The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Feels like destiny that he’s going to come here. Whether he’s broken or not, remains to be seen. But I expect him to be a Commander.
I'm not sure that I'm excited yet. Apparently he chose not to participate in team activities/meetings to the extent that SF wants out of the contract. Almost like it might be Haynesworth the sequel.

Aiyuk brings some drama clearly. Heck so does Terry apparently, too. Eagles have a lot of drama and keep winning.

I am mixed on it. i am more concerned about Aiyuk's knee than I am the drama though.

I am looking forward to getting some more info on his knee health and what his other issues are with SF. He was happy choosing to stay there when signing. Wondering if he doesn't like the other WR talent they now have (if and when they are are healthy). We all had him pegged as a no brainer signing previously

I just have to wonder what parts of the story I’m missing, for him to willfully part with the cash.

Yeah im with you …. It’s not exactly passing the smell test of a good investment, or at least not as easy as we may want it to be.

He’s absolutely a talent, but there are a lot of flags with question marks. Not necessarily red flags but questions. From the outside, he doesn’t appear to fit the culture this team has prioritized.

Aiyuk has been paid.

Now the 49ers find out who he really is 🙀

We had the same reckoning with the 14 sack Daron Payne two years ago.

How many sacks does he have this year?

How has his veteran ‘leadership’ helped the franchise?

This is a WR group lacking talent and durability. it’s a no brainer that they should take a shot on Aiyuk. That’s not even taking into consideration the relationship with JD5 and Peters. There’s been a lot of drama with Aiyuk over the last couple years. Hopefully that leads to a short deal for him to prove he still has worth that overcomes the baggage.

If we do bring him in I’d certainly not consider the WR group complete. My concern with Aiyuk is that he’s never really been that great. We need greatness to pair with JD5 sooner than later.

There needs to be another guy in FA or the draft that can compete, and hopefully beat out, Luke and Lane.

If they sign Deebo again then that’s just a bonus gadget player.

Another player coming off a bad injury.

I think we need to look at at least acquiring players that are healthy, even though they seem to go down as soon as they arrive.

Besides after all Aiyuk did to take SF through the wringer on his contract with all the public nastiness and BS, who really needs that type of guy?

On the one hand, I'm very leery of someone like Aiyuk. Either he's injured and hiding it or he legit just quit on the 49ers.

On the other hand, I've seen what happened with Pickens going from a heel in PIT to a great team player in DAL.

Also, I'm of the opinion we need not none, not one, but TWO high tier receivers before 2027. FA is extremely thin for top talent. Maybe there's a #2 in there somewhere, maybe, like a Pierce or Doubs, but the only guy who really makes me excited is Pickens, and that assumes Dallas doesn't pay him. A healthy Aiyuk (quite the assumption already) would give us a lot more flexibility on how to approach FA and possibly the draft.

So what happens if Aiyuk arrives on a one year and then balls out? Then we get the BS contract stuff that SF went through. Or we have to look yet again for a solution.

What people don’t get is these guys know how to lay low and put up some numbers but then when it’s money time the monster rears its ugly head.

Antonio Brown was able to fool 3 other teams into giving him chance after chance and he would behave for awhile.

But a leopard doesn’t change its spots.

Replace old talent with young talent.

Pickens is the best and youngest FA potentially available. Talent is undeniable. Replaces Debo and Terry after 2026.
Pitts, also 25, replaces Ertz. Offense would be pretty much set. Support Franchise cornerstone.

Help at all 3 levels of the defense would be nice.

Can we afford three premium FA signings?

Honestly, who cares? We can’t be scared of success, even if it’s only brief for a small piece of the puzzle. If Aiyuk balls out and actually deserves for someone to pay him a significant contract - that would be a fantastic problem to have.

Good franchises handle the divas well. They don’t avoid them all together.

you could argue there is a track record that the better teams tend to shy away from them. Philly puts up with Brown, but KC shipped off Hill, Buffalo shipped off Diggs, Green Bay moved on from Adams.

It's clearly not everybody, i'm not stating that there's only one way... but there has been a trend of teams not continuing with premium, high priced WRs.

Of course there is a cost factor when you're paying your starting QB that likely pushes a good number out because they want top of the market money, but Philly and Cincinnati find ways to pay at the position so there's data points in both directions.

In all three of those scenarios I would say that they didn’t shy away at all. Buffalo in fact traded for Diggs. All three examples traded those players away for a nice haul. Buy low sell high. Those franchises have handled divas well. They get production out of them and then turn it into more draft capital.

yeah you're not wrong

Then you get a 3rd round comp pick in 2027

I'd bet money there is more to the story that we aren't getting. Aiyuk's relationship with the coaches / front office soured and he it basically seem like both sides are happy to move on. It's entirely possible that they talked about this path forward and both agreed.

Peters should know what's going on behind the scenes regarding Aiyuk. We have no idea what's going on, but Aiyuk has had a real contentious relationship with that team for a couple of years now. If his knee is ok, I'd trust Quinn to incorporate a guy who may or may not be high maintenance.

The big question is if he can actually play. That knee was an ACL/MCL/meniscus all at once.
