Michael Deiter is still our backup center. Michael Deiter sucks. The retirement of Hreberg or whatever his name was really hurt their depth. Connerly has not locked down the RT position and we don't know how well Wylie can play LG. We are one injury away from taking on a DL like the Giants with Wylie at LG when we've never seen him play LG, Deiter at center, Allegretti at RG and a rookie at a new positions who may not be ready at RT.

Suddenly I became very concerned about the OL.

Yeah Deiter looked badly outclassed last year, painfully so. Not sure how he has made it so long in this league. But yet they brought him back so.. there he is. I thought Allegretti could also play center and would be first choice at backup center/guard. Was I wrong about that?

I do think Coleman will be fine at left guard and they have just been holding him out to make sure he is ready for the season. Which (to me) indicates they saw enough in camp that they think he doesn’t need as many reps as a newbie to the position because he is already good. Wylie was supposedly a better guard than tackle at KC although I think that mostly right guard.

I thought the plan to start the season would be Tunisil/Coleman/Biadasz/Wylie/Connerly but it looks more like they want to keep Wylie at tackle to cushion Connerly’s transition and be the swing. If true that leaves Deiter as backup center which is a real hole in the roster. Please God let somebody cut a better option before the season.

Anybody have any film from the game last week? I can't imagine Deiter played the whole game did he? Did NOBODY rotate in at C?

It makes zero sense for a 2nd year player who is changing positions to be missing valuable reps and developmental time for 2 weeks unless the injury is significant. He needs to be playing in the preseason. But you are right, any news is 2 weeks old and that makes zero sense to me as this injury and the lack of the ability to develop a young player who is projected to be a starter is pretty big news.
Quinn answered a question about Coleman at his August 14th presser. I was tryin to grab the exact quote, but it's going to take me a minute to do that.

The gist is that he's getting close to getting back to practice, he was doing some individual drills, seems to be getting close. He didn't give any specifics but said he was hopeful they were getting closer to the date he returned to full practice and acknowledged the time, reps and communication matter.
If you go to the presser here: https://www.commanders.com/video/hc-dan-quinn-i-like-the-aggressiveness-that-they-established
the quote starts at about the 5:45 point and ends at the 6:30 point.

** If anybody has an easy way to use AI to transcribe a presser on the team site, let me know. I have been fussing with it, but I haven't been able to get it to work just yet.

We have access to the Commanders Media site where we can get full pdfs of all press conference comments. Here's the snippet on Coleman:

DQ presser...some of the key guys not playing Monday, Wagner, Ertz, Tunsil, McLaurin, Baptiste, Mariotta, Von Miller, Cosmi, Brown, McGee, J. Jones, Coleman. Some due to injury, others just because.

That is a thing that can be looked up. I asked AI, and it said the Pats vs. Bills is the only example of it in NFL History. Which I find unlikely. But I don't have time to probe it deeper.
Apparently so. Nearly as rare is one team beating another by the same score twice in one season. In fact, that didn't happen until after the Patriots-Bills scenario, assuming chatgpt is correct.

How hard is it to find a backup center? I mean there are only 32 starting center jobs in the NFL. But I guess they thought they had filled that void and were not expecting him to retire.

I don't see how they can evaluate and develop Coleman in camp when they were not even hitting until recently. And he is missing all of this.

A good Center is the captain of the oline

Coleman has a year of games in the league and did play some guard in college, He just doesn't have a year in the league at guard, but they know he has the chops, both athletically and from what they have seen so far in camp I assume. You are right though, he does need some time in the preseason in game situations.

I do find the fact they haven't really done anything meaningful at center to be really interesting. I think the plan long term is Allegretti could play center, but he's currently filling in for Cosmi.

Once Cosmi comes back, I think things settle down a bit.

The offensive line needs to be stabilized and in sync otherwise we're going to have problems
Agree, it's a pity 2 of the starters seem to have nagging injuries.

The good news is we entered camp with more depth on the OL than we've had in YEARS. The possibility that Wiley and Allegretti would be backups instead of starters shows how much more depth we have at the position.

That said, with Cosmi still recovering from ACL surgery, Tunsil and Coleman out with whatever they are dealing with, that means the two guys who were depth guys now are starting again. And Coleman might not have any option but to start at RT, even if they wanted to slow role him a bit.

Eh, better to be in this situation than not having depth, but having depth have to play in week one isn't ideal.

That Giants DL is just insane.
And if you get the ball out in 2.3 seconds can be totally neutralized.

That's actually why Bill Walsh invented the WCO, or at least it's predecessor, while the OC in Cincy. He wanted an offence where the ball came out so quickly he could make do with a pretty bad OL in Cincy.

The Air Coryell offense was predicated on "blocking them up and bombs away." The Walsh offense was predicated on "if the balls gone, who needs to block?"

I think Kliff somewhat straddles the line on both offenses.

Yeah, the spread out the defense thing doesn't matter so much when the pass rush is faster.
