Hats off to Rex

I'm not sure that Sellers doesn't share some of the blame on that one.

I guess I would have to watch the play again. I agree that this could have been the reason. It just appeared that Sellers was fairly far upfield when the ball was thrown. For Sellers to reach the flat and then run upfield would take a bit of time and the corner had to run back and make a dive for that ball. I just thought he was throwing it away and screwed up. I admit, I could be wrong though.

Omni, I wondered about that too, I wonder if its more because he is more comfortable or is it a systemic thing that Mcnabb isnt grasping. IMHO If Shanny could make Plummer into a probowler , I dont know how he could fail with Mcrapp unless Mcrapp pretty much refused to change at all.

I don't necessarily think McNabb refuses to change. I just think mentally he is not capable of changing quickly. I think this is where a major mistake was made in trading for him, although, the coaches cannot know how fast he will grab their philosophies.

There is more of an element of surprise up under center than shotgun. I think that gives Rex an advantage. If Shanny can make Plummer into a pro-bowler, I have faith that he could turn Rex into a solid starter for the short term. In the Rex to Start thread, I posted some of Plummer's numbers with and without Shanny. I am not saying that he can do this with Grossman, but it is promising (not sure that is the right word I am looking for).

exactly...plus Grossman throws a horrible long ball. he doesn't have the arm strength.

I don't think it matters how strong his arm is. His arm is strong enough to play well in this league. There are guys that have worse arms than his having better careers at this point. There are also guys with stronger arms having worse careers. If he eliminates the mistakes, he is fine with me.

FS the bonus of a placeholder type QB is we dont have a huge amount invested in him, if we find a better option in free agency we can grab him (Collins maybe?).

I hope you are not suggesting Todd Collins over Grossman. Collins had his moment, it is time to move on.

O.K., for a brief moment I'm going to venture into what might be "Serv have you lost your damn mind?" territory.

Last night the Packers backup QB, Matt Flynn in for Rodgers had what I consider an eyebrow-raising effort against the Pats in the Pats backyard.

After the 2011 season, he's FA.

Am I insane for thinking of the plausibility of giving him a serious look?

Bring it on, I'm thick-skinned and I promise not to get mad.

You havent lost your mind, but we need to see a better sample size, remember guys like Mike bishop for the patsies looked good in short spurts. Smith from the ravens and now niners did too. but im with you, id rather take risks at this point than lose with a known quantity.

This scenario I'm hypothesizing about is, of course, based on several contingencies. First, evidence that, as you alluded to G.,, that the game against New England wasn't a fluke and that his demonstrated "poise" is an intrinsic part of what he could bring to the table as a QB. Second-I'm looking at this as a situational "keep in mind" option given the uncertainty about where possible QBs may fall in the draft versus what draft positions the Redskins finally wind up with. Basically, it's a "keep your options open" perspective rather than a "we're doing it this way come Hell or high water" approach. Yes, it was just one game, but it was against probably the hottest team in the league at their house and I wonder how many backup QBs in the league could have handled that kind of pressure with equal aplomb.

I think we all agree that we need a larger sample size. Flynn has no game tape with which to prepare, so the Pats were going in blind. And despite how great a coach and motivator Belichick is, I have a feeling it is easier to get up for playing Aaron Rodgers than Flynn.

But I very much like the tone of your post, particularly where you remind us that we need to be flexible. I know I tend to enter into the FA and draft periods thinking we need to do X, Y and Z, and if everything falls right, we could do W. But the fact is, things change, we need to be open to seeing what happens.

a guy like flynn is a guy you spend a 2nd rounder on imho , if he continues to play pretty well, a young guy with upside who is just stuck behind a superior player (at this point) although I wouldnt wnat to go more than a 3rd, we dont have a third

I don't see how you can give up a 2? We haven't seen nearly enough, imo. At most, I would consider a 4th, but be much happier with a 5th or lower. If he continues to play well if Rodgers is still out, then great, we can consider increasing the offer. But I would need to see a lot more, though I like the idea.

EDIT: Let's also not forget that Flynn has a better O-line and certainly better receivers in Jennings and Driver than anything we have. Better weapons tend to make a QB look better.

Ry...didn't see the game...but...I did watch Brady last night. and the thing that got me was I was counting off the seconds he took on the short passes (including screens) and it was always a fast 2-2.5 secs. I interpret that to mean a quick decision-maker. Did Flynn demonstrate the same fast thinking?

I'm not sure that Sellers doesn't share some of the blame on that one. Everyone could easily see the blitz was coming. Not sure if Mike wasn't supposed to break off his route sooner, or at least look for the ball sooner, in that case.

Just saw the play again. Sellers deserves a lot of the blame along with Montgomery and Brown. Sellers runs out chips his man, but Brown and Montgomery get blown up. Grossman is under pressure, thinks Sellers is there, but he is not, obviously.

When a back chips a man and lets them go, 99.9% of the time the back immediately turns around to recieve a quick dump off. The o-line did not do their job. Moss faked the end around on that play, so it was a long developing play to begin with. O-line and Sellers were really the cause of that turnover. Rex gets a pass on this one IMO.

Still had the bad fumble. This was his first game in two years, besides the 9 passes he threw for Houston last year.

so..he thinks sellers is there...but doesn't see the field and decides to pass anyway?

Yeah, that's what I thought when I saw it live. I won't let Sexy off the hook completely, but I do believe Sellers gets an assist on the turnover. Maybe the coach will comment on the play and enlighten us all.

As quick as Brady?

No-but how many QBs are?

Maybe it was a busted route and he was under pressure but it was still a bad pass.

But then again I don't think anyone expects Grossman to be perfect.

Al, we are talking about a guy who has been on the bench for the better part of two seasons here. I set the over/under for INTs at 3.5 yesterday with my wife. She took the over, I took the under and was pleasantly surprised.

Goaldie...I don't begrudge Grossman what he achieved. I saw his good side and his bad side. he made mistakes....he was a superbowl QB. that was an ugly mistake and it shouldn't have happened. he just winged that ball up for grabs.

what was the prize.....

Well, we don't know what was supposed to happen, but, all QB's throw to spots, without necessarily seeing them, expecting the receiver to be there, in certain situations.

Don't know if that's the case here, but a lot of times, when a blitz is obvious, receivers break off their routes, or at the very least, look for the ball sooner.

Sellers, doesn't think he's a fullback, he thinks he's Bobby Friggin Mitchell. Wouldn't be unlike him to take it upon himself and turn what was supposed to be the QB's check down option, into a fly pattern.

Again, I don't know.

Wouldn't you like to know?

I agree he made a mistake, and he will make more. I don't honestly expect a greatly different QB from what we saw in Chi. But I am pleased that for one game, our offense moved the ball, and sorta somewhat kinda resembled a professional team. First time since maybe the Hou game?

I would say it happens more often than you think. Especially with guys that are real familiar with how a system is run and they are relying on the players around them to do their jobs properly.

Flynn looked pretty solid but he isnt anywhere near as heady as Brady, few are. I should clarify, if we werent rebuilding everything I would be willing to give up a 2 on a guy witih upside not a 34 year old on the obvious downswing. as it is I wouldnt give up more than a 3 and we dont have a 3 so therfore no flynn lol.
