Deserving a raise and being offered a raise, but not having the leverage to get a top-3 contract at your position—those are different things entirely and not mutually exclusive ideas.

Call fan goggles whatever you want. Fan bias works too. Team fans want their Sunday filled with hope, and for a large portion of this fanbase Terry is screwing it up. And he should know better. That’s not how business works.
I’m very rational and agree he should get something around $30M. He’s top of tier 2. He disagrees, has leverage, and metrics to back his play for the bottom of tier 1, and he’s playing his hand. I agree he should.
He's playing a bad hand and doesn't realize it.
He has already been paid for what he has done. He still getting paid for another year to do it again. If he sits out, that does him no good now or moving forward. If he balls out for a season, he'll get paid.
The problem almost everyone but Terry sees is he's 30 and wants to be paid based on a WR market set by younger guys with higher upside. Yes, it's realistic to expect a contact he wants will be leaving people asking "Why did they pay him so much" 2-3 years into it. It's a legitimate concern.
Daniels does not need Terry in order to progress.

No im not being obtuse, I’m trying to bring some rationality into this forum for a bunch of folks hell bent on being obtuse regarding a player’s perspective on why he deserves to be paid like a top player at his position.
He is, just not top 3. DK is the comp, like it or not. It’s fair his agent is fighting for that comp. He’s not a diva for fighting for what he believes is his worth.

I think he knows he has a bad hand and is playing it anyway. He’s not sitting out, if he balls out he’s gonna ask for next years numbers.. $35-38M, Commanders will balk again and likely franchise him at 28M.
He knows his age and reports are saying he’s asking that not be part of the equation. Obviously the team cannot do that, but he’s asking anyway.
And no, Jayden doesn’t NEED Terry to progress but it’ll be harder without him; no one wants Jayden facing stacked defenses next year without our #1 wideout.
We’re not a true contender without Terry, a happy team captain Terry. Team gotta Figure it Out!
Just because one team overpays a guy in a major way doesn't automatically mean that other teams must also overpay a guy at the same position if they don't believe he's worth that. DK is what Terry's side wants to use as a comp. Cool story for them. Doesn't mean anything in terms of how everyone else perceives his value.
And why do you keep repeating that Terry has leverage? "Hey, don't make me do something that will hurt me way more than you" is not leverage.
He (and you, or anyone else) can believe his worth is whatever they want. Belief doesn’t dictate worth, the market does. Nobody in the NFL would give him DK’s contract (which in itself was a bad contract that they had to dole out because they traded for him). DK himself isn’t worth that deal and he’s almost 3 years younger. That’s an eternity when you’re talking about prime production years.
Terry is nowhere near anyone else getting paid that amount, and they’re all significantly younger as well as better. He didn’t even crack 1,100 yards this year but feasted on TD’s now that he’s got good QB play. He’s a great player who now has an elite QB. He wants to be paid like he’s one of the best. We say no, he’s stuck under contract until his age 31 season and the franchise tag after that is less than what he’s asking for. Unless he’s ready to retire that’s the definition of lack of leverage.
You’re on the same planet as Terry, thinking his age doesn’t matter. I won’t bother re-posting all of the arguments and studies posted on this board before now, it isn’t debatable just because some minority of HOF players are the exception to the rule. Giving Terry what he’s asking for from a franchise perspective would be malpractice.
He doesn’t deserve $34M, he doesn’t deserve $30M but I’d give it to him on a shorter contract, and he probably realistically deserves $26-29M but won’t accept that. So here we are.
You’re absolutely right that he should try to get all he can. Every player should do that, but not all of them insist that it means getting paid top of market money.
He was overpaid on his last contract (the Snyder desperation tax) and he wants to be again. It’s not fair but he came into the league at 24 years old. He’s not going to have the same career earnings as similar or better players who will accumulate 3-4 more prime years in this league, that’s just reality.
You’re acting like he just had a 110/1500/14 season or something. He had a fair WR2 season but happened to catch a bunch of TD’s from the stud QB who will just throw them elsewhere if he has to. Terry is special to us because he’s ours, but he’s not even a top-10 WR and after this season he won’t be considered a top-15 WR, the position is too young and talented.
Fast forward 14 months. It would be laughing stock type behavior to be paying a 31 year old top-5 money while he’s arguably the 17th best WR in the league or something. Not to mention the increased injury risk. Come on.

You are right, the team doesn’t have to overpay or match the contract, but Terry believes that’s HIS starting point. In that he’s not wrong.
I keep saying he has leverage because folks are saying he has “no leverage.” He has leverage, how much is subjective. But no, everything he says or does isn’t leverage. Asking for a trade isn’t leverage.
Him being perceived as unhappy to management during a superbowl pursuit and causing a season long distraction by forcing him to play on a his current deal, can be seen as leverage.
Having media keep asking coaches and players and our QB about “standing up” for Terry can be seen as leverage.
Not taking care of your own players can be a bad look for other Commanders and the brotherhood, when we’re talking leader and captain Terry, can be seen as leverage.
Starting the football season like this, with fans arguing about contracts and media asking non football questions is leverage.

The market dictated DK’s worth. Pittsburgh paid what they paid. Period. So DK is officially worth what he got. Done deal.
Terry’s age matters. I concur it does. I don’t think he’s worth 34M+, we agree. We agree maybe $30M… maybe.
HE doesn’t think it matters. He thinks he’s a better player than DK. I agree he’s a better receiver than DK.
They were both drafted the same year, so why wouldn’t he consider DK as a viable comp.
So I therefore agree he should fight for the DK contract. The players want him to fight for the DK contract. The NFLPA wants him to fight for the DK contract.
He caught 13 TDs, 2nd amongst wideouts. Can’t ignore that and say anybody would’ve caught 13 TDs, it’s all Jayden. Doesn’t work that way.
So to your point earlier, My opinion on his contract and HIS opinion on his contract are not mutually exclusive.

