2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Offense

Listening to Bram, Logan and London on the "booth review" podcast, they were all REALLY high on Sinnott. Said he's been blocking extremely well, and is going to earn opportunities in the pass game.

Logan said Sinnott and McCaffery were both very similar in that they were young players who were developing, and were in the "structure of the offense." But they didn't have plays designed specifically for them like Deebo or, when healthy, McLaurin. However, they need to take advantage when the read draws the ball to them.

Logan also said that on McCaffery's 50 yard TD, they were actually calling a play for Ertz, but the safety went with Ertz, and that freed up McCaffery, JD5 read it perfectly and the ball went where it was supposed to go. And McCaffery made the play. And the more plays you make when you are just "in the context of the offense" the more opportunities you'll get, and they will start designing plays to target you.

He said that he wouldn't be shocked if they started to give Sinnott some opportunities in the pass game to run the routes Ertz normally runs to reward him for the blocking he is doing.

All three of them were really impressed with the improvement of these two specifically.

That podcast is a good listen if anybody is looking for a good football discussion with a definite homer tilt. Both London and Logan know ball. London should be in the HOF.

Not me. I've always been a Paul fan, his size like Kinlaw just stands out. I think his performance against Carter was excellent and we discussed this but nobody gave him much of a chance to be anything but a backup.

But let's not forget what the plans for Coleman have been and what they may be now. It could be an interesting discussion as to just what is going on. Are they upset that he didn't return to practice after a minor injury? Or was it just his play which has been really bad?

I wasn't a Paul believer because, while he has always been strong and stout, he seemed like a clunky athlete. He seems to have gotten better on that front this year and is not a liability as a puller on run plays anymore.

Of all the guys we should be targeting to give an in-season extension to, it is Paul. The more he can sustain this performance, the higher his number is going to be in free agency.

On Coleman, I wanted one of the second round tackles or Amegadjie (who has done nothing) instead. Paul and Rosengarten have been good for their teams. What does suck is that Beebe, Goncalves and Puni have all been good for their teams. In fact, Goncalves was one of the better rookie tackles filling in for Braeden Smith when he was out for mental health reasons.

This is a disappointing outcome for him but maybe he is the swing tackle next year or takes over for Cosmi at RG in 2027 if he develops and we let Cosmi go.

Wow, I don't recall hearing any positives on the Sinnott front so this is a welcomed post! If he begins earning play time from Ertz that would be allowing different play calls to match his skill set (not just rewarding for blocking). It also would mean an easier transition from Ertz in 2026. With Bates and a Sinnott like was expected, the team could focus more on a young pass catching TE and less concern on them needing to be a top blocker as well. It allows them to be much more flexible leading to more possible targets in FA or the draft.

I hear you. I was a fan of Rosengarten who seemed like a no brainer at RT and likes Beebe and Paul. That draft was really loaded with OL and oh was it hard watching the talent go off the board without us filling what I thought was our biggest need. In all fairness, Coleman was not awful once he got up to speed with NFL defenders.

The teams best move is to decide now on Paul. If they want to pay him and keep him for a couple more years, then an in-season extension is the way to go. We have seen the Eagles successfully do this over the past few years more than anyone. If they have questions or feel they have a replacement for him on the roster, then let him go and hope for a comp pick.

I really would love to hear they reached an agreement with Tunsil

There's a long way between the doghouse he is in and having any meaningful role.

I do think he's going to get another opportunity. He played ok last year at LT. Maybe the switch to guard has really screwed up his head. The way Quinn spoke about him, if you read between the lines a little bit, it wasn't ONLY play that they had a problem with, there seemed to be some work ethic or maturity issues there as well.

It's possible Coleman got grumpy when they traded for Tunsil and he was forced to switch positions. If he sees himself as a LT, which is a premium spot, and the team took away his opportunity to play there, that could have soured his mood and affected his work ethic. Not saying it did, just that it could. And it wouldn't be terribly surprising if it did.

So we'll see what happens with him.

Sinnot has really earned their trust with his blocking on the move in the run game this season. His snap count did not drop off on Bates return. If he can stay on the field then it’s only a matter of time before he gets a chance in the passing game. I heard an interview with him after the Falcons game when he was asked about that play where he smoked two guys as he led out the RB. He was also asked about the passing game he acknowledged that he has had to make improvements to his route running which he feels he has been doing. He’s also excited for when the opportunity will come as getting the ball in his hands is his” favourite thing to do”. I know some of the fanbase are frustrated by the rate of progress but I think he’s coming along just fine. He might never turn into that dynamic pass catching TE but he’s finding a way to contribute and that will unlock further opportunities for growth.

Logan said the more he's on the field and blocks well, they will eventually create some plays specifically for him to expand his role and reward him.

I don't know if that's true or not, but it seems to make sense.

I'm all for it. Ideally he's the replacement for Ertz next year, but he needs some more production in the passing game before that's really a possibility.

I like Ertz, but I think he's even lost a step from last year. We really need somebody with a little more giddyup at TE to help stretch the defense.

And Sinnott isn't a speedster but does have more giddyup! He also can be exciting in the open field and running through DBs

They played a lot of heavy 2 TE sets against the Chargers, sometimes with Trent Scott in there as a blocking TE. I’d look for this to continue, and it seems like it would be pretty easy to run play action and then hit on of the TE’s when they sneak out. There would be some easy ways to get Sinnott the ball a little more.

