Offensive line- 2025

Yeah I don’t know where the shoulder thing is coming from. Don’t get me wrong, he may have a less than 100% shoulder and it may be impacting his performance, but Quinn didn’t give him that as an excuse, and he easily could have. He said they made the decision for competitive reasons and implied that it wasn’t permanent and that he’d have the chance to improve his performance to get his spot back. It was a bit of word salad because he pivoted into softening the tone, but Quinn absolutely did not take the opportunity to give Coleman any sort of injury excuse. It was called out as being performance based entirely.

Coleman isn't starting more due to just bad luck. He got hurt, the backup came in and was on fire. The team is riding the hot hand. Chris Paul has apparently been perfect in pass protection. So the team went with him. That's just poor timing to get dinged up and have a backup play immediately like a pro-bowler.

But Coleman didn’t sit because he couldn’t play, he sat because of poor performance, after practicing. Quinn made it very clear after the game, he had every opportunity to say that Coleman was injured and would get a chance when he’s healthy again—but he didn’t. He said other guys out-competed him, and Coleman would have a chance to win it back.

Isn't that almost what I said? Except I wasn't aware it was due to poor performance specifically and not great performance by Paul. There's a difference in meaning, but I didn't watch Quinn's talk so can't comment on that.

The out-competing is clear, Paul is the hot hand. That's not necessarily saying Coleman sucks and was benched. It could still just be bad luck (for Coleman) that Paul stepped in and dominated.

I think it’s pretty different if he was benched for poor performance and then his replacement played well, than if he was forced to sit due to injury and his replacement happened to play well in relief. Those feel like very different situations for a young developing 3rd round pick that we all assume is part of the present and future of this OL. Still likely that he is, but it changes the context of his struggles in a big way.

Can’t say I mind too much Paul earning the starting gig, or having Coleman and Allegretti as our backups, especially with Cosmi hopefully coming back soon. Now C is a different story…

The way the line absolutely dominated in the run game, let's stick with it for a while and see how we do with toting the rock.

Well, I think Coleman did actually kind of suck. Don’t rely on my take. His PFF scores were abysmal. And Paul did look good. That’s not to say Coleman can’t be good. But, there were a lot of people thinking that Coleman would be an upgrade at OG, and that has not at all been the case.

After re-watching the game, Paul stabilized the left side and graded out well. I believe Coleman will eventually be apart of this OL in the future, but Paul impressed and should be the guy going for at LG.The kid deserves the opportunity he's earned and proved it at least for this week. Hes earned the right to start again this coming week vs Atlanta.

And Wylie did a good job manning the RG position as well. So I say play the hot hand so we can protect our QB and implement the running game moving forward. Let's face it, the running game vs Raiders was phenomenal.

HTTR!

Paul is only 27. If Cosmi stays healthy, and Paul re-signs here (he's a UFA), Coleman's path forward is either reverting to backup swing OT, or backup swing OG. That's not a bad thing either. I want to make it clear the perceived loss of value from a 3rd round pick not being everything we hoped is completely offset by a 7th rounder (we drafted him in 2022) playing out of his mind.

The roster situation for the OL here just got even better. Having Coleman not be good as hoped is fully offset by Paul being great with Coleman now as a backup. I don't want to get too much into draft stuff here, but Coleman wasn't a "Commander Tag" player in the 2024 draft. The Ravens starting RT (Rosengarten) was who they hoped would still be there. Conerly had the desired work ethic/drive intangibles. He could still develop (this is Paul's 4th year after all), and a kick in the pants with a demotion from a starting role could do it. Or he could just remain who he is, which isn't bad and he's still got 2+ cheap years left on his rookie deal.

Full disclosure, I thought Adam Peters made mistakes by not cutting Chris Paul the past 2 off-seasons. But then this past training camp it seems all that extra development time paid off.

Give Paul the start, he earned it and see how he plays. We have heard about his potential for 4 years now and it has not been able to shine.

Bobby Johnson needs to work with Coleman and get him on track. I can't see the team having confidence in him at G even as a backup right now.