It seems you and I don’t really disagree on what Terry should get, from the outside as fans. You just weight what Terry himself wants really really really highly in the evaluation of his decision making process for some reason. You realize he’s allowed to advocate for himself however he wants, sure. But at some point it can have a suboptimal effect on the outcome, right? It’s his contract and his choice and yet he can still objectively be wrong and shoot himself in the foot. See: Le’Veon Bell.
Also, quick aside, years in the league doesn’t matter in terms of historical outcomes. Age does. In that regard he is not in the same age cohort as DK, it doesn’t matter what year they were drafted.

Disagree. They are discussing an extension with him because they want to having him on the team for the next several years. They have the desire to bring him back.
They don't have the desire to bring him back at a top 5 WR salary for the next 4 years.
There is a difference.
If Terry doesn't want to take what they are offering, then their fallback option is to do nothing.
Terry can't hold out, can't not play, and can't force a deal. Ergo, he has no actual leverage.
Does the phase of the moon count as leverage? You're just searching desperately for random things to say are "leverage" when they aren't. Leverage means the person can do something and it will hurt the other side of the negotiations more than it would hurt the person doing it (or even benefit them). Terry has absolutely nothing like that. Anything he can "do" would hurt him more than it would hurt the team. Ergo, he has no real leverage.
If he's a distraction and creates problems during the season, they could bench him and everyone will see it, including prospective future teams, which would likely tank his value on the market.
Nobody cares about the media asking questions.
Not taking care of your players is not the same as caving immediately and giving them whatever they want. I'm sure the players see Terry being seemingly very much all about himself, regardless of the effect on the team - and I wouldn't be surprised if it rubs some of them the wrong way, even if they're fine with him trying to make as much as he can.
And nobody cares about random fans arguing or media asking annoying questions (you seem to have essentially used this one twice).

I think what the Commanders could get to is to guarantee 2025 and 2026 at ~$28-$30m. That's somewhere close to DK's guarantee.
The problem is, I don't think they would want to go past the next 2 years with any real guarantees because of Terry's age.
So, the question I asked before, would Terry take a 1 year extension which would essentially give him $60m over the next 2 years, and then re-assess after that? Because that's basically the DK deal. In that scenario, both deals end after the players age 31 season I believe.
There's just no getting around that Terry turns 30 this year. And so projecting his production in his age 32 and 33 seasons is really hard.
Sure he does.
But it's a little bit like asking out the captain of the cheerleading squad who is already dating the captain of the football team. The answer is going to be basically getting laughed at.
But it's a "you do you" type of thing.
Then he's forgetting everything Kenny Rogers taught us: You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run. You never count your money, when you're sitting at the table, there'll be time enough for counting, when the dealings done.
If you've got a bad hand and you double down on the bad hand, you're just going to lose twice the money.
Asking is one thing. Spouting off and demanding a trade is another.
Sure. But if Deebo somewhat returns to the better Deebo, I'd argue Deebo + the rest of our WRs this year = Terry + rest of WRs last year. It's probably close to a wash.
Ideally you have Terry + Deebo + rest of receivers because that's dangerous, and I get that. But the team proved last year with JD5, they don't need elite WRs.
I don't think I agree with that. And I am guessing Peters doesn't either.
I think in the end, Terry's the one who has to figure it out. He's not going to get DK money. He's going to get good money, but not DK money offered. If he doesn't like the offer, his choice is going to be to play on his current ~$20m deal. And then hit FA next year or get franchised, which would give him a guaranteed top-5 contract. That's the worst situation. And candidly, that's not a terrible situation to be in.
Which is one reason I really don't have a lot of sympathy for Terry. I did when he was up for his last deal. But this time? Not so much.

I would be very surprised if he gets traded. Team holds the leverage. He plays under contract or he doesn't play at all this year and doesn't get paid. His primary and unbelievable error is overvaluing where his contract should be. He is saying since he's in great shape age should not matter. That's not going to work. I don't like him missing all these reps at all. Our offense is going to be ball with or without Terry.

Me neither, millionaire vs billionaire is the least of my worries. Terry makes an awesome living, more power to him to make more, fight like hell. I do. Adam Peters is running the Commanders ship, fight like hell to right it.
Hopefully Terry is happy and plays, if not, we got no shot this year at a Lombardi. But I’m not gonna cry about it and start name calling. That irks me, thus the hill…

No shot huh without Terry? We have JD. We have a shot without Terry. We dramatically upgraded our oline and rush defense. Many here are either forgetting how good Deebo is and what he can do or weren't aware in the first place. He's a stud and deadly for yac. We have other receivers who can step up. The chances of the Lombardi reduce without Terry but not shot I disagree with.

Yeah - I agree. We also may get a boost from Sinnott and McCaffrey if they indeed do progress in season 2, and Jaylin Lane looks like a great pickup. Another big factor that seldom gets talked about - Austin Ekeler is still a huge weapon. With the drafting (and how he has apparently looked in practices so far) of Jacory Croskey-Merritt), they can use Ekeler more as a 3rd down/relief back. He is still one of the best pass-catching backs in the NFL if we can keep him on the field.
It's impossible to argue that we wouldn't miss McLaurin, he's been our most productive offensive player for years. But I don't think the team's success in 2025 necessarily hinges on whether he's on the field or not.
