The 2025 Draft Thread

The talk about Ron and company’s drafting just made me realize something… in back to back years we drafted undersized corners early - Forbes in the 1st and Sainristil in the 2nd. Forbes is gone in a year, Sainristil gets put on the outside (and among other highlights, notches 2 Ints in the divisional round). That’s a heck of a data point to showcase the difference in draft success between regimes.

Sainristil is not really that undersized for a slot corner, which he was drafted to be. Forbes at 160 pounds had historically low weight for an outside CB in the modern era

Digesting these 2nd- early 3rd round running backs some more.

Treveyon Henderson: I am not with McShay on the thought that Henderson goes late first. I think most of the other mock draft types are proven right that he goes to the 2nd. I love Henderson but he's not a perfect prospect. Among all these Rbs, he was the worst or close to the worst when it came to dealing with stacked boxes. I saw on Sharp's web site, he was the worst when it came to success after getting hit at or behind the line of scrimmage. About 50% of the time that happened he didn't get a single yard. He feasted off of light boxes. And while i am good with that it adds to the profile that he's not a featured RB type. He's the dude Ohio State liked to use more often in passing downs. Judkins was the opposite. He was one of the better against stacked boxes. Moreover, he played a fair amount against stacked boxes. I think he goes somewhere early to mid 2nd.

Skattebo: Doubling down on him. I think he's tailored made if this offense wants to become what SF once was which is a bruising one where it hurts to play them. Remember the season when no team won the next week after playing SF? SF came into a hot Philly and ripped the Eagles to shreds? Shattebo adds to that. And yes running violent does translate to the next level. And it goes below the radar somehow that the dude was an incredible weapon in the passing game. Best passing game stats in this group.

Kaleb Johnson: He's an enigma but I lean positive. Faced stacked boxes yet succeeded anyway. He was he best in the class against light boxes the rare times he got them, even better than Henderson. Big dude yet seems to favor running on the periphery and his team goes heavy outside zone. Didn't run fast yet he looks fast when watching him and breaks some big runs. Isn't a physical between the tackles kind of guy and like Henderson is poor at breaking tackles when hit on the line of scrimmage. Yet he has one of the biggest break tackle rates in this group, because he's hard to take down in open field. Brain Robinson if Robinson can turn the corner and turn a 2 yard run into a 20 yard run?

He seems like a scheme dependent guy. Would likely kill it in SF. Either a superstar or just a guy. Tough call for me. But he looks the part.

Sampson: He feels very boom-bust the more I digest. He's a bit of an enigma like Kaleb where I can see it going either way. The bad is the dude fumbles, has small hands, has one of the highest drop rates in the passing game. For a dude wiith his speed he was just ordinary at best at breaking big runs, 15 plus. Tennessee's blocking for him was really good. He had the lighted boxes in this class. Got hit the least at the line of scrimmage. But, he's fast, and looks fast when running. Good wiggle to go along with the speed. And like Henderson he can run well inside which fits this scheme.

Damien Martinez: he's like a walking double as running back. He's not an electric runner. But he's really good. Very consistent. if you want to move the chains consistently he's the guy. He rarely gets stopped. He's what I gather our coaching staff would love Brian Robinson to be albiet he isn't that guy. He can deal with stacked boxes. He's explosive enough to take advantage of liight boxes.

Judkins: like Martinez can succeed against heavy boxes. Like Martinez he gets yards consistently no matter the context. He's a good pass protector when I watched him -- I know some disagree with that. I also think he has underrated hands. His athleticism for his size was great. It's toss up for me if I was deciding between him and Martinez as to a power type back.

Skattebo....thanks to your takes, has grown on me quite a bit. Thinking he definitely goes in the 3rd....going to suck if we miss out due to lack of a 3rd this year (so far), not just him but looks like a lot of value to be had in the 3rd this year.

Yeah I'd add Sainristil seems well built for his size. 180 plus pounds for 5 '9.

lol, maybe I missed it but don't recall hearing a mea culpa on air from Fred Smoot who was so giddy about the Forbes pick it was wild. you'd think we drafted Champ Bailey and Darrell Green rolled up in one, when they took him. I gather with him it was a combination of Forbes went to his same school and Smoot would go on and on about him before the draft. Part of me wondered if Smoot's enthusiam was part of the soup to sell Forbes to Ron.

Agree about the value in the 3rd. Don’t think I agree about moving down from 29 if the right edge is there but I think it is a no brainer to try to move down in the 2nd

The fun part for me is I am not married to any of these Rbs. My hope though is they take one of the RBs I mentioned.

I wouldn't hate it if they go a tier down. But I don't love them the same way. A tier down for me would be Harvey or Giddens. I'd be enthused about them.

I'd be jazzed to an extent for the speed backs: Tuten, Blue. i got to watch some more M. Williams.

Tier below that: Jordan James, D. Neal, Woody Marks, J. Hunter. I'd talk myself into it probably.

