Commanders @ Dallas - Next Day Thread

I acknowledged the missing weapons may be part of Jayden’s statistical regression, but let’s not overstate the case. On paper our receiving corps should be improved over last year with the addition of Deebo Samuel and Jaylin Lane. And while the injured wideouts were definitely a big factor yesterday, that doesn’t explain why he had 18 incompletions against Green Bay.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Jayden and have the highest hopes for him, but there is no denying he is playing worse this year.
I don't care much about the Greenbay game because that happened so early in the season that it's just rust and timing to me. Burrow was trash in the first game and usually starts off slow so that's typical. Yesterday was more concerning. I in no way think that our receiving core should be better than last year's, at least not right now. Maybe by the end of the season but Dyami Brown and Zachheus are clearly better receivers at this moment than Lane and Mccaffrey.

With that being said, and some key drops included, there were also a number of throws that Jayden flat out missed yesterday.

First off people get mad when I say it but that brace is bothering him. Think about having a heavier, bulky, movement limiting device on your leg. His mechanics look off to me because of it. He's also way slower now. He looks like he's running closer to 4.6 this year on most plays and he got hurt on a called QB run where I think that he still was affected by the brace.

He's having trouble out running people, escaping, and playing with natural fluidity. He's making too many arm throws, off his back foot. Our run game has also come to a halt, just like it did last season.

I totally agree. You can't get rid of the ball if you don't trust your WRs to be where they are supposed to be, and you can't build that trust if you don't have WRs who practice, or the QB is hurt and can't practice.

It's all a mess.

Yeah and to that point, some "misses" could be WRs not where they are supposed to be.

I think it was Logan if I recall who said in the previous game he can hear the Wr coach tell one of the WRs that he went to the wrong spot, or something like that.

Sheehan just mentioned this team leads the NFL in Wrs drops.

The good thing is that we still aren't out of it. 11-6 should get you in. 10-7 maybe but that's too risky. Coming into the season, if you picked 6 losses, you would say at Greenbay, at LA, at KC, home to Detroit, at Philly, and then one of the Denver or Minnesota games. We weren't supposed to lose to Atlanta, Chicago, or Dallas, but we did beat LA, so that means we have to make up 2 more losses.

Some say the season is over now and some say that it will definitely be over with a KC loss but if healthy, I still think that we can go on a run. We have 3 wins. You should be able to beat Miami, NY, and home against Dallas. That's 6 wins. I'm not scared of McCarthy or Wentz and we should be fully healthy by then. That's 7. If we are healthy then Seattle and Denver are still very beatable at home. They are not juggernauts. That's 9 wins.

Basically we have to find a way to go 2-2 against KC, Detroit, and Philly twice. I think that is doable. The KC game is not looking good for us right now but 2 out of the other 3 are at home and we should be fully healthy at least for both Philly games. Keep the faith. It looks bad right now but we still have the QB and the talent to click. We can be unstoppable just like Dallas if we get Jayden, Terry, and Deebo going together.

The good thing is that the team, including Jayden were baking in the glow of last year and feeling themselves like they were KC or someone. Now they should get that underdog mentality back and have something to prove. Maybe not this week but we have to get going soon after but I do think that we are capable of winning nearly every game once we click. We aren't far off. Just need some fine tuning

Agree. It's not uncommon for a team with upstart success to be feeling themselves and it crashes some the next season. The locals were right when they asked Quinn how it he going to adjust to be the hunted versus the hunters. He had a good comeback to that saying they will always be the hunters -- but it doesn't feel like that.

You can even argue the Cowboys were the hunters versus Washington. Washington leapfrogged them this year. The national media mostly wrote Dallas off this off season and said its between Philly and Washington. Dallas you'd figure would have that motivation edge to show that they remain the team that can contend with Philly for ther division not Washington.

I think it finally registered with Quinn last night. Him saying he was "very surprised" that the season has gone the way it has -- was telling. I think they expected with the additions to the team, another year of experience from Jayden that they steamroll through the season.

Love JD5, but watching in-person yesterday he was definitely

Love JD5 and believe he is the one. but watching in-person yesterday he does look slower and less elusive. Frankly, when scrambling Mariotta looked better to me. And those misses were UGLY watching from field level.

He's still not fully recovered from the knee. But honestly, he still rushed 8 times for 35 yards, and was our leading rusher.

I'm going to stick with the "timing is off" and the WRs weren't always where he expected them to be. He was super accurate last year. I don't think that just vanishes. What vanished was the practice time with WRs.

