I liked the draft last year and FA and I like a lot of what we did this year, but it's reactionary. I'm still "I believe in AP" and all, but I'm disappointed so far over all. We're building like a team who wants to make the playoffs. Not win superbowls (plural)
I totally get where you are coming from. The thing is, I think it’s unlikely that we even make the NFC Championship game again without majorly upgrading the roster this season.
I feel like what’s happening this year is a necessary compromise, partially because JD5 was so much better, so much faster, than you could reasonable expect, and partially because Ron left the cupboard so bare. Honestly, I’d still like to see us trade for Hendrickson.
Assuming Lattimore returns roughly to form; and he’s not even 29 yet, a defense with Hendrickson, Payne, Newton, Lattimore, Luvu, Wagner, and Sainristil should be a top 10 unit.
And on offense, assuming we upgrade at RB, we should be able to more consistently perform on a down to down basis, without needing JD5 heroics every game.
Tunsil is a top 3 pass blocking LT, has been super healthy, and doesn’t turn 31 until august. He should be really good for at least 3 years. Hendrickson isn’t going to be 31 until December and has also been super healthy.
Deebo could be a 1 year rental, but only cost a 5th. Latinos was a little more expensive, but if we get a couple years of 90% of he New Orleans Lattimore, it will have been worth it.
This looks like we are loading up to try to be Super Bowl contenders immediately, with stars that will be at or near their peaks until we have to extend Jayden.
I fully expect for us to return to leaning much more heavily on the draft starting next year.
