Offensive line- 2025

Wiley is doing “fine.”

According to his ESPN Pass Block Win Rate, which uses player tracking data, Wiley had a PBWR of 93%, which is top 10 in the league.

Run Block Win rate, I can’t find. He’s nit top 10, and that’s what they list.

Hes better than the fans give him credit for but not great overall.

I give him and everybody else a mulligan for last year. EB just was a disaster. And Howell wasn’t good. And that effected everybody.
Interesting. I had thought Wiley was regarded as a better run blocker than pass blocker.

Regarding protecting Daniels, I think there are two ways to go about it (as well as a combo of the 2):
Upgrade the oline to improve pass protection, giving Daniels more time in the pocket. This also allows for longer developing routes and could improve our run game.
Improve the weapons he has to throw to. Better chance of guys getting open quicker (and the ball getting out quickly), of facing lighter boxes, of hitting chunk plays.

Given who we have (including who we could re-sign) and who we could get via FA (and the draft), it seems to me improving the weapons is the easier route and more likely to yield greater improvement. Outside of Terry, our receivers are more #4’s and 5’s. It’s a complicated discussion though with lots of nuance - for example, which one helps Daniels’ scrambling more? - so it’s going to be interesting to see what AP does. Easy bet that he’d like to address both factors, but how it actually plays out is a different story.

Definitely think there is some upgrading needed, especially to protect Daniels. We don't want him to have to always make plays with his legs. It wouldn't hurt to have a stronger rushing game either (which would also be to Daniels' benefit).

I would look for an upgrade at LT in free agency (Stanley?) and kick Coleman inside to LG. Wylie is better than we give him credit for at RT but we need to look to find his replacement as well even if that’s a draft pick we develop to step in for 2026.

Would love to get Stanley, a CB, and a WR in free agency. We would be totally set up for the draft.

Our OL is reasonable but I don't think we need All Pros. We definitely need improvement. I am a fan of lunchbox blue collar old school corn fed monsters

You wouldn't kick Coleman to RT? He wasn't horrible on the outside in his limited play time. I'd like to see him and Stanley as bookends. If Wylie stays let him battle for G and can move outside if required

I’ve been thinking that 1) it’s probably easier for us to significantly upgrade our weapons than the oline, and 2) upgrading the weapons might have more of an impact - pulling a defender out of the box, forcing defenders off the LOS, and so on.

With that said, if I were facing our team, and we had added high end weapons in the offseason, I might actually double down on blitzing, stacking the box, etc. - ie attacking our weakness (OL) - rather than dropping more into coverage…

No thank you to Ronnie Stanley. The guy hit the straight flush on health this season. His injury history scares the crap out of me.

The more and more I think about it, I am liking the idea of Trey Smith assuming the long clot issue that caused him to slide to round 6 aren't a mid term issue. The guy is an All Pro 25 year old badass guard who plays with a mean streak. Adding him would help us further improve how we deal with Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis and give us one of the best interior OLs in football.

I think Coleman will be fine at LT and I'm happy with keeping him there. He's gotten better and better and will probably take a step next year if he can stay health in camp. What's clear is the guy will need to make some changes to his S&C routine to avoid all these injuries he's dealt with.

In this league, I think you have to draft your own tackles for the most part because good ones don't generally make it to FA. I am fine with rolling with Wylie another year and taking a guy Day 1 or Day 2 who can rotate with him before taking over.

One thing I think Peters and Quinn understand that fans struggle with: the OL is the sum of its parts and chemistry is often more important than individual talent.

The OL actually has good chemistry now, especially on the interior. I actually very serious doubt they actively go out to upgrade at LG. My guess is they’ll want to keep Allegretti/Biadacz/Cosmi consistent instead of trying to integrate a new player.

I do think they’re going to look at Tackle. But Wylie is under contract for next season. Lucas is not.

I could see them drafting a tackle. However, maybe not in the first round. And I could see Wylie starting again next year.

I’d actually really like them to re-sign Lucas. Dude is a perfect fit at swing tackle. Do that and then draft a guy to replace Wylie.

The other question is, how much can Coleman improve. Remember he missed all of training camp and is a rookie. Players get better with work and coaching. He's far from a finished product. And he’s been pretty good.

If you’re expecting whole scale changes on the OL, I don’t think you’re going to get your wish.

But I do think they’re will look to add better depth.

Sadly, I fear Trent Scott’s days are numbered…
Lucas has been an incredibly valuable player here for several years. Give this man his money.

