The All Things Terry Thread

This whole conversation is ridiculous. Terry is under contract this year (Age 30) and can be franchised next year (Age 31), which sets his CEILING that he can ask for. Which then begs the question of how much is he worth in his age 32-34 season...
I've looked at all the WR's over the last 25 years, and there is a CLEAR drop at ~32.
Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, TO, Keenan Allen, Moss, Ocho, Torry Holt, Hopkins, Roddy White, Antonio Brown, Hopkins, Diggs, Jordy Nelson, Brandon Marshall, Santana Moss, etc. All had some big years 28-31 and then fell off so bad they were not even a starting WR, and usually cut.

The ONLY examples of guys in their mid 30's happened over 20 years ago (Rod Smith, Reggie Wayne/Marvin Harrison, Jimmy Smith, and Chris Carter)

AJ Brown scares me, Terry McLaurin does not. I’m not so sure that DCs need to game plan to take Terry away. They may, I’m just not so sure of it.

It’s funny but I think Terry actually benefits from being the 2nd tier guy that he is because if he was a bit better he’d get a ton more defensive attention. As it stands he’s clearly very very good and he can make you pay, but you don’t have to double him every snap because he’s not THAT good, and your quality outside CB is going to be able to stick with him a good percentage of the time. But for us, that means he’s going to make plays downfield against normal coverage or win contested balls a good percentage of the time. But it’s not like with AJB where if you don’t treat him as a major threat, even a passer like Hurts is going to keep going back to that well and make you pay over and over. We’ve seen it.

What changed with Terry’s performance is that Daniels is good enough to make defenses pay when Terry wins, and give him higher percentage throws that he can win on.

Devil's Advocate here for Terry (For the record I am definitely not endorsing the amount Shefter is stating)

  • The first two games of this season Terry had negligible yardage as he and Jayden were A) not on the same page and B) Kliff wasn't quite sure how to use him with how he'd be guarded in the NFL. It's not unreasonable to think his production could easily be 100 yards higher.
  • Kliff (to make things easier for the QB reading a defense) had Terry line up as the left wideout almost all the time. That's a scheme that makes it harder for a WR to produce, and a fair amount of his big plays were when Kliff wanted a kill shot and lined him up on the right side (Bengals clutch late TD as an example). It's not unreasonable to think Kliff's usage of Terry hurt his yardage production too.
I think Terry deserves far more than Sutton's 23 a year. I do not think Sutton is a reasonable comp to Terry. Sutton's 2024 season is comparable to Terry's, but the rest of his are not. The guy, with poor QB play (like Terry) was topping out at 750-850 yards a year. Whereas Terry was 1000-1100. Terry deserves a nice bump over Sutton, period.

It does however help the team's leverage. I think I stand by my initial thought that Terry should get either 26-28mil with high guarantees or 30-31mil with low guarantees.

I do want this resolved quickly. There is a statistic I saw a year or so ago, that players with long contract disputes that get into pre-season often become injury prone during the ensuing season as they aren't able to train properly during that contract dispute. It's usually pulled hamstrings for WR's or other soft tissue injuries that are the culprit.

Thank you Sutton and Denver for introducing some reason and reality to the Baker-McLaurin camp. Hopefully they won't continue to be stupid.

If the reports about ‘significantly more’ than Metcalf are true, it’s turning my opinion a bit on the future. The right price has always been an emphasis, but this is getting out of hand if he’s looking at Chase / Jefferson money.

Folks might have thought I was either joking or being idiotic, but if McLaurin's camp keeps up the 'I'm a top 5 receiver' BS then the team should look to trade him - give his agent the chance to shop his client for a new contract with another team. I think that might level set expectations.

If he can garner appropriate compensation in a proposed deal and someone is willing to meet his price, then we use those pick/picks to acquire a WR to come in and join our group for 2025 and beyond.

The worst thing is paralysis where the player and the team get to the point where initial positive vibes and compliments turn into mutual recriminations and a big distraction.

While I think Terry on the team in the opener is better for Jayden than having to work a new WR in, McLaurin holding out or staying on PUP would be a major distraction that then turns into a negative for the club overall.

Terry is a bit spoiled. He signed a contract in 2022 for 3 years that paid him a top 5 salary despite generally not being considered a top 5 player at the position. He received 75% guaranteed money in the deal and $28M bonus.

So, this is how the baby shark started eating, he started eating well. Now he wants to do so again in much the same position at 30 instead of 27, a good player with good numbers but not someone you put in your top performers at position category.

Why trade him for a 3rd and 4th, when you can just force him to play out his contract and then franchise him? I think that’s the move, unless Terry comes to his senses.

What I hope happens, is that Terry fires his agent at the end of this. His agent isn’t doing himself any favors.

Yeah I’m not sacrificing our playoff future the next two years for a couple mid round picks (or even a late 2nd). Terry might be a little cranky but he’ll cash those checks all the same. We have the leverage and for once we’re good enough to use it.

I assume Terry’s agent gassed him up about an extension that exceeds DK, and this is likely more emotional than it is financial at this point.

At the end of the day, the team has the leverage. Terry is under contract and the FT for next season at $29M is on the table. I’m not sure why his agent feels entitled to a DK+ deal.