I agree. Ertz has mostly been a non factor this season. We could really use a TE that can both block, and get up the seam next year. If we could get someone really good, I’d prioritize that over WR next year. Deebo, McLaurin, Lane, and Luke isn't a bad starting point in terms of WR depth for the roster.

Add Lane to that group as somebody who can develop. They do have to re-sign Deebo. And I think they should keep taking shots at WR because both McLaurin and Deebo are going to be 30+ and you never know when they will "get old."

They really need a TE though that challenges defenses in the middle of the field. It would open up so many things underneath if the LBs and Safeties had to respect an inside seam route. Right now they can kindof ignore it because Ertz is so slow, a cheerleader who starts on the sideline could get to the middle of the field to cover him even if she gave him a 3 second head start.

I agree with all of this. Lane has actually made some huge plays for us and I think he can develop.

We need to keep taking shots at WR. We are really going to NEED a dynamic pass catching TE that can get up the seam. That would open up things for our receivers just as you said. I just think I’d rather take a shot at that TE than receiver early.

The flip side of that argument is the Bucs. They already had two really, really good WR’s and still took Egbuka, and he’s been a revelation.

Washington Commanders: G Chris Paul
Veteran linebacker Dorance Armstrong Jr. deserves a shoutout for his shockingly strong start with five sacks in five games, but Paul has a top-five pass-blocking grade at his position in what will be his first season as a full-time starter in Washington.

If we resign Deebo, get a pass catching Tight End, and a back up center. I think we have have a lot of money to put on the defense. With Terry, Deebo, Lane, McCaffrey, we can pick up two decent WR, at great prices.

It's great to hear that they like what Sinnott is doing in the blocking game, but it's still a bit disappointing that even with Ertz losing a step this year from last, Sinnott apparently hasn't yet earned having plays drawn up for him and only has 1 reception thus far this season. I'm sure he's working hard, but IMO that either says that 1) his route running and understanding of the offense is still not very good, or 2) the coaching staff isn't very flexible and is set in who does what until something major changes. Neither is very good.

I do wonder if this is just stubborness at the moment by coaches. They can do that. Ertz is in the right spot and Daniels trusts him, and he honestly hasn't done anything to lose his job.

I really like Kliff, but I could see him just riding with Ertz. What needs to happen is they need to give Sinnott some reps in practice to see what he can do with those.

There is a lot to keep track of, so who knows what they are doing. I am guessing, but I think you'll see Sinnott get more opportunities as the year goes on.

I believe 2026 is the last year of cheap Daniels. I think players can negotiate after their third year, so the way we structure deals is going to become increasingly important.

I'm pretty sure I'm right about that, but if I'm not, somebody can correct me.

Based on the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), a first-round NFL draft pick cannot renegotiate their rookie contract until after the conclusion of their third NFL regular season.

Here's a breakdown of the typical timeline for a first-round pick:

  • Rookie Contract Length: Four years.
  • Renegotiation Eligibility: The player becomes eligible for a contract extension or renegotiation after their third regular season is over. This means they can sign a new deal before the start of their fourth season.
  • Fifth-Year Option: First-round picks also have a fifth-year team option included in their contract. The team must decide whether to exercise this option between the conclusion of the player's third regular season and May 1st of the following league year. If the option is exercised, the player is under contract for a fifth season. If a player signs a contract extension before their fourth season, the extension effectively replaces the remaining years of the rookie deal and the fifth-year option.
The rookie wage scale, established in the 2011 CBA, fixed the value of rookie contracts, which is why there's a set waiting period before a player can sign a more lucrative veteran deal.

Right, so I was right. 2026 will be the last cheap contract year with Daniels. That will be year 3. Then they will immediately extend him, because they wouldn't want to get anywhere near a 4th year, 5th year option, franchise tag, etc.

Burrow signed after his 3rd year in 2023. Some of the others did too, but it's a little hard to figure out who...

Cap hit will be cheap in 2027 and most likely 2028 too (relative to rest of league).

Cash spent will be expensive in 2027. But the owners are billionaires so who cares. Not the teams money. When the cash is spent doesn't affect the cap instead it's when it is structured, or spread out, etc etc.

Burrow signed his big extension in 2023 (entering his 4th year). The cap hit that year was just 19.5 million. And then 29.5 million a year later. 2023 was way below market rates, and 2024 somewhat below. His cap hit this year is $46million, and it rises on average $3million a year after that. Even though he signed an extension in 2023. His next two seasons were still much cheaper than the rest of his contract.

To put it another way, in 2023 Burrow accounted for just 8.6% of the teams salary cap. In 2024, it's 11.2%. Once the contract fully kicks in it tries to stay at an average of 16%. There's a lot of wiggle room in the cap in 2023 and still 2024 to add premier talent around Burrow. 2025 is when the Bengals have to start pinching pennies and figuring out cap philosophy.

Edit: If the team structures it so his 2028 cap hit is under $42 million, then 12 QB's in the NFL will have higher cap hits than Jayden. He would be cheap at that point. In 2029, we can assume his cap hit will likely be $60 million or higher.

My guess is a $250M contract
