I am by no means trying to diminish Terry’s value given all that has transpired with the contract drama over the last few weeks. However, I will say that one of the things that i always thought separates some of the more crème de la crème receivers from McLaurin was their ability to stay involved in ball games for longer stretches compared to him. Repeatedly over the years, it felt like McLaurin seemed invisible for long stretches in games, where he would go without catches or sometimes even a large share of targets for multiple quarters at a time. That doesn’t feel like it’s the case for some other big time wideouts. Now granted, this was likely attributed to the fact that we had no weapons in previous years around Terry, making it easier for the opposition for eliminate him. However, this happened last year as well with Daniel’s behind center. I dug through some numbers quickly and there were 7 contests in 2024 where McLaurin amassed fewer than 59 yards in a game. Why 59 as a target? Well, over a 17 game NFL season, a wideout has to average 58.8 yards per game to hit the 1000 receiving yard mark.
The games were as follows:
Tampa Bay: 2 receptions, 17 yards.
New York: 6 receptions, 22 yards.
Arizona: 7 receptions, 52 yards.
Baltimore: 6 receptions, 53 yards.
New York: 2 receptions, 19 yards.
Philly: 1 reception, 10 yards.
Atlanta: 1 reception, 5 yards.
For what it's worth, the team had a 4-3 record in those games and still scored 27 or more points in three of those contests. Granted, while some of those receiving numbers were low, to be fair, it should be noted that in a few of those games, he still had impact scoring plays, amassing 2 TDs vs. the Ravens, 2 TDs in the second Giants game, and one TD in the Cardinals game. However, as we all know the 13 total TDs last year were likely the outlier for his career, and definitely not the norm.
For sake of comparison, I was curious how other top wideouts faired in this regard last year. Here is what I found:
Jefferson: 3 weeks where his yardage fell below the 58.8 yards per game mark.
Lamb: 3 weeks…
Chase: 4 weeks…
Nabers: 3 weeks…
AJ Brown: 3 weeks…
My gut feeling that McLaurin sometimes plays Houdini with in game disappearing acts maybe did hold some water. Just some food for thought and maybe just another piece of evidence as to why this is not a top dollar player.