I don’t think so. I think we have Hurney to blame. There was reporting that there was a shouting match in the war room when they took Forbes so there was definitely a split in the building around him.

Maybe its just me but I always highly value the 3rd round. I feel a normal team (which was not the Redskins over the Danny era) should hit on the 1sts being starters but the 2nd -5th round being where the core of your team is built. 3 or 4 successful years in a row in these rounds and now you have something.

What a great analyst and breakdown of the teams activities through the process. I am still hoping they are able to get a good trade back from 29 but I wont hold my breath that they will receive a decent offers. Teams will throw low-ball offers knowing AP will want a trade back. I figure he will bite on one in the 2nd though

What's interesting to me is thus far there are some positions they are mostly or completely ignoring: DT, S, LB.

Feels like: DE, CB, WR, RB, O line.

Don’t know why I had convinced myself he was 5’8. Either way though, “very poor” RAS in size and weight and then he played well on the outside, so not an apples to apples comparison, but still…

I hear you on this, but yeah, it all depends on their tiering. If players at other positions in the same tier will still be available after a trade back, I’m not sure it makes sense to force the DE pick (and miss out on the chance to gain a draft pick to nab another guy they like).

I'd have to think LB Jhaad Campbell is on their radar. To me, he's easily in the top 10-20 range of players and if he's still there at #29 that'd be a steal in my book and a mistake to overlook him too.

Good point. I really expecting them to be eyeing FS along with CB. Since that isn't the case, I'm expecting a CB not afraid to hit and for goodness sake, can tackle too! Plus of course they love D players that can force or create turnovers. At DT I still think if Jackson is in the game at 29 or early in the 2nd via trade back. But he can be considered Edge too. It still feels like there is a void at LB

I don't blame Smoot. Like I said in the soup, not a key driver. Smoot was so over the top about Forbes, you'd think he was the best player in the draft let alone best corner. And he was working for the team at the time doing the team PR broadcast stuff, etc. So if there was some back and forth clearly on that pick. I don't think its wild for Smoot to chime in before the draft to Rivera, feels like Smoot's style. Where he goes look Ron, I came from that same school, the people I know there rave about this kid, or something like that. In all my years following the draft, I can't really recall anyone as enthusiastic for a player the way Smoot was for Forbes. When they drafted Forbes, you'd think Smoot just hit the lottery, he was pure joy.

But I agree with your overall point that Hurney was a disaster. As far as who is to blame for what, not sure. I recall one beat guy (forgetting whom) mentioned that Del Rio didn't care for Kyle Hamilton. And then another one said that they heard Del Rio didn't care for Jamin Davis yet they drafted him anyway. In the war room, at least the part they showed, Del Rio seemed happy with the Forbes pick.

Yeah Jackson to me is edge not DT. He can play DT on passing downs but he IMO is an edge.

For me, it comes down to a few guys. If Scourton, Ezeiraku or Williams is there at 29, you go ahead and take that guy. (I am assuming Pearce and Green will be off their boards due to character issues)

I think there is a real dropoff from the guys I mentioned to Landon Jackson, JTT, Jack Sawyer, Oladejo, etc.

As we learned years ago in the trade down that cost us JJ Watt for Kerrigan, EDGE is not a position you skimp on if a guy with real Pro Bowl upside is there

I feel similar. I believe there are a few different reasons for that.

We don't know for certain what direction DQ and company wants to go.

That especially takes hold due to what we already have on the roster. Will Ekeler play and what's the chance of him staying healthy? Slim probably

Do they wish to move in the opposite direction, speed heavy. Do they wish to go with another or better power back.

And there are the prospects. Most are not full blown all around backs and they all have chinks in their armor.

I, most of us prefer a home run hitter in this draft both in the run and pass game that's decent in blitz pickup with little injury or fumbling history. Well....eh

I find a number of the bigger RB's better options this year. Henderson, Kaleb, Skattebo, Neal, Martinez.

Was playing around with a draft simulator, and after trading back, Schwesinger was sitting there. Which got me thinking, how much benefit would it be to have a guy learning from Wagner to then take over next year, and how effectively could Whitt use 3 LBs (I know he did at times last year)?

Agree with the sentiment, but that’s if they’re set on DE (particularly one of those). It’s obviously our biggest need, so as I said, I’m generally with you. If, however, they know they can get someone in that same tier, say, Azareye’h Thomas/JaydenHiggins/whoever and can add picks, I can see why they’d go that route instead… even if it means a lesser (ranked) DE (or 2) later in the draft.

Correct me if I'm wrong SIP but I thought we'd met with several safeties. Agree about the other positions though.

Bigger as to size? if so Henderson isn't one of those bigger ones at 202 pounds.

At least as to the combine-pro days, only one i see is Billy Bowman. Most project to the 4th or later. Not much action at safety.

Actually I did mean bigger as a size and was planning a caveat with the Ohio State duo (Henderson size wise). However, I was interrupted like 5 times while trying to type it out . I do like Henderson as my #1 if they were taking a RB with their to pick
