And with Peters and Quinn pushing the all for one and one for all approach with the team, could they just - if you don't wish to be here, we don't want you. That's a tough situation for team leader and captain

Yeah part of my frustration with Terry is even his rhetoric as the contract is all about him. Again, plenty of others do the same. But there are some leader type players who talk about wanting to be there (at whatever team they play for) and want to work out something that benefits all parites, etc. Wanting to be part of something special, etc.

To me among all of the things Terry is pushing -- the narrative about its not about the money to him but its about what the money signifies what he means to them. I gather he thinks that's a nice way to say to the fans its not about him wanting to get a big pay day -- but the big pay day is on the front office to show him how much they love him. That IMO is a big time ego centric point.

And look I've never heard Terry talk about himself in third person untl this negotiation.

You’re describing how fans feel, not how players and coaches think. There is a reason why players and teammates and coaches typically won’t comment on these kinds of things and are generally supportive of the player. There is a brotherhood and mutual understanding amongst players that ‘hey, I’m going to try and get everything I can while I can and anything I do to that end is okay’. Players and coaches aren’t going to lose trust in a guy based on his tactics to get more $$.

The real reason you don’t do this is because you have no leverage and all you do it motivate the Front Office to play even harder ball than they have to date. You also alienate fans but in the end that probably doesn’t mean much. The ‘nuclear option’ here would be refusing to take the field, but again, that would hurt noone but McLaurin.

TM is currently doing what my mother lectured me not to do as a kid - he’s biting his nose off to spite his face.

Well... yeah another team MIGHT be willing to pay him over market value because they are both desperate and dumbass (hello Vinny!) but it seems almost inconceivable another team will offer enough to the Commanders to make a trade worthwhile. His trade value is probably mid-round at this point and he is worth more than that to us. But what is our best play at this point?

Just say no - play or sit without pay and you will be worse off next year, or

Test the market for yourself and get real. If you really can find another team willing to give up a say, second round pick then we might listen. Don't think so. He is more likely to then come back with more realistic demands.

I would just say no. This negotiation is not in a universe by itself and sends a message to all players, here and in the future that this front office can be fair but can't be bullied. Terry is the best WR receiver we have and a clear #1 but that doesn't make him indispensable. The WR group (sans Terry) as a whole is looking a lot better this year and there are multiple examples of teams that had an OK but not outstanding WR group paired with a star QB that brought home the trophy.
 
(I realize that this is a very simplistic thought so I apologize in advance) but what is occurring is nothing more than a disagreement over the players perceived value.

A very wise mentor in my past explained to me in no uncertain terms that your value is what it’s perceived to be by others, not what you perceive it to be.

Terry perceives his value one way, the team clearly perceives it another way. Maybe Terry will find another team that agrees with him, though I doubt it. Hoping to draw an inside straight is not impossible but it is both a dangerous tactic and an unlikely occurrence.

For me like I said, it diminshes being a good character when you suggest you should be paid in part for being a good character. I think peope should be good dudes because they want to be a good dudes -- there shouldn't be IMO any price tag attached to it.

For me, I am now Terry more in the diva category than not. Not a flow blown diva. He's no TO. But if I hear again, hey he's one of the low maintenance WRs -- not in my book, not anymore. There are plenty of WRs who don't bring drama in any context whether its on the field or off the field.

Terry at a minimum is very high strung off the field when it comes to negotiations. And not just because he's a hard negotiator. But its the hold outs. The comments. And in this case even a trade request.
 
I think we could get a 2nd for him but that team would then have the same dilemma we do - having to pay a big contract to a WR entering the downside of his career. We are also trying to get to and win a Super Bowl - right now and trading away your #1 receiver doesn’t help you get there in the short term.

The team has no reason to trade him and they won’t. He has no choice but to report and play out his contract. Both sides know that which makes the tactics by TM’s camp pretty pointless and silly.
 
I think he’s high-strung and an emotional guy. On the field those are qualities that are probably helpful.

The gist of impass is that Terry thinks he should be made an exception to the rule for how his career will unfold in his 30s. This FO doesn't see it that way.

Junkies just now, one of them said they talked to someone who knows Terry about 6 weeks ago and was told Terry is really pissed and was talking about other teams he'd like to play for.

Digesting all of them in recent weeks. Feels like Terry is pissed that this team doesn't believe in him enough to take his word that he will be at 32, 33, etc the same player he is now. And the idea that WRs should be paid less in their 30s is nonsense. And even if they don't per se see it this way -- they should pay what he's asking for because all he's done for this team.

I hope both sides know that. Not as sure now.
 
I know most don’t see it happening, but I think McLaurin is stubborn enough to actually refuse to play another down for Peters and try to force Washington into the ‘something is better than nothing’ trade scenario.

It would be a dumb and reckless thing to do, but I would not rule out him doing it because he’s unable to accept the valuation the team has placed on him.

I believe this, given what we saw out of one of his buddies on Twitter last night.

I agree with you. I’ve already moved on from Terry in my own mind.

I never subscribe to the Bruce Allen way of slandering your own player, but I’d like to see the team offer $28M per, publicize it, and if he doesn’t take it - make him sit or play under his current contract.

Ultimately, just nip this in the bud and don’t let him cloud the offseason any longer.
 
You know, respect might look like paying him like the team did their best receiver of all time. Tear up the current offer and offer Terry McLaurin Art Monk money.

Yeah, this is where I am. We’ve seen this act from players before. The trade request is usually one of the last steps in negotiations. Two years ago, Lamar Jackson requested a trade from the Ravens during contract negotiations. This is what agents do when they make this stuff public. They want fan and media pressure on the team. I definitely believe this was made public by the agent because when has this front office ever leaked anything? When has any news come from this front office until something actually happened?

My opinion is that until something actually happens, there is nothing to get worked up about. Do I wish this didn’t happen at training camp? Sure. But other than that, this seems to happen every year with a handful of players across the league.

Yeah just relistened to that Keim segment.

He guessed that the team would go to 28 million a year but wasn't sure if Terry would take it.

He also referenced the Terry camp seeing a Terry tax in this mix of this as to getting paid something for all he went through under the Synder regime. I get it, but that feels silly to me. And Keim answered that question by saying this FO is concerned about what he can do, not what he's been through.

In a trade (which he doesn't think happens) he's not sure they'd even get a third rounder considering the money component of all of this.
