The All Things Terry Thread

I don't actually agree with this. Assuming there is a new deal of some type, I think:

1. At least 70% of the fans think the team should just pay Terry what he wants because they are really concerned about the money from Billionaires.
2. The news cycle moves so fast, this is all going to get forgotten by the media and most fans by the time we hit the end of September assuming he's on the field and playing
3. The national media idiots are going to make it out like Terry "won" in the end almost no matter what.

JP said if Terry was on the field during open practices to the public, a "Pay Terry" chant would have probably broken out.

I think most fans just don't care and want him to get paid. The blowback he's getting on twitter and on message boards only reaches a smallish subset of fans.

Until the national media types like Pat McAfee and others take a hard line against Terry, it's all going to blow over for the majority of fans.

For some of us who follow more closely, the wound is deeper and will be harder to heal.

Sheehan and G. Paulsen did surveys. Sheehan did multiple ones, months back it was 50-50 as to fans being pro or anti-Terry's side of the negotiiation. But then he did 2 more it was 70% or so anti-Terry, 30 % pro. Paulsen's if I recall had similar shifts. And they had thousands of fan participation.

Not hard to see on talk radio and twitter and here, Terry is losing the battle with fans.

As to Terry chants from some fans, that's true. But it doesn't feel like the majority at least not any more.

My point is in the overall fanbase, the group of people who follow the commanders closely on twitter or listen to Sheehan or follow him on twitter (or any other sports radio person) is a relatively small percentage of the fan base.

There is no way to quantify that.

Case in point, we had crab fest at our neighborhood swim/tennis club yesterday, and I was sitting with 2 lifelong Redskins fans. The only thing they knew was:
1. Preseason looked bad
2. Terry's not playing, why?

Both claim to be fans of the team. One has a RIDICULOUSLY cute video of their son, now in HS, rolling around on a Redskins rug which is still in their basement.

Neither pay just about any attention except for when the season starts on Sundays.

And I put the VAST majority of the fans in that category. They go to games, watch games, and pay little attention otherwise.

No way 70% of fans are in favor of a blank check or a significant over pay. Even casual fans understand that there is a team salary cap, only so much pie to go around. No matter what their view on billionaires happens to be.
I think my overall point is 70% (and that number I just plucked out of thin air) of fans don't care or have enough information to make an informed decision.

Cute anecdotal stories aside…you’re point #1, which I was addressing, was pretty substantially expressed.

Thousands of fans on twitter (X) is a lot though. And the shift in sentiment is interesting because it didn't start that way.

I agree though that the casual fan who pays less attention might be more inclined to side with Terry.

But at a minimum, Terry has thousands of Commanders fans who find his behavior distasteful so that's a large number.

At this point I think the majority of fans are 50/50… if he plays good if he doesn’t oh well. When a athlete comes out and pretty much says he feels totally disrespected by a offer of 20+ million a season I’d have to say he lost over 95% of the fan base as we could never relate to that type of $ in our entire life time yet alone 1 year… and please we don’t want to hear that’s the going rate, that in and of itself is pathetic imho

Yeah I could see that.

For me the most surprising aspect of Terry's odd negotiation this off season -- is his public statements, agent leaks and body language makes it all feel even worse.

I think among all that he's said, the one part that goes under the radar is he's basically trashing the FO for being dishonest and unfair. That's our "leader" putting that out there for other future negotiatons. I was listening to a caller on talk radio show, one of the rare pro Terry callers these days, who goes if Peters treats Terry like this wait to you see what he does to Daniels.

It's that kind of crap that Terry has put in the water.

I've seen this kind of this professionally, even though I'm not a football player or professional athlete of any sort.

One employee thinks he is the king of the castle under the previous regime. Most likely, he is, even if it's because he's only slightly above average and everyone else is sub-par. A new regime comes in, brings its own people, brings in new folks who raise the least-common denominator... suddenly the formerly big fish is a little smaller. The new regime knows his weight isn't the same as it was under the old regime because the floor has been lifted all-around.

Formerly big fish gets salty as hell, everyone else carries on life as usual, things still get done. Old boy fish cuts off his nose to spite his face because pride is a hell of a drug.

That's Terry at this point. Not an elite WR in any stretch, still clutch and above-average, but is basing his weight on the old regime still.

I think Terry probably had one superpower or elite skill. That was his ability to win the contested ball. He's really excellent at the hard catch. That is a useful trait in any scheme. However, as amazing as it is, it's value lowers when the QB is really accurate. Sure, there will always be 50/50 balls, but receivers won't have to fight as hard with a Daniels as they did with let's say a Heinicke. So, Terry's one elite skill, while still important, isn't as crucial.

What are the chances that plain old jealousy is playing a part?

Having been the positive face of the team for years, is he having a tough time with the considerable local and national love that Jayden is receiving?
I'm not sure about jealousy for Jayden, but jealousy for the fact we brought in Deebo, a star player at his position, absolutely could be part of it.

I mentioned that the fact they went out and traded for Deebo and he has a big contract might be making Terry nervous, both because he's no longer the only game in town, but also because there is another WR who's going to need a contract next off-season.

I can definitely believe he wants to make sure everybody knows he's the top dog. Play wise, money wise, everything wise.

Yeah, I was thinking Deebo as well but forgot to include him. In my mind he is a threat to Terry in the stats category.

You'd think not because he has never been the guy to complain about not getting the ball. He hasn't been the pouting diva.

But maybe???

Terry's agent/wife maybe thinks he wont get his mega payday because Deebo will be eating up his stats.

I am fully convinced this is NOT his doing, he was talked into doing it; that demanding a new contract is all the rage and normal to go all in on himself at the teams expense, by ignoring existing contractual obligations.

Unbridled capitalism > everything else here in the USA.

I have zero issue with a player trying to maximise his contract and negotiate the best deal he can for himself. It’s a short career - and the clock is ticking for Terry as he hits 30.

But you have to be smart as well. Terrys maximum value and best deal available is likely what is on the table for him right now. From here on in he starts costing himself money by holding out.

Seeing those videos of Terry either 1) being aloof and not interacting with teammates or 2) being mostly shunned by teammates just makes him look that much worse. If it's the former reason, then Terry is acting like a pouty, petty little bitch. If it's the latter, then Terry's teammates' opinions of his nonsense is absolutely damning.

Speaking of Deebo, at the practice I was at, footage of seen, interviews, etc feels like Jayden and Deebo have gotten really close. I didn't sense Jayden and Terry were as close last year.

Deebo like Terry is on his last year of his contract -- and he comes off happy go lucky including in the practice I was at. Preparing to kill it to get the big contract. He's in great shape and used the preseason to develop chemistry with Jayden.

Deebo also turning 30. The contrast is telling.

As for the agent. Russini said Terry's agent and Terry are super close. As Corry said (ex-agent), its the agent's job to push for the wants of his player. So at a minimum Terry seems to be genuinely thinking this way. But I gather the agent could talk him off his high horse and isn't doing it.

I mean dude, it's literally like a 30 second clip out of a 4-5 hours day on the field for him.

It's amazing how much people are overreacting to things like this lol.
