The 2025 Draft Thread

I'm hoping Egbuka's label as "professional #2" will drop him to us, bc I think he's being downplayed just like Terry was, and in fairness to those sentiments he isn't Chase or Jefferson, but you don't need to be Chase or Jefferson to be a top 10-15 solid #1 WR in the NFL.

But Burden falling may doom that. Golden's rise gave me some hope but I find it hard to believe there won't be at least 3 WRs off the board before 29.

Re: RBs, I appreciate all the conversation, but I kinda wanna reverse-Moneyball the position.

We keep trying to recreate Clinton Portis in the aggregate, and we just haven't done it. But we can draft Giamb-I mean a new Clinton Portis.

Now, I don't know that we have the resources for it tho, unless we're taking Hampton at 29, and I don't know if the guys like Henderson or Judkins will still be there at 61 (I'll settle for a truly Gibbs-like guy), but I think philosophically that's where I kinda wanna move towards.

We've spent a 2nd rounder twice on RBs this century, on Guice, who was plagued with injuries, and then allll the way back with Betts who was a solid #2 behind Portis and had one magical year while Portis was injured. No 1sts spent this century. We've periodically gotten good RB play from guys like AlMo, Gibson, and the like, but also, we've had two 1000 yard rushers post 2014, and that was sub-1100 yard years from Adrian Peterson and Antonio Gibson. Gotta go alllllll the way back to 2013 to find a 1200+ yard rusher, with AlMo.

I know it's very possible to get good RBs later, but the stats are not friendly on it.

56 unique players have had 1000+ rushing seasons since 2015
15 were 1st rounders
12 were 2nd rounders
7 were 3rd, 8 were 4th, 5 were 5th, 1 6th, 1 7th, and 7 UDFA

And of the 40 total 1200+ yard seasons from 2015 to 2024, 33/40 were 1st or 2nd rounders.

If you look at the total body of work of those 56 unique players (so including those players' pre-2015 seasons too), they totaled:

54 1200+ yard seasons, of which 24 were 1st rounders, 19 2nd rounders, 7 3rd rounders (3 of which were Frank Gore by himself), 0 4th rounders, 3 5th rounders, 0 6th rounders, 1 7th rounder, and 0 from UDFAs.

80 additional 1000+ yards seasons, of which 20 were from 1st rounders, 18 2nd, 12 3rd (6 from Frank Gore), 12 4th, 7 5th, 1 6th, 1 7th, 9 UDFA.

Which is to say, of the 56 unique players who managed 1000+ yard seasons in the last decade:
48% were from 1st two rounds;
and those 48% of players account for 79% of total 1200+ yard seasons those 56 players put up; and
those 48% of players account for 47.5% of 1000-1199 yard seasons those 56 players played.
They account for a combined 81/134 1000+ yard seasons those 56 players put up.

And I mention Frank Gore bc he's a huge outlier. 3 1200+ yard seasons in his career, and 6 additional 1000+ yard seasons. If you remove Frank Gore from the equation, of the 125 1000+ yard seasons those 55 players put up, 3rd round to UDFA accounts for only 8 total unique 1200 yard seasons and 36 total unique 1000-1199 seasons. That is, every player after the 2nd who managed to put up 1000+ yards accounted for a combined 44/125 1000+ yard seasons while 1st and 2nd rounders accounted for 81/125 1000+ yard seasons.

OBVIOUSLY player quality matters.

BUT picking an RB after the 2nd feels like playing roulette or throwing darts, while picking one 1st or 2nd round is more akin to blackjack. You at least have okay odds to beat the house.

Speaking of DTs - What's the deal with Tyleiks knee injury from yesterday?

Getting the vibe, that we should examine, S. Stewart, M. Williams, J. Campbell, W. Johnson. Listening to different podcasts, seeing recent mocks, etc. Some think they can be in play in the late first. Heck Kiper on his last podcast said he's hearing J. Campbell likely drops to the 2nd.

I think in a deep draft we could trade down and get two pass rushers who can come in and contribute in Year 1.

Howie Roseman did that last year at the cornerback position and did quite well getting starters to solidify a weakness from 2023.

This guy seems to be loaded ... with potential. (sigh)

Ya just never know. Probably take a year or two (ala Sweat).

"Looking at the tape, Stewart's athletic profile now invites Myles Garrett comparisons based purely on testing numbers, but that's where the similarities largely end. While Garrett entered the draft with refined technique and dominant production (31 sacks in three seasons at Texas A&M), Stewart remains somewhat raw with underdeveloped hand usage and just 4.5 career sacks. The physical tools might test similarly, but Garrett was a polished product while Stewart is still very much a projection based more on traits than tape. The flashes are there but inconsistent, and teams must decide if they're willing to gamble a top-10 pick on athletic upside over proven production - a bet that has burned many NFL front offices before. After his combine performance, the Myles Garrett athletic comparisons will inevitably follow, but teams should proceed with caution. Stewart has launched himself into top-10 consideration based on testing alone, but his tape shows a player who badly needs technical refinement and consistency. The potential is tantalizing yet uncertain - he could develop into a defensive cornerstone or become the latest cautionary tale of prioritizing combine numbers over college production."

Yeah both him and M. Willliams are loaded with potential

The way this draft is turning out to be in terms on mocks by some of these so called experts, I feel like we have always wondered how some of these highly ranked players end up with these good teams, for example, Loveland, Campbell, Egbuka, etc. It feels surreal to say that we could be one of these teams this year with so much uncertainty from late first round onwards where consensus is all over the place.

Also, just by reading who we have been interviewing during the draft process, I am of the opinion there is a high chance that we trade down and accumulate more picks in the 3-5 Rd range and we do have a smart GM to guide this team through the process.

Video didn't look like high 4.4, more like low 4.6s but hey, low 4.6s still good and if he's run in the 4.5s at times while scouts are measuring that's pretty solid too. Takes a lot of my hesitancy away re: him at 61. I'll firmly add him into that top grouping of Jeanty/Hampton/Henderson/Judkins/Johnson.

So, now that the news is out there others will think of making an early move for the player? 🙃

Which to me means this is all misdirection or SWAG on part of folks who will not to be in War Room.

The fact we havent signed anyone really yet to replace Fowler as our LEO role tells me we plan on selecting one early with our first or second pick.

Ideally I hope a stud falls to us at 1.29

Jalon Walker
Mike Green
Donovan Ezeiraku
James Pearce
Jihaad Campbell
Shemart Stewart

Assuming off-field concerns are checked out, I would gladly take any of the above at that spot.

Otherwise, I would trade back and look at Oladejo or Kennard in the 2nd.

I would be upset if we selected at RB in Round 1 with how deep the class is

It's

I think the difference was that Terry wasn't really featured at Ohio State. For whatever reason, he wasn't played like one of their top guys. He was one of those few picks where we bet on potential and it worked out. Remember, when we got him our hopes would be that he would be a good special teamer.

Egbuka has been a workhorse for Ohio State. When I watch one of their games, he seems like the guy who is always there when they need the play. Maybe he's not a highlight real guy, but he has been a huge factor in their success.