It's clearly the blueprint right now and that's honestly disrespectful. Any great offense we want to play against man coverage, especially when you have an elite QB with blazing speed but it never all clicks. With the injuries we either can't get open, we are dropping passes, Jaydens accuracy is way down. When that works then our blocking sucks. Jayden can't outrun defenders or he's getting 7yd gains on plays where he got 20yds last season. It's all a struggle right now and KC with Spags is going to play the same way, except with even more pressure

You got Jayden with a brace who isn't the same runner for that reason. By stacking the box you make it more difficult to run for him, too.

So you work up a game plan by pressuring Jayden and just dare him to quickly get rid of the ball to McCaffrey, Lane, Moore. If McCaffrey, Lane, Moore beat you so be it. But run the defense like those three receivers can't beat your corners and the rest takes care of itself.

Even Joe Burrow, some argue is the most accurate QB in the NFL, who played in college with Chase and for years in the pros -- said when Chase held out in camp, their timing was off.

It feels like its either cool with some (not you) to take an outlier position that Jayden isn't who we thought he was or its a good way to vent that even our Superman is failing us -- but on a scale from 0-100, my concern about Jayden is at a 0. He's a slam dunk superstar.

But i think our expectations for him are insane when he is playing dudes who were or should be on the street are his #1 WR. They lead the league in dropped passes. And he's had almost no reps with his two top starting receivers. That somehow Jayden isn't the same from last year as if its on him as if context has nothing to do with it. Other star QBs are given an out with similar circumstances but not Jayden?

While Mahomes largely did his job on Sunday, his circumstances are not ideal. An argument can be made that the biggest reason the Chiefs haven't found their rhythm on offense is because Mahomes is operating without three of his receivers -- Rashee Rice (serving a six-game suspension to start the season), Xavier Worthy (right shoulder) and rookie Jalen Royals (right knee).

The Chiefs are optimistic Worthy will play next week against the New York Giants, but how effective he'll be, while wearing a harness, remains a large question.

AI Overview

Lack of preseason and offseason practice reps has consistently affected the chemistry between Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase
. Due to a history of injuries to both players, their joint practice time has been limited, and this has contributed to the occasional "kinks" in their rhythm at the start of seasons.

It's hard to put this on JD, yes he's missed some throws but he had almost 190 yds of offense at the half. I tend to think it's the all UPS team he has at WR.

I would see how these next couple of weeks go and then unload what you can (including Terry)for draft collateral. We need as many picks as possible.

I definitely don't put this on Jayden. He still was solid and made some big time plays. We are without a doubt limited with our receiver injuries and every opponent is going to challenge that. Some of it is timing with the new guys and some of it is there weaknesses compared to the starters. Jayden is sometimes throwing it to the spot where he thinks Terry or Deebo would be at but these guys move slower, etc. Still, he's clearly has not been consistent. It wasn't his fault at all but we have held him to a high standard that he himself set. We judge him on the elite tier and expect him to overcome some of our deffencies, fair or unfair and he hasn't consistently done it. Still, I have faith that it will click soon, especially when healthy.

With that being said, one thing that is concerning is he's started to be pretty loose with the ball and teams are targeting that. The play he left on, he fumbled before he was grabbed all the way. The defender had already knocked it out when he was going by. Some of that is because he was already hurt a few plays before but he still needs to start securing the ball when he starts to move in or outside of the pocket.

He had that fumble against the Bears that he recovered. People think that was because of the rain but it wasn't. His left hand actually hit it when he was running and knocked it out of his right hand. Him and Bill need to be stronger in securing the rock. We still had a chance until that fumble. We were driving to cut it to one score

Damn.

When Dakota tells the press that he knew they could run away with this game, that’s rather damning.

Who is going to be the sacrificial lamb for that?
I took that a little differently.

I had hoped that Whitt and Quinn having practiced against Dak and the offense for years would give them insight into how they thought, what their tells and tendencies were, etc. Instead, it worked out exactly opposite. It was Dak who knew and could predict most of what Whitt would do and how he would attack their offense. Knowing what the scheme is in advance is a huge advantage.

Feels like a similar situation to LaFleur. They worked with each other in Atlanta but its advantage LeFleur who has owned Quinn.

Yeah, which means Whitt is not enough of a checkersmaster... I mean chessmaster.

It's a good point. Dak basically said he knows this defense's tendencies. Whitt should know that of course. Yet, he just stuck to doing what he does, regardless, versus changing those tendencies.
