Offensive line- 2025

A few OL specific thoughts:

- Cosmi's window has been open for a week. I'll be interested to see how they handle his return. The OL has been playing well the last few weeks with Wylie in at RG. A fully healthy Cosmi is better than Wylie. But given the amount of time he's missed, I wonder if they try and work him in slowly. I think they're probably going to use most of the 21 day practice window before he actually plays. But we'll see.

- The Coleman thing is now starting to get really odd. That's 3 weeks he's been inactive. He's squarely in the doghouse. The only positive you can take from that is the team won't hesitate to bench one of their own draft picks.

- The combination blocks on the left side with Tunsil and Paul are REALLY good.

- Chris Paul has really improved year over year, and is turning into a really good player. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. He's going to be a sneaky guy they might want to re-sign. I think that will somewhat depend on Coleman. If Coleman can work his way out of the doghouse and back on the field, that limits the need to re-sign Paul. If not, then they have to either re-sign Paul or find another LG. For what it might cost to re-sign him, it might not be a terrible idea to do it in-season.

- Bram brought this up on his "Booth" podcast he does with London and Logan, they aren't calling Conerly's name almost at all anymore. He had a real rough go of it early in the season facing just a litany of pro-bowl or all-pro level pass-rushers. And he did "ok" for a rookie. He's really improved and is getting better week over week. That's really good to see.

I was really surprised at Coleman’s poor performance at LG after all the talk about how he was better suited for guard and his decent performance last year as a tackle. Either 1) he regressed in his commitment to what it takes to succeed in the NFL, 2) he was further behind than we thought in acquiring the skill set for guard, or 3) he may be better suited for tackle after all.

I would rather believe it’s option 2, but I’d be perfectly fine if he turned out to be a really good swing tackle we got in the
third round.

I would love to see some positive analysis on Conerly. We're kind of ride or die with him right now, but I guess that's how he actually grows as a player?

Cosmi, I think we should just be patient. We're 3-2, the Bears game isn't the playoffs. I'm hoping they keep working him up slowly. If he does play, why not have him play half the snaps and rotate at the RG? We did that at LT last season.

Re: Cosmi
I mean, it gets repeated all the time that Coleman has the traits of Guard and not Tackle, but Coleman has the ideal body type for an OT. Size, Arm Length, Wing Span, etc.

The issues affecting Coleman are not physical, they've gotta be mental. In terms of not realizing when, why, and how he should be doing things as a Guard. Chris Paul absolutely stunk as a rookie. His 2nd season training camp was also bad. Sometimes it takes guys awhile, Coleman not playing should not be viewed as weirdly as it is by some here. He didn't take to the transition to Guard quickly, then he got injured for most of the pre-season, he's not ready. Maybe next season he will be.

All I can say is Logan and Bram said they thought he went through murderer's row at the beginning of the season, got his "welcome to the NFL" moments out of the way, and has really settled in and playing well. Somebody else can look up PFF scores and see if they say anything, but the general eye test is he's holding up fine, and they haven't called his name either because he gave up a sack or a penatly in the last couple of games.

So, based on that, he seems to be improving quickly.

Another key is going to be, once Cosmi does come back, if he was struggling, they'd flip Wylie into the spot. Assuming we don't see that, we can assume he's doing just fine.

Paul was in a different spot, to some extent, he was a 7th round pick (if I remember correctly), and really not expected to do much except develop. Which he has, it seems, and it took a little while. You have to be extra patient with late round picks, most of the time.

Coleman is a much higher pick. I posted this in another thread, it's probably more applicable here: Coleman might be salty he was replaced at LT, even if it was by a top-5 LT. He played well enough, by all accounts, and he could have thought he deserved to develop on the premium position on the OL. It has the most star power and makes the most money. Then the team traded for Tunsil, and that forced a move inside. Which he might have not been on board with at all.

And he's a young guy, in his early 20's, and he could have been really salty about that. He could see it as effecting his income potential, and generally unfair.

If you read between the lines of what Quinn said in his presser after Coleman was inactivated, he hinted at it wasn't just play, there were other things going on as well. I read that as maturity and work ethic.

We won't know.

What will be telling, however, is if Coleman is really grumpy and wants to play tackle, Peters could trade him for a mid-round pick to a team which needs a tackle. Heck, they could send him to San Diego. He probably could play tackle better than either of the guys they have right now.

Do I think that's the plan? Probably not. But I wouldn't be overly shocked either. It really depends on his mental state, which is impossible to know.

Conerly still whiffed a few times and gave up 4 pressures. When Wylie did it a few times a game he got skewered. His pass blocking grade was 49.2 for the game and that's very concerning for his "good game".

I may be misremembering, but hasn't Coleman had to learn a new position pretty much every year? I remember last year how surprised we were that he picked up the position as quickly as he did. Didn't we switch which side he was protecting?

Could it just be needing time to get footwork and hand placement to be second nature in another position?

That might explain not starting but inactive for 3 straight games?

That feels more punitive than just being benched for purposes of growth.

Could definitely be the case that Coleman’s in the doghouse, but…
Allegretti’s our swing G and backup C, Trent Scott can play some T and G and plays TE (sorta). If Tunsil were to get hurt, they can move Conerly over and either plug Scott in at RT, or slide Wylie outside and put Scott or Allegretti at RG. Point being, it could simply be that he’s inactive due to the numbers game. That’s separate from why he’s not starting of course.

I hope Conerly has turned a corner and that Paul is the real deal. I can’t help but wonder how much of that has to due with their matchups though.

I've been hearing some chatter than when Cosmi is back, they have a decision to make at LG, either leave Paul or flip Paul out for Wiley.

To me, there's no choice. You leave Paul where he is as long as Tunsil, Paul and Biadacz are all playing well as a unit. Don't mess with things you don't need to mess with. Wiley goes back to being the primary backup for the entire OL. He'll play again.

There is going to be a question of who loses their roster spot when Cosmi comes back. My guess is it's George Fant, who is an OT, and I didn't remember was on the team.

That's exactly what I was hoping. The line ia playing so good. Leave Tunsil, Paul and Biadacz. Then Cosmi take over for Wiley. Then Wiley backs up everything except Center. I think that's a super solid O Line.

No chance this isn’t what happens, barring an injury.

Yeah, you can’t mess with what’s going on with Paul right now, we seem to be watching him ascend into a guy we HAVE to re-sign, a young starter, which is an unexpected surprise from the roster AP took over (and an extremely welcome one). Have to let that play out and not shake up his reality again while he’s breaking out

Same reason we need to keep loading up Bill with touches while we’re seeing him start to truly break out, they’re like butterflies emerging from the chrysalis, you can’t interrupt the process of them breaking out or it could stunt or ruin them. They need the work they’re getting right now to cement them into their final form

I’ve heard Bram, Galdi and Keim all question whether they will slide Wiley over.

I really hope he’s just media speculation and not actually based on anything they’ve heard.