Sticking with Bobby Johnson, he inherited some good vets. Over the past two years the team has acquired a bunch of starter and/or good backup players via trades and FA. Paul is the only player so far that he may have developed, I say that based on Sunday only. Peters drafted him Coleman and Conerly and he is going to need for them to develop into better players before he earns kudos. I know, they are both young and changing positions but they are a big part of his Commander legacy. He and Kingsbury had to be all in on Conerly as a RT over Coleman and deciding that Coleman would be good at G. Good OL coaches develop talent just like QB guru's. I am hoping in the future he is viewed as a top OL coach! The OL talent we have should be the strength of this team as the season progresses and Cosmi returns which is awesome!

What a point you make regarding Rosengarten. They could have taken him at 53 where they took Sinnnott and taken Sinnott at Colemans 67 slot. That is much closer to where Sinnott was graded out. If that had occurred we would have had a solid RT last season and moved in a much different direction at 29 last year.

Hm, I read a lot of people talking about how Rosengarten >> Coleman, and Paul >> Coleman.
I don't think it's fair at all.
Coleman hasn't had the pleasure of blocking in the situation that Paul blocked in. The playcalling was dramatically different in that game. That doesn't just mean that other games were more difficult to block (they were significantly more difficult, is my opinion), but also that the defense, if prepared, would be completely surprised because of the break in tendency.

There are a lot of things in the mix there.

As for Rosengarten, that is a team with a very strong offensive identity, geared a lot around running. Again, apples and oranges, and as far as I'm concerned, the level of difference makes it quite impossible to directly compare players on the OL.

The Lions absolutely shoved it on the Ravens last night (much to my glee) and proved that a running-oriented offense can definitely still work in this league. We should give it a try for the next couple of weeks before Kliff decides to go all pass-happy again.

He's been doing it for 3 weeks already

I think he was ok to good last year at LT as a rookie who missed most of camp.

However, he wasn't good to start this year. Hence why he's not playing. I think he has the potential to be very good, but it hasn't happened yet.

I just heard Dan Quinn's presser from yesterday. He basically foot-stomped the point where Coleman was not scratched due to injury, it was due to play. Here is the exact quote:

On if he’s surprised G Brandon Coleman hasn’t solidified a starting role: “Well, I think one thing I do know about Brandon and Nick and these guys, man, they're going to put in the work. And so that's the good piece to say he's going to dig in, go for it and battle for it and let's see what the weeks ahead bring because this guy's made of the right stuff, he wants to dig in and go for it. But that's why I was kind of pretty strong about yesterday. This is where we are today, and we'll see what the next space looks like and where we're going. But that is one thing I've learned about him over a year and a half, he's going to put the work in to go and as we're heading into our game four, we'll see what this week looks like. Honestly, nothing's out of the question in terms of the matchups and how we want to go play it. It'll sort itself out, it just still needs some time to get there.”

Nowhere in there did he even hint at an excuse for Coleman. Nothing injury related, nothing at all except, he will put int he work and get better and we'll see.

He could have EASILY used an injury excuse and given Coleman an out. However, in doing that, he wouldn't have been giving enough credit to Paul, who seems to have just taken the job from him, so I'm glad he didn't do that.

Anyway, it will sort itself out. I'm happy Paul is getting an opportunity to play. From my understanding, his run-blocking "in a phonebooth" has never been in question. His athletic ability to get out and run and get to the second level was the issue, as well as his ability to handle the better interior pass rushers.

Those numbers may be skewed by the big total we put up on the ground in Week 3. He all but abandoned the run in GB after the first few possessions.

We had 220 yards rushing vs the Giants too.

Even if he 'abandoned' the run against the Packers, the game plan has been predicated on running the ball. It's been the focal point. I did have the same feeling you did with the lack of running, but a lot of that was the fact that we were behind the chains most of the game. The early down run attempts were there, they just didn't work.

He handled Crosby alone on some of those snaps, too. He’s coming along
