peters and Lynch did in San Francisco. Yes, they traded for Trent Williams and McCaffrey but that was AFTER they had already been to the Super Bowl and had a team that was consistently in the playoffs.
That #1 defense that the 49ers built was based on draft picks like Greenlaw, Warner, Hufanga, Bosa, etc. who became pro bowlers.
I am not seeing that here.