It's a shame more OL didn't match their board when they picked. I'd feel a little better if they had a mid-round pick or two in the pipeline.

I think with the depth being as bas as it is we will see a few signings. My hopes is that either Allegretti or Wylie (prefer Wylie or both) get replaced and become those terrific backups that some teams have (allegretti can play center too, so that would be a big + over Deiter). Their current pay is along those lines, so is doable.

I think Coleman ends up at guard personally. He’s not done badly at LT but I think he can be a very good guard as opposed to a so so OT.

Maybe. But probably not next year because then they would need 2 OTs and Allegretti is one of the 3 best OL on the team.

I think they’re going to draft a few guys but finding good OTs is hard.

someone climbing into our area of the first round

By the way on Coleman - he struggled yesterday. Had a rough outing - I do think his future is either moving inside to LG or perhaps a move to RT if we draft/sign someone who is an upgrade at LT. He can improve/develop himself of course - he's getting invaluable snaps this season as a rookie.

BUMP. I thought we had an offensive line thread already going, and didn't want to start a new one. But after yesterday's game, I think a dedicated spot to talk about the OL would be good.

A few OL specific thoughts from yesterday's game/lineup:

  • I love the fact that the players who weren't playing well were benched and they tried something else. This is so new and novel. Coleman was struggling. Allegretti just isn't physical enough. In past regimes, (Ron and Jay specifically), they would have just kept on trotting out the same guys and tried the same thing over and over and over again, and it wouldn't work over, and over and over again, and they would have no answers. I love the fact we tried SOMETHING. It might not have worked, but at least they tried something.
  • We have 2 young players we asked to flip positions. I think we as fans might underestimate how hard that can be, even along the OL.
    • Coleman from Tackle to Guard. It's an entirely different mentality to play guard from tackle, different technique, and it takes time to learn. I know a lot of folks thought Coleman would be a better guard than tackle, but I think, if memory serves, he has A LOT more experience at tackle. So asking him to learn a new position might take a little time.
    • Conerly from Left to right. I think it was Logan Paulsen who said making this switch is like learning to write with your opposite hand. everything is backwards. Footwork is backwards, hand positions are backwards, it's just all backwards. If you've always been on one side, it takes some time to figure out.
  • I don't think the book is closed on Coleman as a starter or at guard. He might be back in by the end of the season. He's a good player and a good athlete.
  • The one thing I questioned over the off-season with the OL, to begin the season, we were going to have a complete lack of continuity from 2024/2025 season to the 2025/2026 season. Only one player was going to stay in the same position:
    • LT: Tunsil - Trade and new starter. Upgrade from Coleman, but still different.
    • LG: Coleman - Original plan was Coleman, now it's Paul, and both are a change from Allegretti.
    • C: Biadacz - only planer in same spot
    • RG: Allegretti/Paul/Wylie - Somebody was going to be new because Cosmi is still recovering.
    • RT: Conerly - Draft pick they wanted to start.

That's A LOT of change. I typically like to see one or at most 2 new guys in an off-season. We flipped 4. Everybody is learning something new. There was no way that was going to gel together immediately.
  • Wylie should go find EB and beat him over the head with a wiffle ball bat repeatedly. He was never as bad as it appeared in 2023 when he was basically hung out to dry 30 times a game. He's the same player he was back then, and now he's the absolute definition of "fine." He's an average starter at multiple positions on the OL. That's actually super valuable, either as a starter or a multi-position backup.
  • A shout out to Bobby Johnson, OL Coach. He was the one guy when he was hired most fans when, "wait, what? He was on the Giants and their OL stunk." However, as it turns out, he seems to be a pretty good coach when he can coach pretty good players.

I think the switch at LG (and possibly Coleman struggling) was related to the shoulder injury he’s carrying. Sitting and letting that heal seems the smart move. Conerly has had a tough run of edge rushers and defenses to face in his first 3 NFL starts. I think he was solid against the Raiders in pass protection and I think he has been better than expected generally in the run game.

He’s developing.

Yeah, except the coaches were VERY clear it was not injury related but a coach's decision on Coleman. Now, could it be that he is healthy enough to play but has missed practice and they want him to sit and heal up and progress? Sure. But they easily could have said "limited in practice, out for the game with a shoulder." They did not.

So I think there's something more going on. What? I don't know, but something.

I agree, Conerly has had trial by fire to start his career.
