Yeah. It's possible Kinsbury's comments were a foreshadowing of the thought that they were done coddling Terry and it was time to get serious or realistic.

I get this stance, as a fan.

However, there’s reputational risk attached to that. The locker room thinks Terry deserves a deal. There’s a balancing act here for AP to do what’s best for the program all around without handicapping the future.
 
Seems like the coaches are trying to say publicly in the most neutral way possible that they are quickly approaching the deadline where Terry needs to be on the field practicing if his intentions are to be ready to go Week 1 (at full capacity and not simply just be present). Doesn't mean that negotiations have to end for the last few weeks of August, but the hold out itself is reaching the cutoff for affecting regular season results.
 
Don't know how much Lewis knows but he was one of the reporters early on saying the asking was $35 mil.

I get ya, chief. From Kliff's recent comments, it sounded like there was some serious frustration with the situation.

Those tweets seem to be from people reading too much into the removal from the PUP list. Keim and that other ESPN guy (the one who used to pay hospital staff for arhletes' private medical info) both say this is unrelated to any progress on contract negotiations.

I think we should be grateful that we have a GM who won't just back up the Brinks truck any time a player makes a ruckus about getting paid more. This was a first major challenge for AP, especially in the beginning. And I think he passed with flying colors, provided a reasonable extension deal is hammered out at some point in the near future. And even if one is not, and Terry ends up playing on the final year of his current deal, I'm okay with that too. Peters has the entire team long term to think about.

Massively illegal, but since AS wasn't hospital staff those rules didn't apply to him. The staff who gave him the information were terminated, and ESPN and its guilty party paid a hefty settlement to Jason Pierre-Paul, so did the hospital where those employees worked.
 
So when does he start getting the 50k fines again?
 
I think at this point, we're all saying about the same thing to each other. There seems to be general agreement on the following points.

  • Terry will turn 30 on September 15th, 2025. This is a fact, and it is undisputed. (Channeling my inner Kevin Bacon from A Few Good Men on that one.)
  • Assuming you believe Spotrac, he's set to earn $15.5 Million Dollars this season. Additionally, he has ~$3M in roster, workout, and other bonuses. That's a total of ~$18.5M this year.
  • The team doesn't have to do anything. He's under control for this year, and they could franchise him next year at ~$28m.
    • In that scenario, Terry would get the $18m this year + $28m next year, all guaranteed, and that's $46 million. So, VOR commentary, I'm not exactly crying a river for his financial situation.
  • Extensions kick in after the current contract is completed, so a 2 year extension would take Terry through the 2027 season, which would be his age 32 season.
  • Asking for top dollar, aka the Metcalf AAV or more, for your age 31, 32 and 33 seasons seems to be an unreasonable ask.
  • All of the comps to Terry are somewhere between 2- and 4 years younger than him, and that matters.
  • It would be ideal if the team and Terry could work out a reasonable deal which would keep him with the team with good compensation for the next few years. But, it has to be win-win or no deal, because the team should not commit future money to an aging player.
  • It is somewhat important that Terry starts to participate in practices and ramp up for the season because it's unlikely he sits out and loses game checks of ~$850k per game.
  • Terry seems to be getting bad advice. And his closeness with his agent is a problem if the agent isn't able to deliver a hard message.

I think that's a pretty comprehensive summary of what folks have been saying.

complaints about overpaying (even though per year average is mostly imaginary) is preferable to trying to speculate if we can get amari cooper out of retirement. gimme dat all day.
 
I picked up that tweet from another board. I was hoping to see it confirmed when I got on this morning, not the case it appears. :(
 
Listened to Keim. I think he had 4 salient points:

1. He said that there is the possibility of a "final offer" coming from the team, but it hasn't happened yet. That would essentially be a "take it and sign the extension of play out your contract" offer. Terry could of course choose option 3 which would be to hold out into the regular season. He said some other GM told him it was "time to throw the hammer down." He didn't indicate if that was a current or former GM. I do wonder about Keim's sources are for outside of the team GMs. I'm sure he knows some of the other GMs, but the best way to get to know them is if they were here. And we haven't had a lot of good ones. I wonder sometimes if he's a little loosey goosey with "talked to a GM" and it's somebody at ESPN who was a former GM. But that's a bit of a useless digression. His point is still valid.
2. He said Terry had said he would not get on the field unless there is progress on a new deal. He said that at the Eastern Motors press conference. There doesn't seem to be progress, so Keim doesn't know what Terry will do if he's presented with a "final offer" deal.
3. Keim said he thinks the team MIGHT be willing to come up to an AAV of $28M, but he doesn't know if that would be enough to to entice McLaurin to sign. He didn't say yes or no, he said he didn't know. To me, this was maybe the most important thing he said.
4. Keim mentioned the injury and said this is something Terry has been dealing with his entire career, and asked "Is it really something that would have kept him out if there was no contract negotiation? I think, you know, you can leave that up to yourself. " He did indicate it was time Terry got onto the field and started participating if he wanted to be ready for the season:

"And um the couple things with that again, he's been at the facility working and you know, but you need to get up to speed.
You need to they play a fast-paced offense. This is the second fastest offense last year in terms of time average time between snaps. Only Dallas was faster.

So this is a you know an offense you need to be in really good shape to play now. You need to be in good shape anyway but especially with this one.
So and they need him on the field. If he wants to have the kind of season to get an even bigger deal then he needs to be on the field."

None of this is earth shattering stuff, but it reinforces a lot of the same things we've been saying.
